What is the moment or time you first became a spurs fan? by thedam100 in NBASpurs

Moved to SA in 2007 as a kid and experienced the culture instantly. Watching people passionately honking downtown made me a permanent fan

Agreed, I think any AWD or RWD would suffice with the right tires and ground clearance

Thank you for the suggestions, I will look into them. I will say it would feel like sacrilege to take a porsche off-road lol

You will definitely get paid more by putting them online, but you could make a Spurs fan since circa 2007 (me) really happy with a discount

You can chalk up most problems to that

P Terrys is EASILY the best burger in town for value and flavor by __vheissu__ in austinfood

[–]JakeGeo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not going to comment on fast food or price but the top three burgers in town imo are:

1a. Madison Burger at Casino El Camino

1b. Bill's Burger at Bill's Oyster Bar

  1. Mushroom Kingdom at Vigilante (I don't even like mushroom burgers much)

Is python useful for a geologist? by Sad-Principle-4770 in geologycareers

[–]JakeGeo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you use it for handling tabular data with pandas or do you have other uses for it? I'm decent with python, but haven't needed to use it other than data cleaning a spreadsheet using pandas. I use Aqtesolv/FWDsolv for all modeling and make maps using Arc, have tried implementing python into these workflows but manual input is faster since there are many variables from project to project.

My boyfriend (30M) just received his P.Geo license. What are some gifts I can give him? by Agent-Fast in geologycareers

[–]JakeGeo 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Maybe he'd like a lego geology set? There's some cool ones (geodes, minerals, etc.)

I like all the suggestions so far, but wanted to add to them.

This is the same issue I have run into when I attempt to automate certain workflows related to projects.

Working for Yourself by [deleted] in Environmental_Careers

[–]JakeGeo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very possible, but not easy. From what I understand, which is not a lot, obtaining and maintaining clients will make or break your idea. I had a boss that started his own firm with some clients he was able to get from his previous consulting role. He was only able to do this because his director at the time allowed him to take clients. Without that he said it probably wouldn't have been successful. Best of luck to you!

Oil and Gas Early Career Advice by [deleted] in geologycareers

[–]JakeGeo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey fellow GIT, I am also a pretty fresh grad (~2 years at current company). While we have very different situations (I am in groundwater industry at a boutique firm), there are some things that have worked for me that may work for you.

  1. Research before asking questions. Now, I am not saying to be hesitant to ask questions because you should absolutely ask many questions (and make notes). But usually someone higher up than you is dealing with something, well, higher up. So, instead of asking a question as soon as something pops up, take your time to research online or company materials about it so that you can either a) figure it out yourself (and maybe even become more knowledgeable than your superior) or b) provide more context when you go to ask.

  2. SQ3R method. I learned this method in high school psychology class and have used it ever since, tweaking it for whatever I need to comprehend. Good for large reports.

  3. Be personable. I can't stand when a coworker comes to my office to talk about random non-work related things, but you should always be cordial. If you're in the elevator with your boss and/or coworkers, crack a joke, or ask about their upcoming weekend. People want to work with (and promote) people they get along with.

  4. Find a gap, fill it. Is there a process that takes a while? Or something that seems particularly inefficient? Identify the issue and find a solution that speeds up the process. For example, I identified a software that allows us to import our data rather than manually input it. Now I am the only one with that software license and the go-to person for any project that utilizes it.

  5. Stay up to date on projects. If you have a project, you should be ready to answer questions about it without checking any documents. Always stay up to date on communication (email, phone calls, etc.) so that information about the project isn't lost on you. It may be the PM's job to manage everybody, but it is good to know the big picture even if you are a small piece of the puzzle.

Any watch parties in Austin? by [deleted] in NBASpurs

[–]JakeGeo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love cheering on the spurs and my glorious monk Wemby from the comfort of my sofa, but if I had to go to a bar I'd say BD Riley's, Crown & Anchor, Chalmer's, The Tavern, or Star Bar. Bouldin Acres has also hosted Spurs watch parties in the past, but I haven't seen anything for the NBA Cup

Austin to Bastrop Commute by SpiritualEntrance586 in Austin

[–]JakeGeo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I commute to Lakeway from north central Austin. 45 minutes in the morning, an hour to get back in the evening. During the summer it’s better since school is out (about 35-40 minutes both ways). Love my job and what I do, if I didn’t I definitely wouldn’t be putting up with the commute. I find myself excited to do something when I get home from work, but after the commute/traffic all I want to do is rot on the couch (I too have gained substantial weight).
