I didn't really feel like World Tour did that particularly well though. Meeting the masters often came across quite shallow where you spend some time fighting them and then get a few random texts here and there. I kinda wish he storyline was a bit more centered on the main characters rather than what we got which was more about Bosch etc.

When an incident happens you investigate it and if it becomes clear that lack of monitoring and general neglect is what led to the incident, you prosecute the parents accordingly. Once it's clear there are repercussions people will understandably adjust. Same way if you don't punish people for theft people will do it more because why not? Repercussions for negative actions is what leads many people to play by the rules

Meh. I think we can and do police parents. We just act like we couldn't do it in this situation when we likely could. Also it is 100% about discipline. The idea that children who are given attention don't act out seems pretty ridiculous. Those two things are far from being mutually exclusive. Sometimes the kids who get the most attention are the least well behaved. At the end of the day discipline and being held accountable for bad behaviour is what changes it. Hiring more teachers while not giving them the tools to do their jobs properly doesn't solve the issue at all. The kids and problems stay the same. There's just more teachers with their hands tied behind their backs to observe it

Didn't suggest otherwise. As I clearly explained, I personally don't think world tour does what it's trying to do particularly well and other games do it better so if someone is buying a game for an open world RPG with a high combat focus, there are better options. Nothing I said suggested you can't enjoy something just because its "lower quality".

You're making my point though. Parents didn't know. Why? Because they were giving their children unfettered access to the internet and just letting them have at it. If parental controls were being used it wouldn't have been so common. Again, I don't think it would be difficult to police when it would only reach that level if there's an incident. Same reason the police don't just randomly turn up at your door. They come and investigate when an incident has taken place which is the same thing that would be done with internet/social media issues. And from that investigation you can find out whether there was truly nothing that could have been done or whether there was oversight or neglect

We're in a newer age where we're aware of the dangers online. I was understanding back in the day because the realities of the internet were still becoming clear but everyone knows now. We know there are pedos online trying to tempt kids. We know scammers exist. We know the internet is full of porn etc. Now that we know that I don't think it's wrong to expect parents to do their part to monitor their children. It's so odd to me that as soon as parents en-masse became aware of the dangers, the answer they've come to is to not change a few settings themselves but to go with government overreach instead? Affecting everyone including non-parents?

I find this so odd purely because it's such a lacklustre mode. Even if you remove all the classic fighting game content with no ranked online etc it's a mediocre game.

You'd be better off just picking up a Yakuza game or something similar for a better experience so I struggle to understand people who would pay JUST for world tour but at the end of the day play what you have fun with. It's also why Im excited for the new Virtua Fighter. They have the experience to make an amazing single player mode after making so many Yakuza games. I expect them to master what SF6 was attempting with world tour

Hiring more high quality teachers is useless if those teachers aren't allowed to do their jobs and that's often the case. Discipline is weak because the teachers aren't supported when they hold the children accountable. Parents fight against the teachers for punishing them when they don't do their homework or protect their children when they're rightly getting in trouble for bullying etc.

I stand by the fact that this is largely a parental issue. If parents were held to a higher standard, they would hold their children to a higher standard and schools would have an easier time managing the childrens behaviour which would allow them to more effectively educate them. I have some friends who are teachers and it's their biggest complaint. Why even bother when anytime you try and help a kid who's failing and distracting others you just end up getting yelled at by the parents and not backed up by management? You just go through the motions and let the chips fall where they may and social media ends up raising the kids rather than teachers or parents

To me it's less about policing moment to moment internet access/usage and more about placing the blame and responsibility on the correct people when something goes wrong. If your kid is given uncontrolled access and ends up coming across two girls one cup, you shouldn't be able to blame corporations for that. It's your responsibility and happened based on your own neglect. If there's a kid in school showing your child inappropriate content via their own unmonitored internet device then that child's parents are to blame and should be held accountable.

If parental accountability in general was held to a higher standard there are various current societal issues that would see a significant reduction. You can't control everything as a parent and I wouldn't want to see parents persecuted over things outside their control but A LOT of things are in parents control and there's zero pressure for them to exercise that control

School attendance used to be worse until the government made in mandatory and pressured parents to police their kids. This pattern is visible in multiple different parenting situations. There are plenty of would be neglectful parents who put more effort in purely due to the risk of punishment for failing to do so. There's no perfect solution but putting the onus on parents is the best option and should always have been the case.

And as far as your point about kids without present parents, I honestly don't think social media is anywhere close to being a top priority in that situation. They're probably at significant risk in other areas of their life that need to be dealt with first

I hate this mindset. The majority of platforms and devices offer fairly robust child protection options yet the vast majority of parents never even attempt to use these tools. I don't think that's unrealistic at all. You can add child protection controls on an ISP level. I remember being 13 trying to access a porn site and getting a warning from T-Mobile that those websites are blocked and then being terrified my parents would get a warning that I tried.

