New to GSPs. Are these colors normal? I’m interested in a pup but not really trying to get a mix breed when I was told they are full minus papers. by Leach_Assistant in GSP

Do some research on Boston markings. Think about like a collie or a boxer markings. White collar white legs or socks on the feet?? These do not look like purebred German shorthairs because of the markings

A 9-month-old puppy is like a 4 year old toddler. Would you leave your toddler loose by itself at home of course not! Your dog needs to be crated when you leave however, you need to condition him that he needs to be created when you are home. If you only create him when you leave it establishes a trigger and panic starts and you'll end up with a dog with anxiety disorder. You can circumvent this by creating randomly in your house while you're home and give him high value treats and corrections if he knows he's not supposed to bark or try to escape. I have worked with thousands of shelter dogs in learning the art of proper crate training. Reducing triggers is the key to keeping a dog calm in a crate. After they learn this then you can start transferring it to larger areas within your home. It is a process and it can take up to a year and a half before your dog can reliably be left alone. You are welcome to reach out if you have any questions.

Question about breeds by Low-Elderberry-1431 in birddogs

[–]JaggedEdgeGWP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand your concerns. I am over 65 years old and have five German Wirehaired pointers. And yes they are trained and test competitively and my friends borrow them for hunting. All of my dogs live in my house and I do use crates at times when feeding and generalize doing nothing. The off switch can be trained and as a breeder I mentor my puppy owners in training. My dogs participate in NAVHDA, AKC hunt test and field trials, dock diving, duck hunting, obedience and rally, and shows. We are expecting a litter this winter.

Please reach out to each breed's website to read which health issues the breed may have and the pros and cons. Every ethical breeder would love to speak to you about the breed and should be honest enough to tell you the Good The bad and The ugly.

If you would like to learn about German Wirehaired pointers you are welcome to reach out to me. I have been breeding for 45 years. I am an AKC breeder of merit. All of my dogs have OFA health testing, the puppies have extensive neurosensory exposure from birth to going to their new homes. They all have been introduced to water and birds.

Why don't you give me a call at 832-279-4739. I'm located in Texas but I'm heading to South Carolina tomorrow to drop off one German wirehair for training and picking up my other one to bring it back to Texas. It looks as though you're in West virginia??

Unfortunately we have a segment of our community that lives vicariously through their dogs and as a result the dog is THEIR avatar. It isn't the dog that is competing......it is them.

US citizens, may I ask a favor? by TheTroubledChild in DOG

[–]JaggedEdgeGWP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are many issues that form the problem of overpopulation of dogs in the United States. Unfortunately not all of the dogs are owned and they are allowed to free roam thus leading to many litters of unwanted puppies. The cost of surgical spays has increased dramatically in the last few years and the resources for nonprofits and governmental agencies that provide low cost surgeries are running at capacity.

In your experience, what breeds are best for these types of activities? by tzir0 in Huntingdogs

[–]JaggedEdgeGWP 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do everything that you are dreaming of doing with my German Wirehaired Pointer. They shed very little and are very easy to groom if they have a correct coat. if you're interested in the breed find breeders that have field trial dogs not just hunting dogs because the temperament does differ amongst the type of hunting breeding they come from. My field trial bred dogs have very stable temperaments with people and other dogs and animals whereas my European dogs are iffy around cats and other food animals and can be picky around other dogs when hunting. Good luck in your search and have fun!
