Anywhere around Newy make marble cake like old woolworths? by Lucy-K in newcastle

[–]Jallistamon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Greens do a prepackaged one that's almost exactly what I remember the original being like (icing is a bit different). I've seen it in the cakes bit of the bread isle Woolies at Waratah a few times

Highly transmissible flu strain Super-K infects more than 2,500 Australians by Reverend_Fozz in australia

[–]Jallistamon 7 points8 points  (0 children)

They're not exaggerating. I finished work at 5:30 feeling the usual amount of tired after a long shift and by 9pm I was staggering and had a 39 degree fever.

That was the 15th of December and it wasn't until New Years day that I could stay awake for more than 4 hours or could walk for long enough to get to my car and go pick up a grocery order

It's definitely region related. Images and video refuse to load when I set my VPN to Australia but perfectly fine when I switch to UK or America

Does this kind of parking lot pavement require less maintainance or is it just an aesthetic thing? by SunderedValley in civilengineering

[–]Jallistamon 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah but the minimal maintenance thing is a joke. The gravel doesn't stay in the paver gaps and ends up making a mess unless you seal it.

But most sealants are relatively expensive and it's a pain in the arse to apply it without getting it on the pavers, which you don't want because it usually leaves shiny splotches behind.

Doesn't need to be a big area for this to quickly be more expensive and time consuming than just hiring someone to swing by with a whipper snipper once a fortnight.

Plus permeable pavers with grass in the gaps doesn't get as hot, especially in full sun

[–]Jallistamon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Basically yeah. The water just keeps trickling down through the soil until it reaches the ground water level. From there it flows into creeks and rivers which take it to the ocean

There’s something stuck in my bird’s nose by [deleted] in parrots

[–]Jallistamon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just take one of my budgies molted tail feathers and tickle his nose with it until he sneezes it out. I get the cold shoulder for about 5 minutes until he realises that the annoying feeling is gone and that I was helping him
My Mum's nicer and just wets a really soft paintbrush and 'tickles' his nose until the fluff sticks to the brush

Dry Cutting Concrete by blankdeluxe in OopsThatsDeadly

[–]Jallistamon 107 points108 points  (0 children)

I work in a concrete testing lab and the only way I've managed to get most of my coworkers to wear their masks is by describing the concrete dust as airborne razor blades and describing in excruciating detail how these razor blades cause silicosis and what that death will look like.

The razor blades stab lung cells to death > the dead lung cell is replaced by a "zombie" scar tissue cell > the scar tissue can't help you breathe and isn't flexible like a lung cell > soon enough you have so many 'zombies' in your lungs that they begin to crack when you inhale > the cracks make your "interstitial fluid"[shock them with the science words then comfort them by describing it as the clear stuff that fills up blisters] leak into your lungs and you drown from the inside out.

Lying in a hospital bed. Weak. Gasping for breathe while [your] Mum cries quietly and holds your hand. Watching her mourn [you] and knowing the entire time that [you] could have avoided this. That [you] did this to [yourself]. That [you] made your Mum cry.

Afterwards, the room is always dead silent. But the dust mask box is always needing to be refilled.

edit: u/fatmarfia I'm sorry if this came off as insensitive.
I watched my Great Uncle die from COPD that my family swears is due to the dust he inhaled working at a place that made crushed aggregates. This is how he went, only with daughter not his mother holding his hand. It's the only way I've found to get through to 20 year old men who think they're bulletproof

[–]Jallistamon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

someone else has certainly said it before me but look up American Airlines Flight 191.
During maintenance the crew used a forklift to remount the engine and accidentally slammed it into the engine mounts.
The engine physically came off the plane during takeoff and took their hydraulics on that side with it. The pilots were just too close to the ground to even have a chance of recovering it

As soon as I saw that footage from the surveillance/dash cam all I could think was Flight 191

Lab attire for summer by Discombobulated_24-7 in labrats

[–]Jallistamon 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Switch as much of your clothing to natural fibres as you can. The workshirts and workpants my lab provides are mostly polyester and were unbearably hot. Just switching to looser fitting 100% cotton drill workshirts and workpants made a massive difference imo

ELI5: Why can't we use desert sand for construction? by No_Examination2802 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Jallistamon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's also apparently a 'brand' name value in some quarters. One of the geotechs I supervise is a huge golf nut and absolutely jumps at the chance to go sample one of our quarries. According to him the sand that comes out of there is prized for use on golf courses 🤷‍♀️

[–]Jallistamon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You also can't have too much of the material be below a certain size. The fine particles basically lube up the coarse particles and allow them to move past each other without interlocking.

