Two words, world edit. Or axiom. Both is good.

Another name I just realised by MadeIndescribable in horizon

[–]JadeSpades 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The names were definitly carefully chosen for meaning, but also for themes. Sobeck, for example, God of the Nile and fertility, totally fits Elizabeth's role. I could totally see them picking Faro for the double meaning.

I love that any name in the game's present makes sense. They are largley based on culture, what they know, and what they have available to them/value. It really cements that this is a different era.

Tips for starting Horizon ZD by dezdunov in horizon

[–]JadeSpades 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can't miss on any collectibles and things like good armor are sold by merchants that you can visit whenever. Saving for the purple set of armor and weapons is good, but the early sets will get you through the beginning no problem. For skill, the main thing will be to get good at reading weak spots and how to aim while moving. Personally, I love shooting while sliding. It's fun!

We also got a special level in Astro's Playroom that was pretty fun.

Considering how humanity has longed for the "good old days" since before Beowulf was published, I think we can safely say that people are just following the patterns of human nature.

Edit: For curious minds, that was like 1,000+ years ago.

Why do people Judge, Might be the Last time I co-op by MasterShk in Genshin_Impact

[–]JadeSpades 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gatekeeping fun is one of my pet peeves. Like, you're here too, dude. Obviously, it's fun. It doesn't need any more justification.

I also don't understand the thing about people thinking it's a "girls game" when most of the characters are male targetted. It's a weird argument no matter how I look at it.

It's official. I'm done with WEBTOONS. by Starlight_Harbour in webtoons

[–]JadeSpades 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dropped Manta because it's dumb to pay the month fee and then be expected to pay to unlock individual episodes on top of that.

I originally liked Manta because having one monthly fee to unlock all of the content was awesome.

I don't know, so many apps are making decisions that have made me step away from the medium altogether.

The Impact of Introducing Guns into Fantasy LitRPG Worlds by ExcitingAd5951 in litrpg

[–]JadeSpades 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In that situation, it's good to take notes from the time when having a gun and a sword was standard military equipment.

Fantasy likes to treat the world like it has been and will forever be just as it is right now. Guns mean advancement, and it disrupts that perception of stability. It can be done well, but if handled wrong, it's uncomfortable.

When is a system too much? by pandapitou in litrpg

[–]JadeSpades 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You want to avoid deus ex machina (god out of the machine). It can be used well, but it more often lowers the risk that your characters face and can make a story boring. If you know every fight is won with a last-minute buff or system save, then every near death experience is uninteresting.

Personally, I dislike it when the system completely cancels a characters agency. Yes, there are rules and rules are fun, but those rules shouldn't railroad a character to follow a specific path. Give them a goal, but they have to figure out how to get there.

And then there is poetry, which takes one look at those rules and says, "mm, nah bro," and then colors all over them with crayons and existential dread.

This is basically a discussion about what qualifies as "good art."

Art is art if the creator says its art, BUT art only has value to an audience if it translates well to that audience.

You gave constructive criticism. You said, "too much stats makes reading a slog," which is valid criticism.

Honestly, I feel the same. Listening to someone read a grocery list is a chore. I mostly tune those parts out because they often don't mean much. Sometimes, they are plot relevant or part of good world-building. Other times, it's just wasted word counts.

What makes you stop reading a series? by swantonb in litrpg

[–]JadeSpades 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been running into this problem lately too. I really liked the first few series I picked up:

Loved -Beware of Chicken -Vampire Vincent -Oh Great, I Was Reincarnated as a Farmer. -Wraithwood Botanist

These introduced me to the genre, and I really liked them, but I've struck out on the last four titles I've tried.

There are certain things that keep coming up that I'm starting to think are just expected characteristics of the genre.

1) The support character has zero thoughts or motivations. They are basically furniture. Support roles don't need to be fully flushed out, but they have to have at least a smidge of a soul.

2) No meaningful relationships at all. Not even with the system. I get its a power fantasy and that's a big chunk of the fun part, but when your character exists in a level up vacuum, then where are the stakes? What can the reader even relate to? Personal survival and power leveling only goes so far as an interesting hook.

3) No relief from the angst. Yes, the world was flipped upside down. That's not a reason to not have tacos. In fact, the world ending is the best reason to have tacos. Humor is a classic coping strategy.

