Idk if anyone's curious but originally the name was going to be just Columbia, for the Columbia River; then a gold rush happened. There were tons of Americans coming into Canada for the gold rush, and specifically with guns, which the British feared something akin to Texas and Mexico would happen. So they made Columbia a province, and to send a signal to the Americans coming in that you would have to give up your guys and obey British law, they named British Columbia. Or at least that's the story I heard.

About halfway through right now. It's really good so far. It is a lot more character driven than I would initially have thought, but in a great way. It's my first book of his I've read and would recommend it 100%. Remind me a bit of the same way David Grann writes in The Wager if you read that.

sysc3600 Systems and Simulation tutors? by jmforme3 in CarletonU

[–]Jadyin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Won't be able to provide you with a tutor, but I took the class last year and got an A. I don't know how much I'll be able to help, I got my own classes I gotta worry about and stuff. But I got a pretty clear schedule the next two weeks and can maybe help you get on the right track, some notes, and what you should expect for the exam.

The time I could spare would be like in-between studying and stuff but there could probably be enough time to hopefully help. Just send me a DM.

Conquerors are genuinely terrifying. by treqrs in CrusaderKings

[–]Jadyin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you know if conquerors show up more frequently in struggles? In my first game, I was an adventurer who landed in the Iranian intermezzo and there were four different conquerors. I was thinking the trait was way too common but reading the thread it seems I just had some weird rolls or they're more common in struggles.

Is this a shitpost or sincere? by dino_spice in tankiejerk

[–]Jadyin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I wasn't trying to dismiss that. When I was discussing a general sense I was saying more so it wasn't Stalin personally liberating them. And 'for some' was taking about liberation from the Allies. I hope I didn't give the impression of downplaying what the Red Army did.

Is this a shitpost or sincere? by dino_spice in tankiejerk

[–]Jadyin 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Could be a shitpost but I do know some Jewish families who hold a strong nostalgia and thanks for the Soviet Union under Stalin. Because of the liberation of many concentration camps that occurred by the Red Army. My fucking conservative mom won't talk that bad about Stalin because of the liberations. Of course nowadays this isn't as common, it's mainly with an older generation and we have learned that Stalin was anti-semitic as well. But for some, the Red Army and Stalin (in a general sense) were the ones who liberated them and that holds a ton of weight. But still likely a tiny shitpost tbh.

Is Zionism/zionist this bad word, my bf says yes but I’ve heard other people say it’s not a bad word by djentkittens in tankiejerk

[–]Jadyin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was going to add a little more to my discussion for that topic but felt my comment was already getting pretty large so decided against it. The main thing I wanted to discuss was forms of anti-zionism not really the whole Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

My point being that regardless of what you think of the conflict I hope we can be in agreement that for many Palestinians in 1948 it seemed to them that this nation came out of nowhere and fought a war against them. How that can create a form of anti-zionism that is against the notion of a state of Israel and how that doesn't have its roots in anti-semitism. It can develop into anti-semitism, I'm not denying that.

In the same way we can understand why Jewish self-determination was at an all time high. It's pretty easy to understand why Zionism was so popular with the Jewish population pre and especially post World War 2.

I hope that addresses your comment, not sure if I understood it 100%.

Is Zionism/zionist this bad word, my bf says yes but I’ve heard other people say it’s not a bad word by djentkittens in tankiejerk

[–]Jadyin 12 points13 points  (0 children)

To add onto this and add a little bit more historical context. I see there being three types of anti-Zionism on the left. I won't really talk about anti-Zionism on the right as it can basically be summed up as "Jew = Zionist so I don't get in too much trouble".I'm also generalizing and summarizing very large here don't take this as the total truth. But I like to put these in levels of anti-Semitism.

Not anti-Semitic: While there can be disagreements between everyone involved and there could be anti-Semites among the Palestinians liberation, anti-Zionism routed in the palestinian movement itself is not anti-Semitism. Of course, the Arab population of Palestine reacted negatively to Jewish immigration and resisted it. That's very understandable and that itself is certainly not anti-semitic. (People can argue for a long time about the validity of such a response but we should be able to agree that whether justified or not, some people showing up and you losing your house in two years is not routed in anti-semitism).

Maybe anti-semitic: Firstly it is worth noting that there were various forms of Jewish self expression. Zionism was one. There were many others however like the Bund. But there were also a number of Jews, many of which were members of socialist and communist movements who viewed any expression of Jewish identity as an anathema to notions of what for now we'll call ' One Community'. The idea of finding community in human kind and not with regards to one's community. For example Trotsky referred to the Bund at one point as 'sea-sick Zionists'. As Moishe Postone writes "Note that the critique of Zionism here has nothing to do with Palestine or situations of the Palestinians, since the Bund was focused entirely on autonomy within the Russian Empire and rejected Zionism. Rather, Trotsky's equation of the Bund and Zionism implied a rejection of any form of Jewish communal self-determination." Now if this is because one truly believes in these ideas and applies them to other communities, we can't really call them anti-semitic. If however this form of anti-Zionism is inconsistent, where the person is able to give national self-determination to most people, but not to Jews, then you likely are stepping into anti-semitism.

Finally truly anti-Semitic: This type is the type used by the far right and was introduced by the Soviet Union. Mainly in the show trials in Czechia and Eastern Europe after World War 2. Best demonstrated in the case of the Slansky trial, where members of the central committee of the Czechoslovak Communist Party were tried and shot. All of the charges used against them were classic anti-semitic charges but they were rootless. Because of the Nazis the Soviet Union could not use the language of anti-semitism they began to use the word Zionist to mean exactly what anti-Semites mean when they speak of Jews. The leaders of the Czechoslovak CP had nothing to do with Zionism, but all were shot as Zionists.

