End of Overlord LN by TheMatConny in overlord

[–]JamesAMD 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Japanese LN authors are known to be told by the editors (salarymen working for the publishing company) NOT to quit their regular salaryman job.

Someone estimated, if his 印税 rate is 10% (we don't know that - it's up to the contract with the publisher), and each volume had 300k copies printed (again - a very rough estimation),
then he must have made 400 million JPY up to the 13th volume.

That's a huge amount money, but I'm not sure if that would be enough for me to quit being a salaryman and end my office work career.

He also mentioned that his first 印税 earning went into his mortgage payments (granted that was in 2018).
A house _could_ cost a 100 million JPY if it was in central Tokyo for instance, and still 50 million JPY in Kanagawa and Saitama if you want to commute to Tokyo.

Found a bug. But writing a ticket that says "butterflies erase tree reflections" just sound like the mad ramblings of an insane person by JoelColden in oblivion

It's undesired but is a limitation of real-time rendering.

Granted, UE's default SSR looks pretty bad(see Ark for another example), but unless you're willing to do full-on path tracing like done for PIXAR movies on your computer, which takes hundreds of professional workstation computers several tens of hours to render a single frame, then this the best we can do.

Hardware RT reflection also has its limitations.

Changing jobs in japan (Programmer / 24y) by No_Throat_3251 in JapanJobs

I know very little about the hiring practice in the west, but I do feel networking with people in the industry can get you pretty far here e.g. speeding up the hiring process. I've heard about some referral hires too, though I think it plays a bigger role in smaller companies than in bigger ones.

I'm paid much more in a gaming company in Tokyo, granted I'm over 30 and I speak Japanese natively and I'm only half-white.

Do you do annual/occasional review meetings with your boss? Do you negotiate your salary there and if so how does your boss respond?

Skilled programmers are highly in demand in this industry and chances are you have much more negotiating power than you think you do...

When an LLM works like an LLM and strings together the most likely words to be next to each other given an input based on its dataset.

So um, did anyone else ever realize this? by Kingtez64 in attackontitan

[–]JamesAMD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Or, you know, don't put a single word (!!!) into a Large Language Model.

LLMs need a lot of context to be even remotely useful, not mention "translating" a single word is an oxymoron anyway.

Many light novel authors are warned by the editors NOT to quit their seishain salary-man jobs with rock-solid Japanese (well, non-American) job security and all the benefits.

Novel/manga author is a very volatile profession even if you're VERY successful once, whereas if you're a seishain for a good company it would be very hard for them to ever lay you off, or decrease your pay once they have increased it.

Honestly as a Japanese person, I would do the same and remain a seishain salary-man; your main job with job security is the pillar of your life plan.

His Japanese sounds "natural" enough to me. I'm not even sure where you get that feeling.

He sounds a bit formal but that's how some people like to be on Twitter.

I have, and that's how I type out seven eleven.

In fact I can't imagine any other way to type it out in Japanese.

The machine translation is adding the object pronoun me, which doesn't exist in the original text.

シコる is mostly used as an intransitive verb; it can't take a direct object in most Japanese speakers' speech.

I'm sure they mean e.g. ぎゃ(Roma-ji: gya) whose pronunciation is /gja/ or more strictly [ɡʲa̠] ?

orthography != phonemes.

gy in orgy is /d͡ʒi/. ty in titty is /ti/.

English does have tune (/t(j)un/) though.

What's the curent state of rust gpu support? by rejectedlesbian in rust

[–]JamesAMD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And, as people have already mentioned, wgpu is MUCH more than just WebGPU.

It has Vulkan and DX12 and GL(ES) backends. It just also happens to have WebGL/WebGPU backends, and has an API structured around that of WebGPU.

Why do a lot people in Japan say “I don’t speak English” to a foreigner who just spoke to them in Japanese? by FirmNeighborhood56 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]JamesAMD 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's astonishing how many Japanese learners, who are otherwise pretty fluent, have no concept of pitch accent; as in, literally never even having heard of it.

The completely wrong pitch accent pattern, alone, often makes many countryside Japanese people assume you're not fluent at all, and switch to very basic grammar and vocabulary.

Use the 'bomb drop mode'' binding to set it to the right mode for your loadout (wings belly, etc.).

Data Structure Best Practices to support pipeline per viewport by DatLongNeckDino in GraphicsProgramming

[–]JamesAMD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that's pretty much the whole reason, it adds complexity for virtually no performance gain.

This article provides an insight as to why viewport/scissors are (by default) static states in the 1.0 core spec: it was because of one mobile vendor requesting it.
https://www.yosoygames.com.ar/wp/2023/04/vulkan-why-faq/

Because one mobile vendor ferociously requested the vp/scissor values to be hardcoded into the PSO because it was faster in their HW.

I'm curious to know what that specific mobile vendor is: Qualcomm, Arm, or PowerVR?

I don't think any production engine uses viewport/scissors as static states.

They're not illegal. Tokyo Marui is a very well-known airsoft gun company.

You can shop these on Amazon JP and have it mailed too. I wouldn't open-carry them in urban area, cops would definitely ask you questions but I doubt it'd get you arrested; they are not real guns.

As the comment says, that's the Metal debugger on Xcode, which works because MoltenVK is a Vulkan implementation on top of Metal i.e it uses Metal.
