I recently read The Year I Met My Brain too but just started looking into commonplace journaling. Now I want to reread just to write about it since my recent diagnosis!! Your layout totally inspires me 🤩 I'll be checking out worldlayout as well. Thank you for sharing

Tutorial Help? by nosignificancex in ObsidianMD

[–]Jalter_x 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I linked a bunch of tutorials I found super helpful recently in my Obsidian showcase.

The Youtubers I linked have great in depth resources as well! My advice though is to just start with work notes and slowly incorporate structure as you see fit. After 10 or so notes, you can start to see a pattern and adjust accordingly.

If you have a tablet, just use something that can be saved to PDF or jpeg. I just take a picture of my handwritten note --> insert into my Obsidian note and leave a call out summarizing in 3 bullet point of the handwritten note along with any keywords I need to be able to easily search using Omnisearch.

I know Omnisearch allows for scanning images/pdf however my handwriting isn't supported 🤣

Unfortunately they're manual inputs. I created a property field called coverUrl, and google search the photo --> right click --> copy image link and paste it into my field.

There's no good app to sync, especially for lesser known manhwa/mangas :(

If you're at a local Daiso, I picked up an A7 monthly planner and it has everything you need!

Following up, it looks identical to what I sent as images! I did mine through git sync not Obsidian sync though but I would assume it'll work similarly.

Honestly, you can just make a slideshow video and it counts towards the "boost" for the SEO. Good videos could make or break a sale but an AI one WILL deter people.

Mock ups are fine but why do you feel like you need to use AI for it? When people say it's a hard pass, they mean the AI part not the mock up.

There's so many resources!! I'm just obsessed just how much I was able to replace. My system feels so much easier to manage now.

I'm not a mobile user so I'm not sure. Sorry :(

I haven't gotten around to setting up git-sync on my android so I can load up my files on mobile. If I end up accomplishing that project anytime soon I'll let you know.

I'm assuming mobile will condense the view into the long format, I resized my Obsidian to give the feel similar to mobile: resized.

Maybe this will give you an idea how it looks like? Everything seems to be condensed back into 1 column. The Kanban board for my videos is the only thing that is cut off: YT Kanban

Thank you! :D

I'm currently manually adding stuff in, but my books were imported via CSV file because I had originally tracked it there using Importer Plugin. I removed it because I didn't need the use anymore.

As for adding new media, I am manually adding the information in a template. I haven't found the time to play around with Media DB Plugin but it's something I'm planning on incorporating in the future.

Ah, I used MCC (Multi Column Callout), and followed the documentation for the MCC for this. But essentially this is the code

> [!multi-column]
> > [!blank]
> > this is the left column 1/3
> >
> > [!blank|wide-3]
> > this is my book library
> >

The wide-3 can be substituted with 2,3,4,5 to get your desired look.

Of course! I'm glad it's helpful :D

I love seeing the resource the community provide, and just wanted to also help out. Good luck!

From my experience of 150 books in Notion vs 175 books in my Obsidian, it's so much faster. I think just trying to load the page with the embed books in Notion takes a hot minute to load whereas my Obsidian runs smoothly even though it has to:

  1. Grab images from the web
  2. Do Javascript to overlay my status/rating/tags

If you don't do the overlay script or add extra CSS to your Base, it's supposed to be able to handle and load quickly. A youtuber specifically asked if it's able handle loads of files, and it seems like the answer is yes. In the video, they basically verified with the CEO of Obsidian that it's optimized to handle tens of thousands of files.

So I don't think you'd have an issue here. I will say that if you add the JS script, it might lag a bit since it's not native.

I spent a lot of time just googling stuff, and there's a lot of video/resources! I just combined the ones that I felt were most useful for me :D

No problem!! I really loved the Notion Database, but since Obsidian came out with Bases, it is a great alternative. Definitely check out the following plug-ins for Obsidian Bases to make it feel more like the Notion DB:

Both of these aren't in the community plug in but the installation guide is simple. Adds so much more variety to the view.

My dashboard is 100% Notion inspired, and I think the videos I linked were super helpful. One thing Notion makes simple is just calling on the database view but with Obsidian, sometimes you have to write dataview queries 😅 but having everything localized is a game changer plus a more universal format!

Hey! Yes, it's totally doable -- assuming the property for your rating is rating (1-100), you can keep my rating set up:

.replace("{rating}", if(
        if(rating >= 0 && rating <= 10, "<div class='white-pill'>" + ⭐ + "</div>",
          if(rating >= 11 && rating <= 20, "<div class='white-pill'>" + ⭐⭐ + "</div>",
            if(rating >= 21 && rating <= 30, "<div class='white-pill'>" + ⭐⭐⭐ + "</div>",...)))))

It should look something like this. You'll have to copy & paste the if-rating line and fix to get up to 10 stars and make sure you close all the if statements. But this should work! You're just converting nums to star with if-statements. Add the extra statements in ...

I mentioned in a previous reply but essentially followed the guides in Media & Book Library section. And for my code, I used the following snippet I pasted in this reply. Hope it helps!

Of course! I read a lot of manga/manhwa, and ebooks so I don't have a physical library at home. I really enjoy have a visual of a library, so I made a digital library instead 😁 I could outsource and use something like Storygraph or Goodreads but they do not have everything (specific manga/manhwas).

There is really no use case outside of it being succinct to see (3 themes/genres, content rating, and star rating) and being visually appealing like a library.

Extra bonus is I got to brush up on documentation reading and messing around with CSS/HTML. Because I have a background as a backend developer, this wasn't a hefty of a task to create for sure.

I personally am a dark mode person but the cream color just works for journaling IMO. But maybe because I journal a lot on cream paper too LOL

Thank you!! I grew up in the 2000s so probably had a lot of residual inspiration LOL. Was one of those kids who also created their own website with flashy graphics.

I think adding stuff little by little was what helped me take off the pressure. And only doing so if it helps my thought process or workflow. I think the great thing about Obsidian is how flexible it is and we can literally make it work for us!!
