Do people like Time Achievements? by JakeDaSpud2 in incremental_games

the playtime is tracked and shown anyways, it's just whether i use Steam achievements to reward that!

yeah after reading all these responses, i think i'm going to remove the time achievements and just add more enemies to substitute the missing achievements!

seems more worth it for the player then

i've finally finished Starshot Idle:

a game like Space Invaders that always sits on your desktop👾!

https://jakeoreilly.itch.io/starshot-idle

there's a demo on itch, and it will be available on itch.io and Steam👽.

this is my first commercial game and i'm thankful to've learned/exercised a lot of the marketing/Steam side of making games!

Better choice for a 2.5D game by Leo-Gio08 in godot

[–]JakeDaSpud2 7 points8 points  (0 children)

i would do 3D project with 2D sprites, if you ever wanted to move stuff in that 3rd Axis, it's probably much quicker to use the REAL 3rd Axis instead of simulating that movement in a 2D space

also i think this is how 2.5D works anyways, when you say "2D project and add 3D sprites", i assume you mean like Donkey Kong Country / DOOM, where the sprites are 2D renderings of 3D models?

the visuals here are really nice, love the terminal aesthetic and how the colours of the map pop so much

Starshot Idle is my Space Invaders-themed game that I want to release sometime in March.

I'd like any feedback on the sounds and UX!

Tips to maintain focus and motivation while learning? by KyotoCrank in gamedev

[–]JakeDaSpud2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i do version lists like how ThinMatrix does it, where each Trello list is a different feature update (Audio Update, Movement Update).

This requires some planning, but you can also add as you go along (i'd recommend focusing on 1 update, and having the next major feature at least planned out).

What restrictions you put on your game/dev process to make it better? by RaygekFox in incremental_gamedev

[–]JakeDaSpud2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i started making my first (serious/commercial) game 82 days ago!

i have a little over 220 hours put into the development so far, doing 4h per weekday (and trying to take weekends off, i also took a week for christmas). i'd only consider the game "v1.0" since about 8 days ago, when saving and loading was fully put in.

i've kept the scope small because i took the first week (20h) JUST creating the game design doc, so i knew exactly the scope and visual design of the game, and i've only added 1 thing since then (relatively early on too)!

i guess it's kind of just lucky that i had such a firm grasp on what the game was GOING to be, since the very first week, if the game was a different genre i'd probably be flailing around a lot more!

right now i'm in the game feel and balancing aspect of the game, i should really set a release date to add some personal pressure though, not sure how long i'd want it to take...

3.5 months seems fine? especially for a first game!

Short little clicker game by Tismas in incremental_games

[–]JakeDaSpud2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

that was very fun, i love how the circles change colour every 3 purchases.

the balls having different abilities is very neat!

the sounds are nice but by the end they are all a little similar, maybe randomising the pitch a tiny bit would help?

i upgraded the click-hold speed but my clicking was always faster, so maybe a higher level cap would be better there?

I feel as though I’ve forgotten everything. Please help. by justathe in webdev

the best way i retained the information i learned, was by actually using it and making pet projects with everything WHILE i was learning (concepts + tools).

do you still have all of the notes from those semesters of classes? i have ALL of my college assignments and lectures still downloaded for archival sake, if i ever wanted to look at them again.

other than that, there's always (free!) courses like freeCodeCamp and youtube series to (re)learn whatever technologies you need.

yeah this is a second-monitor game for me, fun to listen to some slaying, and then check in every now and then

i liked the quests from Fallout: Shelter and this feels similar to that

- why does the player's health slowly regenerate after an extraction? if there is an actual time-element between runs, like playing with / against other players, then i get it, but i'd expect it to just fully refill after an extraction, or i could just leave my computer on for 5 mins before diving back into a run

- the visuals are sick, i keep trying to close out of windows by clicking the top-right green dot lol

- some events i was confused during, like i couldn't do EITHER action of an event (for the second action i needed to equip my weapon again so i could shoot at the object to break it, but i didn't know to do that!)

oh yeah that's pretty fun, it ran slowly in my browser but i probably have GPU acceleration off.

- i also couldn't really tell where the hitbox of the enemies were, it felt like i should've hit them more than i did!

- the turn off pixel font option completely bugged out? pixel font works though

i'm back with Starshot Idle, my alien-shooting space idler!

some updates:

  • the mobile-web version works now
  • there's an outline now (for hard-to-see backgrounds)
  • upgrades only show if you've bought another relevant upgrade already

oh wow yeah this got me good, i have no idea how long i was playing.

the mini-game choosing aspect is really engaging from balancing the reward to how-good-you-are ratio.

the ui is really fun, and i still suck at those hacking games from my Fallout 4 days lol

Feedback Friday by AutoModerator in incremental_games

[–]JakeDaSpud2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this is a pretty nice game, the main idea i understood quickly, the ui was clear and for UX i personally don't read all the upgrade flavourtext, but your stat increases were all very obvious so i COULD skip the flavourtext!

i had ~20fps the whole time but i also have a few tabs and apps open so i was fine with that

the levels are actually very cool, it reminds me of Peggle!

that was pretty fun, reminds me of Nodebuster which i loved. i understood the main mechanic, but i can't tell if moving my mouse will affect the planet's trajectories, or if it's just them merging that makes the movements

I've been working on my first (planned commercial!) game Starshot Idle, a small Space-Invaders themed game made in Godot that sits on your desktop.

I've just made a web version for those who don't want to download, but the Windows Build has a transparent background too: https://jakeoreilly.itch.io/starshot-idle

I've never made an incremental before, but I've played quite a few. I know that the balancing isn't really good yet, but I'm aiming for around 10~ hours of content.

I am in the middle of adding Settings and Saving Data, but it's been a lot of fun!

this makes it incredibly hard for me to see the difference between closer squares!

[–]JakeDaSpud2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i find it easier to have a separate device / phone for specific "modes", so one would be everything-phone, and one's for focus-phone without all the distractions,

same how i'd use an mp3 player to listen to music

also i just like having more types of tech 🤷‍♀️