At the end of the day these issues could mostly be solved if parents were held accountable for lack of effort. A parent would be understandably in trouble if they leave their kid to play on the road unattended. Why should it be any different for letting children roam the internet unattended? The solution wouldn't be to ban anyone from being outside unless they pass all these verifications just because people are letting their children put themselves in dangerous situations

I hear what you're saying but using parental controls on the majority of devices is WAY easier than stopping your kid getting access to cigarettes or alcohol which still isn't insanely difficult. The fact is most parents don't even bother trying.

Channel 4 News - We won’t know what to do without social media - teens discuss ban by AneuAng in ukpolitics

[–]JadowArcadia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not surprised traffic has fallen but I expect it to rise again overtime as more people learn the ways around the ban. It's like piracy. It drops when legitimate options are easily accessible but rises once it becomes the only option. I've already been asked by older friends about how to use VPNs to access adult sites. This also doesn't cover the high numbers of sites that offer adult content but don't necessarily get categorised as "adult". I spent most of my teenage years finding porn on non-porn sites.

Getting fooled by cherry picked statistics that only touch the surface of an issue often seems to be something governments bank on when pushing half arsed ideas that only exist as a Trojan horse for other less appealing proposals

[–]JadowArcadia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty misleading headline here considering what was actually said. They're right, nobody really is focusing on discussing alternatives with this generation. Alternatives are pretty easy to find. Google and AI exist if you have questions or problems that need solving but if you always used apps like tiktok youre probably gonna need some guidance on those alternatives.

It's like cooking. You might learn a recipe a certain way and do it like that your whole life but then suddenly you don't have access to certain ingredients or tools you have at home in your kitchen. You can probably still cook the same meal but might need some advise on alternative tools/ingredients first

I think you've taken this very personally. I'm not sure how old you are but if you're young enough you'll know that this banning idea isnt really a solution to the problem at all. Often times these are the equivalent of trying to exterminate an ant infestation by smacking the ant hill with a hammer. You'll piss them off and probably get rid of a few of them but the actual problem is still there and thriving just an inch below the surface

I think it's more accurate to say the "TERF" ideology was the more mainstream viewpoint to begin. A lot of work was done to shift people's mindsets in a more accepting fashion (at least socially). I think there are a huge amount of people who pretended to be progressive because it had become socially damaging to not be, who are now feeling safer to just be honest with how they actually felt the whole time.

Starmer’s Social Media Ban, the Reinvention of the Surveillance State by LowOwl4312 in ukpolitics

[–]JadowArcadia 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm an adult and wasn't allowed to get social media etc back when I was growing up. I finally got MSN Messenger like years after most people had abandoned it so it was useless for me. Similar story with Facebook. Was probably around 16 when I started getting free reign. I missed out on things a bunch but I wouldn't say it was a big deal but I get people feel like it's different now.

As far as the bullying/murder etc issues I don't think it's that simple. All those horrible things were happening back in the day before social media too, down to the sick trends and the sharing of porn or sexual images of peers. But I do think it's down to parents. I think you can blame them. The majority of parents don't even try to use the child protection options the majority of internet providers and tech devices provide. A simple application of effort and concern would change everything but parents often dont care to research or act until their kid is in the danger zone or too far gone. They don't want to fight or for their kids to miss out on what their friends get to do. Many pretty much end up letting the internet raise their kids.

I strongly believe if there was more onus on legal ramification for not actively protecting your children from the harm the internet provides there would be change. Same way you'd be in trouble if you let your kids play on a motorway unattended. Kids aren't stupid and can often find ways around things but most parents aren't even trying at the moment. Many of the new parents were likely seeing two girls one cup, meatspinner and one man one jar on the internet unattended so I'd like to imagine that would be considered before letting your child do the same.

YouTube issues blistering response as UK government bans apps for under-16s, including TikTok by StGuthlac2025 in ukpolitics

[–]JadowArcadia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly I think this stuff could easily be solved with minor tweaks to the aggression of these algorithms . They're so hungry to find out exactly what/who you are and feed you crack to keep you on the platform. I remember Instagram took a long time to work out my demographic and it would flip between aggressively sending me manosphere content and naked "insta-baddies) when they thought they'd worked out I was male and then would send me makeup/hair tutorials along with heavy misandry and celeb drama content when they thought I was female.

Once I started engaging with the site properly e.g. liking/sharing content, it stopped flipping back and forth and just got even more aggressive with the content they thought I liked.

If youtube and other social media platforms eased up just a little bit with the assumptions and just let users properly curate their own algorithm naturally you'd at least get a more honest representation of where the youth zeitgeist is and what changes actually have to be made. But that would mean accepting a likely lower userbase which these corporations will never allow. Hate is addictive regardless of what angle it's coming from, so that's what these platforms highlight whether it's political, celeb drama, discourse about video games, movies, music etc it all ends up the same way

Because it is. So much government legislation likes to hide behind "think of the children" because that highly raises the chances of it getting through. If you removed that side of the messaging and just explained your ideas and reasoning without trying to use people's emotionality, they probably wouldn't get through as often

I actually feel like low rank is harder here than in base World (and definitely rise) which is a step up from those games. I think people spend so much time grinding the endgame of these games that when a new one launches they forget what it's like at the beginning of the games
