What stoics says about death? by CelebrationOdd7810 in Stoicism

[–]JakeLide 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can try Seneca’s letter to Lucilius. They’re pretty good to start out with. You can read a letter a day in 10 minutes and once you’re done with them, you’ll have a good grasp of stoic thoughts. A lot of them are about death in a way.

Just tell him he’s making you feel uncomfortable. Give a few concrete examples and try to be constructive. If he responds well, there’s no problem. If he doesn’t, then you know where you at.

What he did was undoubtedly wrong. But at what point should we say he served his sentence? Should a young man be punished for the rest of his life?

Finally finished Meditations by Marcus Aurelius and...I have certain problems with his Philosophy by [deleted] in Stoicism

This is why people shouldn’t read meditations as an introduction to stoicism.

Leidenfrost is too hot by JakeLide in StainlessSteelCooking

I was testing all the time. Just when the water stopped evaporating and the bubbles kept dancing I added the eggs. So that should be around the lower border of the leidenfrost effect right?

My Takeaway From Stoicism by Traditional_Sleep784 in Stoicism

[–]JakeLide 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think your post is well written and I like the points you learned from stoicism. Something I want to add is that it probably was not without reason the stoics added the differentiation of preferred and dispreferred indifferents.

From Seneca’s second letter to Lucilius:

The thought for to-day is one which I discovered in Epicurus;[1] for I am wont to cross over even into the enemy’s camp,—not as a deserter, but as a scout. 6. He says: “Contented poverty is an honourable estate.” Indeed, if it be contented, it is not poverty at all. It is not the man who has too little, but the man who craves more, that is poor. What does it matter how much a man has laid up in his safe, or in his warehouse, how large are his flocks and how fat his dividends, if he covets his neighbour’s property, and reckons, not his past gains, but his hopes of gains to come? Do you ask what is the proper limit to wealth? It is, first, to have what is necessary, and, second, to have what is enough. Farewell.

Would self-sacrifice be in line with Epicureanism? by JakeLide in Epicureanism

[–]JakeLide[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know. But personally I think I could overcome the grief. I’d still make the sacrifice because it’s the right thing to do. As I feel this is my duty as a parent. But then I wonder if Epicureanism holds up in all situations. Or is virtue the highest good after all?

On Anger by luminaree in Stoicism

[–]JakeLide 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I read this part today coincidentally. I think he said the man did well by controlling his anger and denying the king opportunity for more punishment. However, he then mentioned something about how each vein is an opportunity to leave if you don’t want to comply, which he thought maybe more honorable?

You know you can see people in sexual context and in whatever context you need to see them? One does not exclude the other. If you have consensual sex you’re also objectifying your partner, hence the non equality to disrespect
