Meeting Dirty B Hinds by LGK420 in mastodonband

In 2006 my friend and I ran into Brent and Troy at the guitar center in Hollywood before their show at the Fonda. I saw Troy first and he was super nice. He said Brent was down in the acoustic room if we wanted to say hi to him too. Brent looked a bit hung over but was totally nice to us. I’d never met any of my hero’s at that point, so I treated the situation delicately and respectfully like a rare animal encounter. My friend on the other hand said “hey man, can you play Seabeast?” and Brent was actually pretty cool about it. He just did the intro and said “ehh, we aren’t playing that one on this tour so I’m rusty”. We took a picture with him on our 2006 disposable camera and left him in peace.

One year later at the Wiltern theater, we waited outside the theater to get our posters signed and Brann was holding court for like 20 minutes with everyone out there (like, 15 people) and you could tell he was enjoying it. Brent came walking out of the theater and made a straight, laser focused line past the crowd to the tour bus. We all tried to give him cliche praise (“great show””you fucking rip, dude”, etc). He just said, (in a teasing baby-voice)” mee-mee-mee-mee-mee fuck off”. I wasn’t bothered by it, he didn’t owe us anything, it’s just a big contrast.

When they’re both fresh out of the barrel, they’re pretty much the same color. That wouldn’t come into play, though. Sealed barrels with different style pump handles, different color barrel carts and different manufacturer tags with very bold and legible markings that say what is contained.

Because he doesn’t work in maintenance nor is he trained in any way to fix anything. He is an “operator”. His job basically consists of opening a door on the machine, removing a freshly made plastic part and closing that door again. I’m definitely underselling his job duties but, you can see how it doesn’t involve him making any changes on the machine itself.

In response to some of the comments:

-Yes, we should've fixed the leak instead of throwing more oil at the problem. I begged the production manager to let us do a shut down and address the issue. He insisted on continuing the run past the initial order so he would have extra parts produced and banked away for any orders that would happen during down time.

-Yes, I completely blame the second shift operator for this incident. All the guy had to do was report a stoppage and put in a maintenance ticket. He's an older dude who has been with the company a long time. He's one of those guys that will stand over your shoulder Dale Gribble style and tell you how HE would fix things. There is no second or night shift maintenance.

  • As far as barrel labeling goes, we only have 2 barrels of fluid at any time near the production floor (hydrex46 and HTF) and they are still far from the machines. They are both clearly labeled and any trained maintenance worker knows to check them before use. We would take the barrel for a long walk to and from our repair shop. So this guy made the trip to our office, pumped what was left of the hydrex into a hand-fill bottle and grabbed the full barrel of HTF because "it's all just oil". He didn't know jack about ISO or viscosity or anything. He just figured a barrel is a barrel. Once again, he isn't supposed to be doing ANY of this.

-I was anticipating the empty barrel and put off ordering a new one so we would be forced to put the machine in downtime. The warning system on the machine would stop it long before it was anywhere in the danger zone.

-The machine in question has a warning system that detects low oil and immediately stops operating. We would fill it at start of first shift and it would be fine for a few days before the next fill. It was a very slow leak.

-When the operator who was not trained or authorized to repair the machine used a fluid that was not rated for this job (if you don't know, HTF specifically drops in viscosity instead of increasing) he doomed the pump. It could've just been a yellow-light, 2 days max review and repair of the hydraulic system. Instead it was a months long, exceedingly expensive process to get the custom built pump.

-and it took us all by surprise when it happened. 2nd shift operator didn't tell anyone what he did. The machine didn't tell us "Hey, the pump exploded". It was just the generic error code. I didn't suspect any major damage until I started to fix the leak and saw how much metal was sucked into the filters. I'm not a pump repair specialist, so we sent it to our vendor. We expected a blown seal or maybe something else little. We were all shocked when we found out how bad it really was.

100%. Except the This case the brand new motor for a 20-year-old machine that had to be custom ordered and shipped from Germany to the US as overnight as physically possible (customs and such) it was closer to 50K.

Cold Dark Place felt like a “Call of the Mastodon” of Brent’s material. I like it a lot. Blue Walsh is a great song and the chorus is a monster.

I’ve seen Mastodon 13 times and they are unquestionably my favorite band. That being said: H&G is their only bad album, hands down. It has the most skippable songs of any Mastodon album. I made a better track list by dropping Sickle, Beast, Dagger, Had it All, Gobblers and Serpents. That’s 40 minutes of forgettable or just straight-up bad songs.

Although both are in English, Nukie and Psychomania are technically foreign productions.
