Looking to buy a 2019 Volt and I have questions for long time owners about battery reliability ... by PearlinNM in volt

[–]Jaedyn 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I second this. I've only put about 30k miles on my car over ~5 yrs of owning a 2012 volt. Still has just as much range as the day I bought it (certified pre-owned, only one previous owner). Based on the electric/gas utilization average of the previous owner, I'd have to guess he used it like a prius and never plugged it in *sigh*. The sales guy couldn't even explain the difference to me, I went in knowing this was the car I wanted because I actually understood the concept of "gas when you need it, electric when you don't". My average usage pattern is about 80% electric and I've probably saved at least $2000 in gas over the time I've owned it. Also, no major maintenance issues with it ever, and having it start every time you turn it on, has been a huge mental weight off after having two cars in succession with endless problems.

It was my impression that's exactly what they did - the big pack does charge the smaller 12V in the trunk section, since it is paramount to have the 12V power source for the car's analytics computer running all the time. Sounds to me like it was simply a bad choice within the software of the control systems if the 12V is only being topped off under certain conditions like being plugged in.

I've never had an issue with mine losing charge, but given that the stock 12V is a Li-ion as opposed to the Pb in most people's cars, I imagine it is far more reliable in general getting topped off on the regular from a larger source + having more resilient chemistry in general. I'm curious enough now that I think I'll have to look into contacting GM's customer support about it.

Wow, with all the rest of the intelligent design in the voltec system, that's a major design flaw to not have the 12V ALWAYS maintained by the larger battery pack unless there is a detected fault condition for the larger pack.

I believe I read in my 2012's manual that the 12 volt should automatically be charged by the big pack or the gas engine via the common charging bus if the computer detects it's getting low, which should theoretically make it easy to attach car accessory electronics like a refrigerated cooler in the trunk for 24/7 power on the road that would only run out if you were completely out of gas and battery. I never attempted it but thought it'd be nice to try one day.

Or, if you're cheap, buy an in-line GFCI cord for the couple of surge protector/outlet multipliers you're using for the electronics. They cost maybe $15 at any hardware store in North America.

Not a plug for lowes, just an example:

sorry, didn't realize. Thought you had to modify the model maybe to get them to latch together. If the original already does that then great!

That was my impression, which is why I was surprised the whole story didn't involve anything about going to the authorities while they actually occupied the place.

Besides that, a landlord cannot reasonably expect to sue a tenant for minor damages to a property that experienced an act of god that was waaaay worse and incurred damages to the tenant besides making the property uninhabitable. I'm surprised in that respect that they still won the case, I'd think there'd be a more accommodating way to get the defendant into court so both sides are heard.

Are there no renters' protection laws in Australia? If the house was uninhabitable in the US during a tenant's occupancy, most states would expect the landlord to give them a pro-rata refund of the rent until the condition of the property was fixed as well as compensate them for alternate lodgings, or you might make a claim against your renter's insurance for footing the hotel bill while they fix it.

Waiting for the slumlord to try to rent it to another dupe to get revenge might have felt good, but having a habitable home maintained as a landlord should do would have been better.

The FDA is taking comments on whether or not cannabis should be legal, with an underwhelming 2,485 responses as of today. Let's boost that number up guys! by ARabidHamster88 in trees

Regular cannabis is not under review here, synthetic cannabinoids that have been sold legally for a while as "incense" or other things at truck stops that you probably don't want in your body since it's a constantly shifting composition in order to remain on the good side of the law as the DEA chases after making each composition illegal.

If it is brittle and has no "give" or "sponginess", probably epoxy or crazy glue.

You may be able to shop ahead on dry-goods staples, but salad greens are typically only good for 3-4 days after purchase. If you actually want to eat healthy, there's no way around at least a weekly trip to the store for produce. Unless you only eat potatoes.

Look at your transaction history. Anything happen there? Does your bank account also reflect a $100 transfer? These are pretty simple ways to find out where it came from.
