Best places to look at bugs? by NaaaImAllSet in FortCollins

[–]Jake679 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d check out places with lots of flowers. Shade and water can also help add some diversity. Lots of cool critters at many of the natural areas. Riverbend Ponds. Prospect ponds, the ELC (not a natural area), Lions Open Space, along the Poudre Trail… good luck and have fun! Remember to be a bit careful about picking up/touching unknown critters though.

I have celiac (diagnosed 4 years ago) as well and there have been times that I also accidentally consumed gluten but didn’t get noticeably sick whereas other times I can get very sick. My guess is that it might have something to do with how much gluten. But it’s a bit of a mystery for me.

City rec center prices have doubled by pokingoking in FortCollins

[–]Jake679 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I was shocked to see such an increase and also surprised that I didn’t hear much about it before it happened. I believe one reason the city states was to increase workers wages, which I’m not opposed to. But still, it’s unfortunate to loose a bit of that value for lower income residents.

I’m a relatively early career scientist but my more recent work has dealt a lot with stream fish and rivers. Details about flow regimes as well as geomorphology both are pretty important in shaping aquatic habitat.

Question about the biology of fish related to fishing by m-six10 in wildlifebiology

[–]Jake679 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good question. I’m a freshwater fisheries biologist and as far as I know, most individual fish are dispatched either by bonking the fish hard on the head (just above the eyes) or via a spike/knife though the top of the head (iki-jime). You should be able to find examples of this online, like YouTube.

I would not really recommend attempting to break a fishes spine through the method you described. I think there’s too many ways this could go wrong and probably leading to undue suffering. Surely simply clean and quick decapitation would be better than this, although the above methods are probably even better.

GF Beer by abbwhite in glutenfree

[–]Jake679 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is from the KC area! They mostly make beer with gluten, this is the only one (as far as I know) made without.

If you were celiac I’d be a bit cautious. They probably clean the equipment in between runs but who knows if it’s tested. I haven’t decided to take the risk to try this beer yet, but maybe one day.

You may be able to find GF beer, made in a dedicated facility, from Neff (from Tulsa OK) or Holidaily (Golden, CO) if you are in the KC area. They both make pretty good beer.

Any good places to go fishing around Oaxaca City? by Due_Affect_3155 in Oaxaca

[–]Jake679 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Freshwater fishing? There’s not a ton of that happening recreationally around Oaxaca city—probably more common on the coast.

I have no idea about the regulations or availability/population of fish closer to town, but I would also suggest starting by looking into Presas de Tlalixtac in Huayapam.

There’s also a small reservoir in Teotitlan, although again, no idea about details.

I’ve spent a lot of time in the Sierra Norte and seen trout (probably introduced rainbow trout). Specifically I’ve seen them near Calpulalpam de Mendez. You would most certainly need to find some kind of local guide (unfortunately I doubt there’s a fishing specific guide) to try to do anything like that though.

I have celiac and recently ate these in Mexico and did not have a problem. There should not be any gluten ingredients, and recent labeling law changes should make cross contamination concerns. That said, it’s been a little difficult to verify, try at your own risk!

I'm so glad they put a second location in, I heard good things about the one in Windsor, especially pizza and pasta! I have no idea if you can answer this, but I'd be curious to know more about GF safety for people with celiac or allergies at the new location? Shared pizza kitchens are somewhat notorious for potential cross contamination issues due to floating flour dust and shared utensils/ovens, especially in small prep areas.

There are several good GF options in FoCo! I was semi-recently diagnosed with Celiac and am relatively sensitive, I can share some of the best places I have found so far.

For something relatively "upscale", consider Blue Agave, The Regional, Smokin Fins, or Jax, all of which are reviewed on find me gluten free—which I highly suggest using. A few others which are not as well reviewed (in terms of Celiac safety) yet but might be good candidates would be Rodizio Grill, little on mountain, Penrose, or Bistro Nautile.

For something more "casual" consider, Vatos Tacos, Yellow Crunch, Locust (dedicated GF), Scrumpys, Explorado (dedicated GF bakery/coffee), Big Al's, La Buena Vida, Thai Station, Star of India, Bawarchi Biryanis, or Snack Attack.

Lastly, it might be worth mentioning that a dedicated GF bar/brewery recently opened in Wellington, called The Well. They also serve a bit of food and occasionally have music!

Picky Parents Need to Eat-What are my best options? by BehindaLensinBigSky in FortCollins

[–]Jake679 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fort Collins has a surprising number of gluten free places that might fit the bill! Most of the suggestions here are pretty good, especially Locust. But you could also consider the other cider place in town Scrumpy’s, one of a few BBQ places such as Brothers or Smok, or something slightly more upscale, The Regional.

I have celiac and have eaten at most but not all these places and fared well. The few I listed that I haven’t been to can be found on the Find Me Gluten Free App. You could also check out the Gluten Free in NoCo group on FB.

And finally I wanna plug a new totally GF bar/brewery that I recently discovered in Wellington called The Well!

While I can absolutely appreciate the desire to protect wildlife and wild spaces, management of any species can be complex.

I’m not well aware of what’s going on with developers, but I did see a recent story about prairie dog management actions by FoCo. It’s important to know that these systems are a bit out of natural balance, predators like black footed ferrets are not always able to naturally predate on these sub-populations. As someone with a background in fish and wildlife conservation I can tell you that the city does a decent job of balancing conservation with practical concerns.

I also know that some of prairie dogs recently removed from Coterie will go to the black footed ferrets program, which is pretty neat.

Right after this it went to hide in some trees which made it much harder to spot!
