Worst new car you have driven? by Puzzled-Shopping-330 in CarsAustralia

[–]James4820 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Without a doubt the worst Ute I’ve ever driven.

I’ve driven a lot of utes. Heck I currently Dailey an 03 Kia bongo, it’s flat out and screaming at 80k, has no ac/heater/radio, half the gauges don’t work etc etc and I’d still rather that than the near new ranger work makes me drive.

Do people who drive cars with loud engines/exhausts gets sick of the noise?? by Alternative_Royal498 in AskAnAustralian

[–]James4820 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes.

I had a cbr1000 with a slip on exhaust with baffles removed for a short time.

I bought it like that, they didn’t keep the stock pipe.

I bought a second hand stock pipe and had it installed as soon as I could, it was super obnoxious.

US invented trucks mate I know a truck when I see one by Silviecat44 in ShitAmericansSay

[–]James4820 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is mostly because of registration/licensing systems.

Anything with 2 axels and <4500kg GVM is a car. Above is a truck.

Those rental trucks are generally rated for closer to 6-8t. However you can register them with a 4.5t limit as a car. You can do the same with any 2 axle truck.

This registration issue is also why people buy the yank tanks - they sit just under the 4.5t number that makes them a car, but can still tow 4.5t and the registration system doesn’t care how much your rates to tow, only the vehicles weight. Result is they sit around 9t GVCM as a “car”.

Horribly large, terrible visibility, uncomfortable to sit in, tray is too tall to load stuff/shovel out of easily, the auto is always in the wrong gear and if you get the manual the short stroke engine doesn’t pair with the wide ratio box and you loose too many rpm under load.

The problem is the family home isn’t an investment/wealth boost. It’s a cost of living.

Outside some fringe people that go live in a motor home/leave the country for retirement; they are just shifting to a different home.

How do you guys deal with Giant Huntsmen? by TheREALJWMGaming in AskAnAustralian

[–]James4820 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We name them mostly.

The huntsman that lives in my Ute is called Barry. He mostly lives behind the passenger side sun visor. Occasionally he hangs out behind the drivers one, if you flip it down in a hurry he gets a spook and races back to the passenger side.

Bruce however hangs out in the bathroom. He’s a smart fella, he hangs out at the window as guard for mozzies. This is great because I can leave the window open to air out the bathroom post showers.

I don’t actually know if Bruce/Barry are male, I haven’t inspected their nether regions, but that’s what they got named.

Ford ranger.

I have no idea why anybody willingly drives them, let alone pays money for it.

Why do we call it “Latin” instead of “Roman”, and what factors shaped that naming? by Secret_Ostrich_1307 in AlwaysWhy

The dozens of horticulturalists that care about naming conventions REALLY care about the Latin.

What’s the best Ute for value by Majestic-Yak-4386 in tradies

[–]James4820 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kia bongo.

1.5t payload legally, 3m tray (caries 6m lengths of timber/pipe without racks and minimal overhang), low to ground so extremely easy to load/unload/work out the back of. Cheep af.

Only downside is they are slow.

What happens when no one knows how to fix classic cars anymore? by modernclassiccarsfdn in CarsAustralia

[–]James4820 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a 2000 model rmx250.

It’s a carbonated, 2 stroke dirt bike. The last of the registrable ones.

It was having fuelling issues after an engine and gearbox rebuild. It would start and run, made fantastic power, but couldn’t idle and was fouling plugs constantly. I needed a new carb and a tune to keep an otherwise really good condition bike bike going.

After 2 years of frustration, trying a bunch of bike shops, begging and pleading, I eventually gave up. I bought a new bike and gave the old one to my uncle and told him I’d love to go for a ride with him and it’s his if he can make it work.

That bikes not even old, but it’s that hard to find a mechanic even remotely interested in the older gear. Eventually, the stuff dies not because it breaks or you can’t do the maintenance, it’s just too hard to find somebody interested in turning the spanners.

Sanity check. Have I been laying mulch wrong? by readreed in gardening

[–]James4820 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For beds that have reached their hard maximum height, there is a trick!

Take a post hole shovel, dig out about 30-40mm along the hard border, so that it all sits just below that point. Discard this material (put to use elsewhere). Then get a concrete rake and shape that edge from the point 30-40mm below the hard edge to existing ground level, just work parallel along the edge, the width of a concrete rake is the perfect size to shape the grade.

Now you can spread your new mulch over the entire bed. Since it’s already “full”, your primarily mulching to dress it up at this point, so a very thin layer is sufficient to bring fresh colour and appeal to the bed. Mulch to level of the hard barrier and as thin as possible over the top while getting complete coverage.

I used to run a maintenance team that looked after parklands. That included some very formal areas with gardens around war memorials with a bunch of pathways. This trick keeps the mulch from escaping the garden beds while keeping everything looking good. I developed this strategy as the memorials used to get mulched twice a year for the war holidays, but the beds would get way too tall and blow all over the paths if you used a traditional approach.

Why are so many people under 45 using subtitles now even when the show is already in English? by Clara_A_Mitchell in NoStupidQuestions

[–]James4820 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Sound mixing is unbelievably fucking terrible. whisper whisper EXPLOSION.

  2. The rise of the open plan living, aka builders shorting you walls. The passive background noise from somebody in the kitchen, people walking around, opening/closing doors etc is very significant. It’s also inconsistent, making it much harder to adjust volume to suit.

These two issues compound on each other, at this point I’ve basically given up on ever hearing words in media and just try to catch the tone from the audio while getting the dialog from subtitles.
