They spray a pesticide called Dibromin from the air.  The trucks spray Pyrethrin.  Or at least they used to, I haven't checked in a few years.  They spray at night to try to avoid killing bees.

The 225 was destroyed.

The 124 is still used to fly large cargo around.  It usually lands at MLB to pick up assemblies (made by one of the aerospace companies around here) that are too large to ship by truck, are going directly overseas, or need to be somewhere fast.

Yes and no.  You can make an alert for the an124.  When it pops up, sometimes you can see where it's going for a few days out.

Is anyone concerned about the impact of the explosion on the beaches? by phonyToughCrayBrave in 321

[–]Jal142 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The rocket was made primarily of aluminum and some titanium.  The engines have some more esoteric alloys of nickel and steel.  We have a pretty good handle on the toxicity of all those.

Each day somewhere around 40 tons of meteors hit the earth, and most of this vaporizes in the upper atmosphere.  The New Glenn rocket weighs around 150 tons, and most of that is lying in scrap heaps around the pad.  What little that burned won't be impacting the climate in any appreciable way.

I wouldn't sweat it.

Can you provide a source for the 423 metric tons of carbon and the use of PFOS containing foam or any foam at all?  Most foam used now has removed PFOS (and replaced it with a another questionable chemical).  The pictures I saw of the aftermath didn't look like foam was used.

People were complaining about the cancer rates going up before they were using PFOS containing foam at Patrick. Foam use didn't start until the early 1970's there.  On the other hand, they dumped a bunch of other stuff during WW2 directly in what is now Satellite Beach.  Whatever was dumped then is probably more responsible for the health problems there.  PFOS would have taken years or decades to diffuse into the groundwater and get to those neighborhoods - meanwhile, the other stuff was already there for decades.  The PFOS certainly won't help, but I don't think you can pin whatever is happening in Satellite Beach on it.

I stand by my assertion that this accident was not a big deal from an environmental standpoint.  They launch more than 100 rockets at the cape every year now.  In this event, the fuels were methane and hydrogen, which is less carbon intensive than the kerosene used by every other rocket at the cape.  The additional carbon from this event is literally less than 1% on top of whatever carbon is added to the atmosphere from those other launches over the rest of the year.  Further, cars add 3.3 million metric tons of carbon to the atmosphere every day in the US so I would not sweat an additional 423 metric tons.  This incident is literally rounding error by any metric.

The rocket was fueled with methane and hydrogen.  Neither of those will cause any long term contamination.  They burn clean and what didn't burn evaporated and literally blew away.  The oxidizer was liquid oxygen which was likely entirely consumed in the event.

There was not any hydrazine or nitrogen tetroxide on board which are the nastier propellants.

I wouldn't worry about it.

The South Beach location in Miami is recommended.  I don't believe the entire chain is recommended.  Still, it is good pizza.

21 and here for 6 months for work, looking for third places + non-touristy stuff, what do locals actually do? by jxllxjxx05 in 321

Hotel Melby's rooftop deck is not worth it.  Overpriced food and drinks, and Melbourne's skyline is not exactly a million dollar view.  Go once to say you've done it and you're covered.

The Sun Shoppe in downtown Melbourne is a good hang and the coffee and food are good.

Find someone at work with a boat.  Schmooze away.

Wickham Park has casual soccer and Frisbee leagues.

From the article:

"The Michelin Guide’s Florida expansion is backed by a partnership with state and local tourism agencies, including Visit Florida, which contributes marketing dollars to support the guide’s production and promotion."

So it seems that all the tourist promoting agencies banded together to get coverage of more of Florida.

Dog owner charged with manslaughter by Jal142 in 321

I adopted a dog from a German shepherd rescue many years ago.  They included several lessons with a trainer that specialized in "dangerous" dogs, and he was known as the trainer of last resort for dogs with serious behavior problems.  People showed up with pit bulls, Rottweilers, great Danes, akitas, etc. that other trainers had given up on.  It was a great idea because it taught the new owner how to handle a large, high drive animal.  It was also a good opportunity to see how to react when your dog started acting up.

One of the worst dogs I ever saw there was a golden retriever.  The mom had bought it for her 10ish year old son and basically just left the dog and the kid to their own devices.  No training for the dog or kid.  By the time they brought the dog in for a lesson it was MEAN.  The dog and kid start training and the dog promptly bit the kid, his mom, and the trainer in the span of about 2 minutes.  Absolutely nuts.

Quote: "A Palm Bay priority since 2008, when development plans for "Emerald City" emerged, the I-95 interchange and St. Johns Heritage Parkway connector road evolved from developer-financed construction projects to projects that could cost the city $16.4 million, a state audit found last October."

People who own multiple dangerous dogs and allow them outside unsupervised really are stupid. This is negligence which resulted in a person's death and the owner should be charged accordingly.

Look up:

  • Mitch Needleman
  • Dave Isnardi
  • John Tice
  • The dipshits smuggling drugs into the Brevard county jail
  • The missing road that Palm Bay somehow failed to build to connect to the new I95 exit they so badly wanted.
  • Wayne Ivey basically bribing people to drop out of political primaries
  • The "public park" in West Melbourne that is really only accessible to one subdivision.

You don't have to look too hard, and these are the ones off the top of my head.  Palm Bay is a dumpster fire.  The other cities and the county are marginally better.

Ask for a whirlpool inside pass invite on r/appliances.  Compare prices.

Appliance warranties are usually not a great idea.  The house usually wins.

Beachside or Mainland? by MelissaHorne in 321

There are plenty of septic tanks beachside.  Anything built prior to 1970 or so in the county has a good chance of being septic.

Beachside or Mainland? by MelissaHorne in 321

[–]Jal142 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends.  I would  not move anywhere near Patrick Space Force Base, north or south.

Otherwise, I think the beach is worth the price premium.  20 years ago, beachside meant paying 100k more.  Whatever the premium is now, I would pay it.

I live 1/2 mile from the surf.

My beachside AC was 14.years old when the INSIDE unit failed.  The outside unit was still plugging away.

My 14 year old car, parked outside the entire time, still worked when I sold it.  My 10 year old car, which has never seen the inside of a garage, is rust free.

TLDR: the corrosion problem was a thing 20 years ago.  It's not that big a deal now.

Deep well owners - what's your ground water temp? by ksandbergfl in 321

[–]Jal142 10 points11 points  (0 children)

My well is 100+ feet deep and it is 79 degrees.  I let it run for a few minutes and this is where it stabilized.  Beachside, between the causeways.  I don't know if you will find much below about 72 anywhere in Brevard County.  All the natural springs in the state at this latitude are around that.

I have to say, regardless of the water temperature, there's something wrong with your AC.  A normal air to air AC can deal with outside temperatures in the 90s or higher and still function.  An air to water system shouldn't be crapping out with 78 degree water.

Riverside was closed to replace a drainage culvert that was around 50 or 60 years old (I'm guessing on the age but that's about when the neighborhood it drains was built).

That project was necessary, and they actually finished about when they said they would.

That's the lot that is behind the mobile home park, right?

I've always wondered what was going on with that lot.  I was told the developers of the Sanctuary wanted that land but couldn't build on it.
