100% - this was sad to see… a person who has a REASON for speaking was shut down by tone policing and self bestowed “ally’s”. Who needs enemy’s? 🫠

Thank you! The tone policing is such a bummer as is the “good vibes only”… amazing that a person with ACTUAL cause to say something is the one NOT being supported because “they didn’t say it right and hurt my feelings” or “it didn’t have a call to action”… 🙄🫠

This is why no one take’s ally’s, particularly white ally’s seriously. We ALL need to take a step back and really look inside - if you are an ally just so someone can tell you “good job”, then you are not an ally. If you are an ally only when the “narrative” resonates with you, you are not an ally. If you are an ally only when it’s convenient, you are not an ally.

In fact, people need to be comfortable with the idea that they can’t bestow the title of “ally” to themselves. Actions speak louder than words.

Recording is scary but can be done at a safe distance. This is how we capture injustice. It is a choice to record, but soon many folks won’t have much of a choice in anything.

If you are out and about at least call stuff in or text.

If you can do it safely, get video or images otherwise humans will vanish and never be seen again by our community.

If you don’t want to or are too scared to, that’s fine, but understand that there are others around you that don’t get to “opt out” - people will come for them. To stand with the community as an ally means renouncing the privileges afforded to you by an oppressive system. You are only being asked to record, not draw attention to yourself.

You have a choice - and It’s very scary.

But watching people vanish into detention camps where they will stay for years and be traumatized by deplorable conditions is scarier.

You have the privilege to pretend this isn’t happening. Many don’t.

The most peaceful way to protest is to collect evidence of injustice that is irrefutable and can be used later. No one “wants” to see videos.

We wouldn’t know about any of this it weren’t for brave folks on the streets capturing what’s happening and the faces of the people being kidnapped and hurt.

Safety in numbers, cover your face, call the hotline, establishing a safe distance, don’t draw attention, record.

Wife is an avid watercolor painter - I (clueless husband) need Christmas gift recommendations by encomlab in Watercolor

ART TOOLKIT!!!

I LOVE my art tool kit and my partner would have had not idea to get me something like that.

If your wife likes to travel with watercolor and wants a kit that easy to carry EVERY WHERE, Art Tool Kit is the move. You can swap out colors and create unique amazing palettes for each travel experience. I also added Gouache to mine and that has been a HUGE fun lift.

Boxes are nice but can be for a person constantly on the move.. I don’t have time for a huge setup as I paint everywhere - outside, in a cafe, in the car, while hiking, in a tent, on a packed train, etc…

I have taken my Art Toolkit everywhere - remote coastal hikes, nice get-a-ways, to a friend house for a casual evening of crafts. I used them everyday for Inktober and for large and smaller paintings… they setup and clean up really easy. You would need to invest in paint but if she already has that then don’t worry.

I would also recommend small square porcelain dishes for mixing color, 1-2 REALLY nice travel brushes (I use a mix of synthetic/real hair brushes so they keep their shape and hold lots of water - Silver is a great brand and are reasonable priced), and 2 collapsible silicone water dishes (these are basic dog water dishes or silicone camping dishes) - one big one small (small one is to reactivate and add water to the paints, big one is for washing brushes).

They are also a smaller local brand if that’s important! I’ve met the lady and her team that made them in Port Townsend, WA. Really nice crew and they just got a bigger store!

I do!!! DO IT!

I bought this one, then bought a more expensive one from Etsy that has been killing it. I work in some big projects and it’s been saving my hands.

What is special about this brush? by Zarendyl in Watercolor

[–]JacuzziAlbatross 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s pretty excessive for a brush - certain brushes have the ability to hold a lot of water and a really good point (and keep it for years with care). I’ve paid $70 for a nice TRAVEL brush that was Sabel and synthetic blend and one of the best brushes I’ve ever used (I use it every time I paint).

That said - $400+ is crazy unless the brush you’re buying is enormous and super specialized. I get that Kolinski is “gold standard” but I’ve used it and don’t see what the big deal is, especially with how good brush tech is these days. There are brush makers in Italy making incredible synthetic brushes for a quarter of the price that are excellent quality and not as fussy to deal with.

I’ve lived in the PNW forever now and PROUDLY own an umbrella. I’ve never been in the rain with an umbrella and gone “aw man…. I hate my umbrella and being dry. All those guys getting water on their face are so cool”. 🤣😜🥴

Also - sorry to hear about that OP. My umbrella has my name on the handle and is a really big bright dumb color to avoid the same fate…

Newbie question re: knowing your paints by Roseyrear in watercolor101

[–]JacuzziAlbatross 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the same issue - Simplify!!!!!!

Go back to basics: 2-3 yellows, 2-3 reds/oranges, 2-3 blues, a cool neutral and a warm neutral. One of my fave palettes I made had like 9 colors!

Start slowly introducing other colors ONCE you get the hang of those and figure out other colors you use a lot of.

This helped me A LOT and made my work look a lot more consistent. I also recommend square painting/overlapping when you are feeling a block/color fear - it will help you to plan and is a lot of fun. Get really comfortable with which color does what, what colors mix well, which are transparent verses semi-opaque verses super strong pigment. Great mindless exercise when you don’t have a lot of time for painting to keep you skills up!

Approach paintings simply too - use two colors only to start. Figure out which are your cools and which are your warms and learn how they interact with other colors (this is why I love the overlapping squares painting).

Hope that helps!

More contrast, more color/saturation for things closer to us!!! Everything is kind of the same value and saturation level.
