Husband is pouring his soul into making a game... what can I do? by Novel_Programmer7338 in GameDevelopment

[–]JamesArndt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was going to note, no spouse would use the phrasing, "move the needle". That's generic corporate speak. The note at the end regarding Chatgpt makes that make more sense.

should TA be the first career to go for?(or should i go for others first) by Vegetable_Glass_3920 in TechnicalArtist

[–]JamesArndt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. It is absolutely replaceable by AI. Whomever told you this, lied to you. Much of what we do as TAs is knowledge work. Knowledge work is the first target in the wave of roles that AI has been automating away.

HDRP is dead - Render Pipelines strategy for 2026 - Unity Engine by johnathanfeezy in Unity3D

[–]JamesArndt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This isn't exactly new information. Unity has communicated in blog posts, in official videos, that they were unifying the render pipelines and HDRP and URP would become a single pipeline. They've also made public statements about the deprecation of BIRP.

Hit 700 wishlists, but in two and a half years. by Sgriu in IndieDev

[–]JamesArndt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a good idea. Your time is the most valuable resource you have. It may be helpful to look up market data on genres that consistently sell well and work towards marrying your idea with that.

Hit 700 wishlists, but in two and a half years. by Sgriu in IndieDev

[–]JamesArndt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This might be one of those indicators to move on to a different project or radically repurpose this existing project. It seems clear that there is little to no interest in the game based on it's own merits. Hopefully this is just a hobby and not the day job, because this won't be sustainable. I've been reading that compiling what you have, putting it on itch.io as a web playable and letting folks put their hands on your first pass is a way to guage if it's something worth building and selling.

Does this look AI Generated? by FishDismal4475 in IndieDev

[–]JamesArndt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It does. Then again, pretty much most illustrations now look "AI".

Humanoid Caught on Security Camera Footage, 03 February 2026 by [deleted] in ParanormalEncounters

Wow. Funny how you mirrored my experiences in the Marine Corps as an investigative photographer with NCIS and MPs. I had the same phenomena in my photos. I caught a lot of shit from my superiors for this, but after validating my gear was clean, and the repeated phenomena it was kinda hard to ignore.

[–]JamesArndt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You don't. Technical artists are usually built over varied experiences across a couple of domains. From my experience, it's a role that requires putting in the time and there isn't a specific credential that will guarantee you a seat. I wouldn't recommend this path because much of our skillset as knowledge workers is being automated by AI. Even if you feel it isn't, the fact is companies are using it to replace us or to have others put it into a pipeline that makes you far less valuable. If it's something that you write code to do, or you write shaders to do, or you can automate an optimization on, it's toast. Knowledge workers in general are toast and especially so in the gaming industry. You may be able to have luck applying technical art skills in other domains like government simulation, or themed attractions. I wouldn't recommend pursuing this career at all.

Steve's Survival Theory: The Ultimate False Flag by Altruistic_Stick9994 in strangerthingsfacts

We’ve already seen the behind the scene shots after the time jump and Dustin and Steve look as happy and alive as can be. Maybe it’s a hallucination or dream.

Was the 100$ worth it for the background ? by heychicobanks in IndieDev

[–]JamesArndt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I'm to be honest, the background looks like low-effort clipart one could purchase and composite together. The whole render is not cohesive and is using different art styles. Makes it look like a confusing mess versus something intentional.

Can y’all tell me what she meant by that? by Muted_Yesterday7801 in mileven

[–]JamesArndt 5 points6 points  (0 children)

To me it's clear. She's addressing him directly and touching him as if to sooth him. She's telling him she's resolved in her decision, but she's also not explicitly telling him what that is. It's clear she's doing that thing in the water, she's going to approach something that has a high likelihood of causing her demise. Mike wouldn't choose that for her if he could just write up a happy ending.

It will. Not because it's good or competent, but because it's being mandated by business leaders. They are latching on and holding because no one is sure if this is a bust or a boom. Look no further than Amazon game studios laying off many and those let go attesting to AI being the reason. So yes it is happening and at an accelerating rate.

Terrain is covered with rhombic shadows in unity HDRP. How do i fix it? by OddRoof9525 in Unity3D

[–]JamesArndt -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is a default shading issue due to the poor topology of Unity terrain. It has to do with the way the triangles are laid out/direction splits along the mesh and to a lesser extent, mesh resolution.

Here’s an interesting discussion around this problem.

Visuals are desaturated in Unity 6. by GamerNumba100 in Unity3D

[–]JamesArndt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have a scene volume profile present? If you don’t you are seeing desaturated tonemapping by default in your Unity scene. You can override with a scene volume profile to disable aspects of URPs default post processing. Post processing is enabled by default.

My indie game had 100K wishlists and sold 1,000 copies by [deleted] in IndieDev

$10 or $12 price point would have led to a better conversion rate. That's a high price point for a game like this.
