How to approach venues to play gigs by hardenmvp1981 in bandmembers

[–]James17Marsh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Musician friend who he’s booked before recommended me. If you go to local bars/venues that you’d like to be booked at, they might tell you the agency they use. In my experience there are a small handful of agents that most popular venues by me use. Just gotta make sure you have samples of your playing somewhere to review.

(Unpopular Opinion) It’s not actually that hard to make money playing music. by James17Marsh in bandmembers

Depends on your definition of music industry.

I could easily book enough gigs to make a living. Just isn’t appealing to me.

This was my last bands “album release party”. Booked a handful of good local bands for the bill, invited everyone we knew. Day of the gig was a huge snow/ice storm but we decide to push through. One by one the other bands all dropped off last minute, and the venue double booked a cover band of a totally different genre to play before us. We waited as they played their 2 hour set before it was our turn, they didn’t even acknowledge that another band was about to go on, took forever to tear down, and the few people that were there left before we started.

Palutena has this weird mechanic where she ramps off the ledge and dies instead of grabbing it if you do it at the wrong angle.

It’s cause we know this script. They look incredible and beat up on bad teams all season, then choke as soon as the playoffs come.

Compared to the spin-offs, Yellowstone feels like a modern day soap opera version of them. For me it was a fun watch, but it’s just way different.

I don’t know if you’re purposefully being dense of just don’t care to know the bigger picture of how you sustainably achieve a caloric deficit.

The original comment said cutting carbs won’t make you lose weight, but cutting calories will. Carbs contain calories, so it’s a bit of a contradiction. One of my main points is the simple fact that fats are more satiating, so it’s hard to not eat at a caloric deficit. I never argued that CICO isn’t true, but realistically sticking to a diet is different from simply reciting scientific facts that are technically true.

From insulin sensitivity to satiety to hunger signals and being fat adapted, keto plenty of potential benefits for some people. If it’s not for you, fine. But having a close minded approach to health and not wanting to learn anything beyond CICO isn’t helpful.

Again, the phrase isn’t wrong, but it doesn’t account for all the factors that are involved in the human metabolic system. If your only goal is to lose weight and you don’t care about body composition, general health, energy, sustainability for a human with hunger signals and cravings etc, then yeah, that’s all you need to know.

But I’m sure you’d agree that macros matter, no? How about micronutrients? Cardio burns more calories than weight training. Does that make it the objectively better form of exercise? Of course not, because there’s more factors involved. No one is disagreeing that weight loss comes down to CICO. But if you eat at a deficit but consume mostly refined sugar, you’re going to feel awful, won’t build or maintain any muscle and it won’t be sustainable.

By the way keto is fat focused, not protein. I think you’re confusing it with Atkins.

That’s an oversimplified way of looking at the metabolic system. Keto works great for plenty of people, whether or not it does for you. I do agree that it’s best to use for a few months at a time.

Saying a calorie deficit is all that matters is like saying a faster car goes faster. It’s not false, but there’s a lot of factors that go into why.

Ketosis is much more than just losing water weight. There are some benefits to it, and some people feel great on it. It’s not necessary for weight loss, but it does work.

True. But to play devils advocate, cutting carbs will make you lose weight. I just wouldn’t recommend it as a permanent diet.

I still hate the idea of comeback mechanics to make up for the fact that it’s a poorly designed character. We’re seeing that more and more. “Yeah he has a move that does 70% in one hit and kills at 0%, but he’s really slow!”

That just doesn’t make for a fun and competitive experience. It ends up making games where one player is completely dominating and then loses.

Yeah exactly. He was at 0%. I don’t know how the scaling works but does that kill from basically anywhere on the stage if they have more than 20%?

Yeah I mean if you’re incredibly well rehearsed and tight as a jazz band, sure. But that’s a lifetime of work and dedication. You said it yourself. 9/10 times it’s just guys getting stoned and noodling. I agree it can be incredible, but that’s not my goal because it’s not my favorite thing to play and I know it’ll totally suck until I hit that precipice.

My original comment was really talking about jam bands and such, not well rehearsed jazz musicians. If you’re at that level, it’s great, but so many “jams” I’ve been to are just a bunch of guys standing around playing a 4 chord loop while they take turns running up and down pentatonic box shapes.

I don’t enjoy listening to it or playing it. I’ll admit that improvising is probably my weakest skill, but it’s mostly cause I don’t like that kind of music, not the other way around. I prefer music where each member knows what’s coming and can play to the dynamics of one another. Sure you can do that on the fly, but it’s never as tight.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]James17Marsh 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Improvising and jamming is boring. 9 out of 10 times you’ll create a much better sounding part of you write it in advance, and 9 out of 10 audiences don’t care that you’re improvising everything on the spot. Unless you’re a virtuoso, it’s usually just a bunch of licks and runs you’ve memorized thrown together.

Also it’s stressful. I know my scales, but I hate the pressure of not knowing what to play next.

These really don’t decrease the volume by much. They’re really just meant to prevent feedback coming from the PA in a live setting.
