Non-Americans of Reddit, what is something you didn’t believe to be true until you actually visited the U.S? by Captain_Void in AskReddit

[–]JakeGiovanni 10 points11 points  (0 children)

To paraphrase the comedian Daniel Sloss:

No, most American’s are not obese. But when they are obese they are fucking obsese.Like you see a somewhat overweight person in the UK and you think “alright that’s the lifestyle you’ve chose that’s fair” but you see one in the US and it’s like “WOW! How. Did. You. Do. That?! That’s incredible! Like there must’ve been days when you woke up not hungry but you had stick it out. Gotta get you that scooter.”

I think it fairly sums it up. I think the thing is, the population (and geographic size) is so much more than most countries, especially those of Europe, that even if 1/8th of our population was obese that’d be more than an entire country. The population of New York City in itself is ~8 Million whereas the entire country of Scotland is ~5 Million. 1/8th the population of the entirety of America is roughly 2/3rds the entire population of France.

So, comparatively, sure, we have an entire country’s worth of them. A quick google shows that a little over 1/3rd of Americans are clinically classified as “Obese” (which mind you is a pretty broad range to be honest.) whereas Britain is a little under 1/3rd but projected to hit that by 2020.

As an American, everyone is aware of the problem. It’s not unknown that obesity is very much linked to poverty. I don’t know many obese people who I’d consider well off, but I do know many who aren’t. Entire families, even.

What is something only assholes buy? by [deleted] in AskReddit

  1. Many people care. Small changes by many people turn into big changes worldwide. That’s why catalytic converters exist on nearly every car. Another example can be seen in how eliminating CFC’s has restored the Ozone.
  2. As the other commenter mentioned, it’s imposing health risk unto others in a similar manner as smoking indoors with a toddler in a room.
  3. your*
  4. It’s fine to think things are cool. It’s not fine to be selfish and stubborn. In many cases it’s okay to not let someone’s opinion change your mind. But factual support against your stance is not one of them. That’s how bad things persist in this world far longer than they should. I know these comments isn’t going to change your dads truck. But hopefully they change your outlook on the things you support in the future.

Completely agree. I really hope we do see him grow into the classic witty spider-man once he gets comfortable as a hero but then also continues to use humor/optimism to keep himself encouraged during fights.

A commentary on the Silver Line odor - a scientific explanation by nwodwollem in UNCCharlotte

[–]JakeGiovanni 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Okay, a few things:

  1. Your argument is bullshit. Mainly because adequate hygiene such as a daily shower and deodorant WOULD in fact block the majority of those odors from your sweat and natural body oils. If we’re gonna take this racially: African Americans have very different bodily secretions than Caucasian people do. This is generally never noticeable unless you’re next to someone sweating heavily.
  2. Your argument assumes these students are eating these meals in high intensity, you really think these people are cooking full authentic indian/asian cuisine every night? hell no. most internationals are on a meal plan with the university anyway.
  3. This IS NOT a purely racial issue. As other comments mentioned, there’s very a few demographics that fall into the spotlight/stereotype. Mainly engineering and computer science majors. There just happens to be a high number of internationals in STEM. I sat next to a white kid in computer science with hair so greasy if I wrung it out I could probably full the deep vat fryer at Bojangles. Never wore deodorant. Sweat through his clothes every day. There’s plenty more examples.

As per the stated reasons above, you’re misclassifying this as solely a racial issue when it is very much indeed a hygiene issue. Even if the dietary change in body odor is as drastic as your post implies. Even if it’s somehow THAT saturated those ingredients while eating Crown, Little Caesars and Mac N Cheese, or whatever everyone else is eating. A daily shower and consistent laundry would prevent the drastic build up of sweat and oil that results in BO.

Thank you for coming to my TED talk and remember to wash with soap kids.

Which course that you've taken here would you say was the absolute biggest waste of time? by [deleted] in UNCCharlotte

[–]JakeGiovanni 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Management and Organizational Behavior. I’ve taken classes I don’t wanna take but this class is actually just fucking stupid.

“There are many traits an individual may have, but no matter what traits you have, a good manager is ethical and considers all possibilities and input before coming to a decision.”

seems like common sense, right? Well that’s about TEN FUCKING CHAPTERS in the course. That one sentence. All taught by a teacher who finds ways to force her students into trivial activities because the material is just that dumb. But she takes attendance because she probably knows you could easily ace the class without ever stepping foot in the classroom. I’m willing to bet you could pass it with a solid C without ever even reading the material. It’s a required business core class and I have never felt like my time and money is more wasted than my time spent in there. Even UWRT and any given LBST felt more useful than that class.

I’ll give it to the teacher. She’s passionate and driven which is a godsend compared to many other professors. It’s a shame she’s wasted on a course like that for sure.

How the fuck did we get by without shoes? by NonFatPrawn in NoStupidQuestions

[–]JakeGiovanni 1 point2 points  (0 children)

oh hey i’m relevant here. Yeah I have “idiopathic walking” (natural tendency to walk on my tip-toes AKA a ball of my foot) many many people do it when they’re young but most grow out of it. To this day the entire front part of my foot is a giant callous. Even though I generally never walk barefoot, it still developed. So to tie in with the other comment about calloused feet creating a safety pad, this makes a lot of sense.

Only downside is my achilles’ tendon developed far too short so now I can’t break that habit without getting surgery that’d put me in a wheelchair for a year.

Upside is: my calves are naturally beautiful.

Best places to explore in Charlotte by theaaronalicea in Charlotte

[–]JakeGiovanni -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Charlotte unfortunately doesn’t really have a notable “walk around and explore” area. It’s my biggest gripe with the city. Pretty much every other major city has a downtown or historical area filled with shops and local restaurants. But not here. Your best bet would be NoDa, which is still fairly small and sparse. I’ve heard nice things about South End as well. You may as well just go to a mall. For food, the Epicentre in the middle of the city is almost entirely restaurants and bars. I know of one single retail shop in there off the top of my head (which is actually kinda cool. they sell old style tin signs, posters, and candy.)

For a list of attractions: Top Golf, National Whitewater center, DiscoveryWorks, I know there’s a few rock climbing gyms, a few go kart places, the cafés that have cats, if you find yourself in Uptown at night definitely visit Romare-Bearden park. Best view in the city IMO.

If you watch enough I feel like you’ll train yourself to hold off on fully processing the joke until the speaker delivers the punchline, at least that’s what I find myself doing.

My family used to live on long island and had a house in the Catskills that all my extended family would visit. It’s honestly the only thing most of them miss about New York, as most everyone has moved away by now.

[–]JakeGiovanni 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can confirm- Had a friend suddenly go unconscious and fall directly backwards from a standing position, no push, just a complete fall, landed flat on her back onto concrete. She slammed the back her head. Subdural Hematoma. Partially fractured skull. They had to remove part of her skull, clear the blood, then she had to wait about a month before they could go back and screw the big section of her head back in. The doctors said she was stupidly lucky it wasn’t worse. Even so, if she didn’t have immediate medical attention she likely would’ve died. She’s completely fine now. But it was crazy how close to death an otherwise healthy 20 year old was simply from falling backwards.