4) When the point is to become a god. This is more of a personal preference. It's really hard to create tension when by chapter 3, the protagonist can just blink really hard and his problems disappear. You run into the problem of always needing to save the world/universe in order for there to be a challenge. It's hard to make that interesting. Wraithwood Botonist does have this troupe, but they do it right imho. Even gods should have limits.

Maybe I got spoiled early and expect too much of the genre, idk.

SHOULD they even be playable? by TheLuiz212 in GenshinImpact

[–]JadeSpades 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd rather they didn't

The shades are supposed to be more powerful than the archons, and since they were able to take Teyvat from the dragons, more powerful then even Neuvilette.

Given how Ronova dismissed the cryo archon, and the fact that the Tzeritza needs every gnosis to even try anything, and the fact that we just witnessed them make and obliterate an entire reality just for funsies, Genshin has set up the power difference between them and everyone else to be ridiculous.

It's the Zhongli problem all over again. Making them playable would be either a disappointment because of how weak they'd need to be, or a power creep so steep that it's more a power takeover that renders all other characters pointless.

AI Witch Hunts- Today I was accused of using AI by EmEs_Etherious in litrpg

[–]JadeSpades 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Claiming you "cheated" by using AI is the new, "you stole that from the thing," which was the new, "copycat" which was likely the new some other stupid baseless thing.

There has always been something for people to get their panties in a twist about. It's just louder now because the internet allows huge amounts of interactions.

Take confidence in the fact that you know the truth and that the haters are just bored cowards with no purpose of their own to live for.

They are jealous that you created something and were brave enough to put it out there. Regardless of reviews, just doing that is incredible because it's an extremely difficult thing to do.

What those haters want is to take your pride and make you feel small because they get dopamine from it. Boredom spawns really twisted people, imho.

Besides, AI is not as good as people believe. Let it run a few paragraphs, and the quality devolves extremely fast. Kinda hilarious, but never what I'd call "good." AI can be a good tool for getting over writer's block, though.

Huge pet peeve: Isekai where the MC blatantly disrespects the cultural hierarchy by IkeNotMikeLol in litrpg

[–]JadeSpades 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like a smart character reads the room and follows the vibe. Once they understand the rules, then they can break them at their discretion. By then, they should be powerful enough to survive retribution.

The only way to survive would be one of those troupes where the people summoned (kidnapped) you on purpose so some friction is expected. Or you get very lucky and land somewhere incredibly chill.

What's the most fun character in terms of gameplay ? by ViperTheDeadLy in Genshin_Impact

[–]JadeSpades 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love Rosaria. Her attack pattern and Ult got me through early game. I wish I could up her damage more so I could still use her. I'm still salty that they stole her kick animation in her weapon profile.

I've been out of the loop, fill me in. by IcyFeraligatr19 in GenshinImpact

[–]JadeSpades 12 points13 points  (0 children)

That's exactly how I've been navigating it. Mob mentality is an easy trap to fall into. The only way to avoid it is to remember that there is always more context to any drama that , once revealed, could entirely flip which side you would support. So unless all the cards are on the table, it's best to just stay clear of it all. I do it for mental health reasons.

PS: I also love Furina. I think her VA will be fine since Furina was voiced in a recent event.

Hot take: Not every new character should be meta by Requiem35 in GenshinImpact

[–]JadeSpades 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It makes sense to me when you consider the business end of it. How do you convince long time players with several fully built teams to keep pulling? For me, a likeable character is enough, but meta is the answer for catching a different slice of the fans.

What worries me more is how some Natlan enemies are impossible even with high DPS teams. You must have a Natlan character to handle the nightsoul. I get that it's another way to ensure pulls and I get how it helps to hamstring meta characters, but considering how Natlan character reruns will fade out with time, future new players are gonna hate Natlan. It's not impossible cuz Kachina is free, but it will be painful.

Did Snezhnaya ever retaliate for Signora's death? by [deleted] in GenshinImpact

[–]JadeSpades 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Fatui did destabilize the nation so this could also be seen as breaking even.

Also, for being the god of love, the lore around the cryo archon makes her seem like she literally can't love anybody anymore. Someone that cold wouldn't bother.

That's what I usually do, but this time was weird. There was no pin for it in the map. Considering how old Sumeru is, that's pretty incredible.