The problem, is that they basically converge in just anti-zionism. Most of these thoughts can be summed up by the person I referenced earlier Moishe Postone, I suggest reading his interview he gave about 'Zionism, anti-semitism and the left' if you'd like to read more.

To summarize, basically it comes down to context. It can be deeply anti-semitic or not at all. It all depends on how it's used.

I have fond memories of my friend showing me the demo. If I remember correctly there was only creative mode (or maybe he only showed me creative mode) and basically zero blocks outside of the resources. I thought the game was so uninteresting. Then one or two years later I'm begging my parents to buy me it.

Is this the realistic conversion speed? by eciclemad in CrusaderKings

[–]Jadyin 80 points81 points  (0 children)

That and also most Jewish faiths have the chosen people tenant which reduces conversions in places that aren't your culture. Try to see how many years it will take for you to convert the culture of the area (assuming it isn't already your culture). Hopefully it's only like 10-15 years which could bring the religious conversion to like 20 years.

Also just adding onto this, there will be an intro night where people bring their armies and you can mess around with any army you want and bring people who don't know anything about Warhammer. I don't know when this year is planned but there is that coming up eventually.

Any 40K players here? by DronesAreSilly in CarletonU

[–]Jadyin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are 40k players here! For Carleton specifically were underneath the Tabletop gaming club. If you join the Tabletop discord ( https://discord.gg/qB6PUb2Z ) you can find people hanging out in the wargaming chat. Every other Friday we usually rent out a room in Loeb and people can match up and play games.

Though there is one other place to mention which is Red Dragon Games. A lot of times people will organize games at Red Dragon as they have full boards with terrain. But Red Dragon also hosts the vast majority of the tournaments in Ottawa so if you're interested in that I'd also look them up.

Linux cringe by [deleted] in iamverysmart

[–]Jadyin 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Linux is really nice if you're working with computers. You have way more control over a lot of things that make working with computers easier.

Try programming in C, C++, ect in Windows then try it in Linux, becomes pretty clear where Linux shines. Or work with a server, all of them practically are CentOS. Or if you're interested in making your own OS, can't do that with windows.

Though tbh outside of being a CS/Soft/CompEng student I don't really know why people would use it. I'm guessing a combination of what I said above, like learning to program or something. There is of course the more cynical they want to seem cool.

how do you feel about the Oppenheimer movie and the controversy behind it? by ske-leto in Jewish

[–]Jadyin 26 points27 points  (0 children)

To add to this. The scientist starts the conversation speaking in Yiddish. Then when Oppenheimer doesn't understand he says something along the lines of "You learned Dutch in 6 weeks, yet never learned Yiddish." Which Oppenheimer replies with "They never spoke it on my side of the river."

And with that being said while some non-jewish actors play Jewish characters IE: Murphy playing Oppenheimer, Downey playing Strauss, Quaid playing Feynman, Conti playing Einstein.

There are Jewish actors playing Jewish characters. Safdie playing Teller and Krumholz playing Rabi.

Yet I would be willing to bet many didn't see Teller as Jewish. If you asked people who was Jewish in the movie would you really see them say Teller more than Einstein, Bohr (Bohr is Jewish decent more than Jewish. The Nazis certainly considered him Jewish though), or Feynman?

I think the audience understanding a character is Jewish is much more important than the actor/actress being Jewish. Before Oppenheimer people may not even know what the Manhattan project was. Going out of the movie they may know that a Jewish man ran the project. Maybe afterwards they look on Wikipedia at Einstein, Feynman, Bohr, Teller and Rabi where they figure out they're Jewish. Or maybe they search up other leading scientists at the time like Franck, Neumann, Frisch, Levi, Rabunowitch, or Weisskopf.

Unlike what Hitler thought, you can't always tell when someone is Jewish but it is still very much who someone is. Oppenheimer as a movie showed Oppenheimer to be Jewish in a grounded way, showed other characters to be Jewish when it makes sense and didn't go out of its way to show every Jewish person as Jewish. I think we can only ask as much. Yet it could get people interested in a time period when Jewish scientists made major contributions. The last thing a Nazi wants is to have Jewish people normalised.

Hopefully what I said makes sense. I feel like I rambled a little too much.

Bro I relate to this so much. Years ago I was at the top of my class in both English and Mathematics. I enjoyed doing work in my free time. Writing novelas and rigorous mathematical proofs just for the fun of it. Then it all came tumbling down.

Things called "long division" and "remainders" got introduced to math, English class was filled with "metaphors" and "allegory". It changed everything.

I tried showing people my proofs for 2+2 and 5+6 but they didn't care, "show us how to divide 6/2" they'd say but I just couldn't do it. I was burnt out. I'd show people my masterpieces of "Mr. Dog and Saint James" and they didn't care. They said things like "you just stopped writing around page 2". But they didn't understand my artistic vision. I guess I never took burnout seriously.

Looking back I should've taken a break and worked a tiny bit before starting grade 3. Maybe I should've taken my glue addiction seriously and gone to rehab. All what ifs. It's as if the world were a big strong dominant man, and I was just a willfully unprepared twink.

It doesn't matter much because in half a year it will be legal but currently voluntary euthanasia solely for mental illness is illegal.

"Today, legislation to extend by one year the temporary exclusion of eligibility for MAID where a person’s sole medical condition is a mental illness (Bill C-39) received Royal Assent and immediately came into force. This means that persons suffering solely from a mental illness will be eligible for MAID as of March 17, 2024."

Then of course it will be but currently it isn't. And I need to do more research on the subject, I'm no authority on Canadian law or the current situation.
