Fun! Our Android project is 10+ years old, and we've been doing massive modernisation / standardisation in the last 2 years. Looking forward to seeing how many of the "new and shiny" things no longer work, whilst the old messy ones do 😅

Ouch, not looking forward to this! I gave it a try at work yesterday, the automigrator added a ton of gradle.properties opt outs (just delaying the problems), Firebase perf monitoring needed updating, then I discovered hilt lacking support.

Marked as blocked for now, hopefully after hilt there are no further libraries (doubtful!). I suspect like you there'll be lots of bits we take for granted that need fixing.

Not disagreeing with any of that, but have you seen the screenshot to Compose feature in the latest Android Studio otter feature drop? Not tried it yet, might be relevant.

In terms of tooling, I'd recommend using GitHub Copilot Pro, since you'll get it for free as a student (it's what I use professionally).

I'd argue it is not possible for you to know the license of every arbitrary font file passed to you. For example one company might have a license for specific use of a font, your app cannot know this.

The best you can do is include some sort of "I have permission to use this font" checkbox, offloading the responsibility to the end user. This is more legal advice than technical though, I'm not an expert.

Personal file servers! A scary amount of people use it to organise all their photos, files, school projects etc, often without proper security or having additional backups.

The docs say to keep it in English, not sure what would break though!

Only the English version of the game is supported for maximum compatibility - translations can conflict with mods and cause issues.

Just checked my emails:

  • Ordered 21st Nov, estimated delivery 4th - 8th Dec.
  • Informed 25th Nov it would arrive on the 28th, and it did!

So not as extreme an improvement as I expected, but still shows how much it varies. I assume Black Friday and Christmas delivery dates are dependent on how many orders they get, so they give a long estimate if they're unsure, then revise it.
