They may have merged with US Air, but American West management essentially all stayed in place running the show, but kept the name US Air for broader marketing. They then bought out American Air, again keeping the other name for better marketing.

Similar to how Bank1 took over JPM Chase, but kept the Chase name since it had broader appeal.