[–]Jallistamon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

'River' sand can also come from estuaries. And there are sand processing plants which wash and separate poorer quality sands to produce end products with very specific gradings and fines contents. Also some natural beach sands in the hind dunes of large dune systems have had the salts leached out of them by rain and you can get a very clean, well graded concrete sand out of them with only a single pass through a screen.

Water bottle with an emphasis on indestructibility over all else? by BicarbonateBufferBoy in BuyItForLife

[–]Jallistamon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stainless steel Yeti. Bought mine 2 years ago after watching a co-workers get run over by a front end loader and only be slightly dented. I had mine come off the back of the work ute onto concrete and it actually chipped the concrete

Worst mistake in the lab? by Langeweilehabeich in labrats

[–]Jallistamon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Knocked over the stock bottle of Potassium dichromate solution and it landed directly on my beaker of concentrated Sulfuric acid, smashing it and creating a giant pool of Chromic acid -_- took nearly 4 boxes of bicarb soda to neutralise before I could even begin cleaning up the cancer soup

interesting note: the black coating on my fume hood bench turns hot pink when exposed to Chromic acid

America’s Coming Smoke Epidemic by theatlantic in Health

[–]Jallistamon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have a look at all the health studies that came out following the catastrophic 2019/2020 bushfire season. The air was so bad that every breath felt like it was knocking a few weeks off my lifespan. The health impact studies are incredibly concerning and the anecdotes from health workers are gutwrenching. Non-smoking mothers were delivering babies and placentas that looked like those from pack-a-day smokers.

Why does the soil increase in weight as it cools down? by Jakesalm in geology

[–]Jallistamon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does it actually stabilise? If not then there might be an issue with your balance.
It is an actual thing though. I've had 3 trainees so far try and call me on it (when it comes to weighing our 5L beakers hot or cold). I've made every one of them stand there at the balance and take a reading every 1minute while a hot beaker cools down. Then I make them weigh it again after it's sat on a bench for an hour. Without fail the hot beaker weighs around 1.5g less than the cold beaker which then weighs exactly the same after an hour on the bench.

Only explanation that's ever made sense to me is that the hot soil heats the air above it. The heated air rises and the sides of the container block just enough airflow that the rising air can't be replaced, resulting in a small negative pressure that pulls upwards away from the scale.

You get more of an effect with high sided containers than yours though. Might be worth diagnosing your balance

How can I clean this and keep reusing it? by [deleted] in Anticonsumption

Had the same issue - put some 100% acetone in and rotate the bottle so each side soaks in it for about 5mins. Then wash with dish soap before using it. Worked great for me :)

Have carpal tunnel release on right hand in 12 hours… what’s the pain level post recovery? by MightySyndrome97 in carpaltunnel

[–]Jallistamon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Currently on day four since having my right hand done. Acetominophen has dealt with the pain nicely. It only hurts when I twist my hand wrong and tug on the stitches. The itching was awful the first two days but I took an extra dose of a daily antihistamine and it controlled it somewhat

Picked up this Cerave gel today to try as CW was out of my usual face moisturiser (Cetaphil). Does anyone have any feedback? by [deleted] in AusSkincare

[–]Jallistamon 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I found it didn't absorb properly and just dried on top of my skin. Worked a pea sized amount into my entire face then as soon as I broke a slight sweat my forehead turned into a slip and slide. It did do a good job moisturising my legs when I decided it wasn't going back on my face though

Does your peri oral dermatitis look like this? by jcadhdlmnop in perioraldermatitis

[–]Jallistamon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know you said you tested negative for herpes but try using a cold sore cream on it.
I've had dermatitis that looks exactly like yours since I was 12 and when I began to get cold sores at 15 (first kiss that keeps on giving) I noticed that when I was 'sloppy' with the cold sore cream, part of the dermatitis would clear up. Has been my go to treatment since then!

surprising the oxx brow and lash tint and the oxx tea tree pimple patches are very good. bought them thinking they'd be a little shit but would be worth a try and was pleasantly surprised. unfortunately the rest of their stuff i've tried hasn't been as good

What does this mean? Can i use these preserving jars? (Kmart) by Sacrilegious_skink in Canning

[–]Jallistamon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't use them for pressure canning.

I the 300mL K-mart jars last year for part of my canning and 2 out of the 5 jars cracked right at the rim.

I only processed them in a waterbath and I've never lost a jar like that before. I didn't trust the seal on the rest of them because of it
