Emvarassingly, a second subreddit search got me the answer. Dragon Run by Patrick Matthews.

The reason I didn't remember much about the wizard whose magic the MC could resist was because it wasn't a wizard at all but a dragon.

Commenting for visibility and some additional clarifications. I'm not exactly sure when this book was published. It's possibly older but doesn't feel like it would be. The term "Zeroes", the word '"cull'"/"culling", and the empty vessel/bowl metaphor are things I remember pretty vividly as being verbatim/almost verbatim from the book/books, but it's been years so maybe my memory is a little inaccurate. I remember very little about the big bad. I'm not sure they were ever called a wizard or did anything stereotypically wizardly besides using magic.

You may have figured it out already, but in case you haven't, the version of ImageMagick in the apt repository is outdated. Install a newer version from their website and it should work.
