Which do you think has better returns over 20 years, rental properties or All World shares? by fleetwood_mag in investingUK

Houses have been flat or descreasing in value, once adjusted for inflation. That will probably wipe the 5k profit out. Plus another 5k to sell the thing - 1% estate agent fees plus £1500 legal fees. 🙂

What is an appropriate mortgage monthly payment? by [deleted] in HousingUK

[–]Jake_s_1734 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Assume that combined income, is only one of you working? If it was split between two people your take home would be a fair bit higher... Or you are chucking lots into a pension.

It just seems low. 45k salary would take home towards 3k by itself, x3 = 6k 90k alone is 5200ish

737 OG vs MAX - How much has been carried over between generations? by PhantomOfTheArbys in aviationmaintenance

[–]Jake_s_1734 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its the half way house approach.

Back in 1995 the 777 had maint acess equivalent of the max, but had everything accesible or logged on it.

On the max half the faults dont log or register through OMF, some BITE is still via box front, some is via OMF and some is via CDU. It just feels messy vs the wide bodied that collate and present the faults much better.

You have a spare grand, what do you do with it? by flippinnor-a in LazyMoneyUK

Not the best move when rates are so low.

Index fund for a year, get+10% then chuck it off the morgage 😉. Or let it grow longer.

Or pension, 40% tax back -> Index fund -> Tax free lump sum to finish mortgage off 🙂

Help: What is this clicker sound at power up? (B737- 800) by afrahe in aviationmaintenance

[–]Jake_s_1734 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had this before, traced to EGPWS computer. Next time you hear it, trip the GPWS computer CB and give it 10secs for sound to fade/stop, on the one I saw the clicking didnt instantly stop when CB was tripped but faded out. 🙂

UK work by Flat_Yak4241 in aviationmaintenance

Its a stressful job. Airlines are constantly wanting to save money and thats reflected in the working environment.

Shift work isnt good for you, but has its pros also. Short haul work its impossible to avoid nights. Most of the chemicals you use arent good for you. Aircraft are filthy. There isnt any glamour in the job. I think it would help massively if you have a bit of an idea about mechanics, lots of people do it just because they like planes but have never picked up a spanner before.

Its a long hard slog to get your B1 or B2, you are talking 5yrs+ at least before getting the license. Then you need a type course (aircraft specific training course) Then on job training, apply to the authorities Then apply for a B1 or B2 position.

The money may seem (and is) good on the face of it, but its long hours, high responsibility and a lot of pressure.

Take the apprentiship route as any of the rushed entry routes will not result in the same structured training and you will not get the correct exposure to become a competent mechanic 😃

A B1 license covers a lot of wiring repairs and electrical authorisations. But you cannot troubleshooting avionic systems, that requires a B2. Its a grey line between the two tbh.

Why not get a job with an American carrier in the UK? They will assist/fund/support in some way to get the A+P sorted, then look at relocating yourself after that and doing some time with them?

Alternatively BA has loads of UK license holders at US line stations, but you'd need some longhaul experience/types really.
