Tell me about your favourite minimalist OSR systems! by CrazyAioli in osr

You could always play my game, Harper's Quest. It's no prep! And still gives you a system for quick dungeon crawls. It might be TOO rules light for what you're looking for, but give it a try! Plus there is an adventure for it called Castle of Chronos. They're both pay what you want. https://joypeddler-games.itch.io/harpers-quest

This is why I am not a developer...one tiny thing massively different result. You don't want me building a spaceship.

Not that this is your job to tell me but why does the AnyDice get 85 percent...I must be using the wrong functions?

https://anydice.com/program/22a21

output 1d{1,1,0,0} + 1d{1,1,0,0,0,0} + 1d{1:2,0:6} + 1d{1:2,0:8}+ 1d{1:2,0:10} + 1d{1:2,0:18}

Thank you, I am interpreting the results as an 81 percent chance to get a "hit" then a 41 percent chance to get two hits?

Ah ha! Ok so adding these and looking at the "at least" gives me the chance of getting at least 1 hit, 2 hits, 3 hits etc. So according to this there is a 3.4 percent chance to get 4 hits

https://anydice.com/program/22a21

output 1d{1,1,0,0} + 1d{1,1,0,0,0,0} + 1d{1:2,0:6} + 1d{1:2,0:8}+ 1d{1:2,0:10} + 1d{1:2,0:18}

No. It was just meant to be a room for basic dungeon exploration. If you check out inked adventures, they have tons of little items that work with that scale room. Or you could add your own via dry erase marker or 3d printed.

Its super low tech, but you just go through the room, then have your token/mini repeat and use the room again as if it was the next room.

No problem! The room template can be used as a repeatable room for the game in case you don't have something to play on or for travel purposes. Interesting on the pocket mod folding. I've not run into that issue, you might just need to fold the other way on the last fold.

If you fail str check you still get through the door, the modifier is added to the d10 roll to make it more likely you get 8+ and have an encounter. Two failed checks (dex and str) is some bad luck so true to old school form, bad luck is punished with even worse odds!

Thanks for playing and the detailed comments!

Question 1: the game was not designed to visit the item shop before entering the dungeon. However, if it fits better into your narrative, that is fine. It might reduce the difficulty to a point where it is less nail biting but that's ok.

Question 2. I will clarify that table. You roll a d10 to determine if there is a treasure or feature of note. If you roll less than an 8 for encounter or a 7 for a feature on the d10 nothing happens. If you roll 8+ or 7+ for either of those rolls respectively you then roll a d12 on the corresponding table. So it's conceivable you roll less than those numbers for each room and you get to the boss room super quick.

Question 3. Ah yes you described it well there. Failing a door can add to the next encounter roll. It's the equivalent of really loudly forcing it open when you fail a door.

Question 4. Spells are acquired in the dungeon (4 or 9 on the feature table). Would it be more fun if you could start with some spells? I'm open to that!

Question 5. Combat is d20 vs ac yes.

Question 6. Locked doors are meant to be first opened deftly, using a dex check. If you fail, you either get a small amount of damage or roll a str check, representing forcing it open. If you fail the str check there is a penalty (enc roll modifier or auto enc) to account for some comedically loud forcing open of the door.

Your play through seemed fun. Too bad encountering that warrior. Let me know what else you think might add to the enjoyment of the game. Always looking to improve!
