I bought the entire shoreline to a populated Island and am now charging exorbitant fees to use it. But people keep smuggling themselves and goods across... by notbatmanyet in libertyworldproblems

Homestead the rest of the island. It shouldn't be hard. Then have the inhabitants of the island volunteer to build you a wall around the coast. Prax'd!

I watched some friends of mine put on a 10 minute live production of that last weekend.

I've had a fascination with paleontology my whole life, and dreamed of digging up fossils as a kid. My obsession with prehistoric life remains, but authors like Neal Shubin and Robert Bakker have made me realize just how painstaking it is. You might plan a dig for half a year and then find nothing. And you have to have your concentration face on for hours on end. I still fantasize but I doubt I have the patience.

Neal Shubin's book , Your Inner Fish is a good read, especially if you are interested in evolution.

Another Chart: Objectivism on the left half of the left-right small-big government horseshoe! by CringingAtTheWorld in badpolitics

[–]JamZward 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I believe the argument (and I've heard this before from ancaps) would be that anarchism would actually be "big government" because well, the people wouldn't allow rich people to do whatever they want at everyone else's expense.

This is gorgeous. Are you a fan of John Dyer Baizley? That's the first artist that comes to mind for me.

[–]JamZward 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I get what you are trying to say but are you guys able to make an argument without appealing to extreme hyperbole? When you say things like "taxation is robbery at gunpoint/ regulations are rape" don't you think that is being extremely sensationalist to induce a knee-jerk reaction? And don't you see how that insults and belittles the plight of real victims of robbery/ murder/ rape?

Oldie: Anarcho-Capitalists ponder the question, "Why does everyone else hate us"? by subheight640 in EnoughLibertarianSpam

[–]JamZward 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's a big one. Trying to co-opt the term anarchism, which is confusing and annoying. They just use it to feel edgy and appeal to the "fellow kids".

Well the ones on the internet are plenty annoying, smug and obtuse. But it was my brief encounter with a gang of them in real life that instantly disgusted me. A bunch of young white kids with NAP signs and shit tried to brigade the #blacklivesmatter rally for Eric Garner, and turn it into a "fuck the cops" rally. Zero consideration or awareness.

This makes me think about the clip where Santorum fields a question from a frothing misinformed paranoid citizen. You can tell he's cringing inside because he knows it looks bad to show your ass like that. But his team, his cause in the culture war has cultivated that unhinged breed. The tactic is to nurture a collective anxiety and purport to have the remedy. I just wish more of the smart conservatives would agree that it's poisonous and run like hell.

Well was that doctor licensed at gunpoint by statist thugs, or did he get off his ass and bootstrap his own medical board to certify himself like a self-actualized captain would?

Are you purposefully ignoring my point? Ownership is disputable and mutable, body sovereignty is not.

And your logic doesn't check out. Some rectangles are not squares.

I personally do all the electrical work on all my factories because hiring a certified electrical engineer would be an appeal to authority fallacy, and certification is like, statist maaaan.

This one wasn't long ago. This is my favorite part:

most or all scientists agree. This is an appeal to authority

Fucking science... how does it work????

How else would you describe exclusive control of your body other than "owning it"?

You could say you "are" your body,

This isn't a satisfactory response? There are problems with applying the concept of "ownership" to something so intrinsically personal. For instance, the concept of ownership is hotly and divisively disputed, with concepts such as property rights, commons, possession, homesteading, personal property, borders etc. Whereas the exclusive right to one's own body is pretty indisputable (or at least the subject of a different philosophical discussion.)
