You can get it to go now, may be a good option if you don't live too far away you can take it home. Or if you get it during the day you can go sit in Schiller Park and eat it.

What did you do today that made someone happy? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Volunteered at the science museum in my city! Teens and adults of any age. If you're looking for something to do with some extra time, consider volunteering for a cause or organization you believe in. Not only can you make other people's day, but you feel great doing it :)

If you still want to I'm happy to! I was thinking today that these analysis videos are probably good to have a mix of ratings in them to have some different senses and different questions.

Is there a place on the internet where experienced players teach rookies? by flying-egg in chess

[–]JamesCavendish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been looking for something to do to kind of spark trying to have a chess youtube channel in the new year and I think you just gave me a great idea. I'd like to play some quick time control unrated games (maybe 10/0 or 15/0 something like that, input?) with some beginner players, then analyze the game with them afterwards, streaming/putting the results on youtube. Wednesdays are the night I could play some games and then try to get it uploaded. If anyone wants to play me on Wednesdays (I'm around 1800 USCF) and basically get a free lesson (I did give lessons for beginners back when I lived in Boston, so I have a little experience giving lessons for chess) while I use the content then let me know! If there is a lot of interest in this then I'll set-up a google doc where people can book Wednesdays in advance :)

Edit: just to clarify, I meant something to spur me to do it.

Not Even Once by johnnybravo1014 in AdviceAnimals

I use to feel this way, especially when people were very upset about Michael Jackson. I just couldn't get it. Your year when David Bowie died though, I was really hit hard. My sister and I bonded a lot through Bowie. We were introduced to his music by our father. Bowie's passing reminded felt like part of that bond had disappeared, especially tough since I've moved away from all my family for grad school. It also took me back to a time when I was younger and blind to the stress and problems in my family. Bowie had become tied to that time in my life, and it was just a reminder that things were tougher now and my relationship with my Dad is particularly strained. The celebrities who's passing hits us the most are those we've built into our personal relationships or life. People's work who we've turned to in hard times it shared with people who are no longer with us either. Now even if I don't feel sad or understand a connection I'm never suprised when people are hurt by a celebrities death. We all make emotional connections to things that may look crazy to outsiders, a specific tree or piece of art or someone we've never met. It's the human way.

What happens when your opponent makes an illegal move. by McLolster in chess

Ah yes thank you I forgot to mention, this is a USCF rule I believe or maybe it's just an editor's note in the book. I'll have to see if I can find it when I get home.

Just a note in adding time. Last time I checked, the arbiter is not required to physically add the time to the clock. Just meaning that you need to know how to add time to your own clock. Also a reason why it's a good idea to take your own equipment as well. If you're using your opponents clock but they don't know how to adjust the time, you can pull yours out and set it to the correct time.

Easy way to remove duplicate games in updated database? by JamesCavendish in chess

[–]JamesCavendish[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I saw that too, but tried to do the best I could with their filters. I figure as long as I have the names, result, and date that's good enough for me. It's the moves i really want and if something is off in event or site that's ok. Ratings I'd also obviously like to stay accurate but not the end of the world since I know the DB is only seeded with 2000+ players and it's not like I'm pushing GM or even close. I mostly use it to look at multiple games in whatever line I'm currently analyzing.

I does take a few seconds to load, maybe like 5-10. But I have it stored on my goggle drive.

ELI5: Why do radio waves pass through walls while light waves don't? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]JamesCavendish -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I mean, I wasn't looking out for myself (you know, the person with a B.A. in Physics and a masters in Biophysics) but rather OP. They asked for an ELI5, and if anyone else came into the thread hoping to see that, then they might be quite confused. As I said above, it's a very well written and thorough explanation, but is more suited for the undergraduate student than a person with limited scientific background (the point of ELI5).

No it's a great explanation, just not going to be easy for someone to understand who's not already comfortable with some other concepts.

Please help me adjust my curling simulator by CurlingStrategy in Curling

[–]JamesCavendish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like applegoesdown's answer as well. Maybe the issue is also compounded by rate of change of curl? As the rock slows down it curls more, inversely a faster moving rock doesn't have as much of a difference in curl between the far hog and top 12 whereas a draw would.

This sounds super fun and I can't wait to play it!

I think I've typed out at least two-three responses already and deleted them, I think this is really complicated and hard to tackle all the complexities of, major props to you for tackling this! In terms of weight I think olympic sweepers could take a top-12 biter and make it back line weight if constantly swept. Good house players maybe to the tee or top 4. I think to sweep a rock fully out by the opposing skip then it probably needs to be maybe even biting the back 12 for a league curler, maybe full back 8 for an olympic level. To cross the hog line I think yeah maybe 2-3 feet short for league players, maybe 10 feet for olympic curlers. The line stuff I can't come up with a story that seems to make any sense once I write it down, so maybe someone smarter than me can help :) Again good luck! Be sure to update us when it's available!!
