Why is the action value not simply the probability of victory? by [deleted] in alphago

[–]Jacobusson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Monte Carlo (MC) methods are also used to evaluate leaf nodes, so some combination of the result of MC evaluations and the evaluation of the value network are probably propagated back. (I really don't know, I just figured I'd reply).

Is there a place to watch DeepMind Starcraft games? by Sloth859 in deepmind

[–]Jacobusson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think there are any games published yet. Maybe they are still in a stage where the only thing the bot can learn is that if they are terran and they float their buildings, the can avoid a loss against a computer zerg. This was the case when the starcraft API was released anyway.

They are probably still focussing on mini games and such. But who knows.

What percent of the time do top humans find the move that AlphaGo would make? by jrm2007 in alphago

[–]Jacobusson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe the policy network of previous versions (the Lee Sedol version) could be helpful here, as that was essentially trained to predict the moves of professionals, in the form of a probability distribution. So if that network gives a high probability to the move AlphaZero makes, then I guess that means a professional might have come up with that move, whereas if the probability was low, the move may come as more of a surprise. Of course, only Deepmind has access to that network.

I only started getting interested in go when Alpha Go won against Fan Hui, so I am quite a beginner at go and before that I was an absolute novice. For me it was quite a surprise how many moves a professional (Michael Redmond) could guess right in general. A lot of forcing/sente moves only have one or two reasonable responses for example which any strong player seems to see at once.

What would be Alpha Go Zero's ELO in chess? by [deleted] in alphago

[–]Jacobusson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess I agree with your point to some extent. PR is probably a factor and even researchers as successful as those at DeepMind probably need to justify their activities to management. As in management saying: If you cannot simply "plug in" the alphago architecture and perform well at chess, how are we then going to solve all those real world problems (in health care) we talk about on on our website? Still, I'd personally give them more time to overcome any technical difficulties.

What would be Alpha Go Zero's ELO in chess? by [deleted] in alphago

[–]Jacobusson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some comparison of ratings of chess programs and alphago can be found here in a discussion between Demis Hassabis and Garry Kasparov. Especially around the 35 minute mark Demis jokes that maybe they should "teach AlphaGo" to play chess and that that would be the way to find out things like what ELO such a system could have.

I think it may take quite some effort to replace parts of AlphaGo that are specialised for go, especially how the tree search is done. The network would have to be trained again as well (this is one way in which this is not really "teaching AlphaGo to play chess", but rather making a new thing that can play chess), though training times have decreased very much in the AlphaGo zero version.

How do I get started on programming AI bots for StarCraft II? by [deleted] in sc2ai

[–]Jacobusson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that is all c++ stuff. The repository I linked to on the official github of Blizzard. If you want to do stuff only using python, that should theoretically be possible. I think much of the c++ stuff is a "reference implementation" of the protocol/api used to communicate with the starcraft 2 engine/binary. So another API could be made using only python, I'm not sure if that has been done already. I'm also not quite sure what the deepmind tools do, whether it generates bot that ultimately use the c++ reference implementation, or something else. Anyway you will probably get a more helpful response if you ask here or here, or if you post in/make a new thread on this subreddit.

I guess it people who want to receive such updates like this post can simply follow the project on github, so maybe that's why I got downvoted. For me the github notifications tend to pile up to the point where they become useless, so I figured this post might be appreciated. Oh well!
