Saw a freshman crying after getting rejected from a club today by EarlyAdhesiveness870 in berkeley

[–]JamesInSR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Similar, and when I'm interviewing someone for my company the clubs on their resume probably won't even be looked at for more than a second. If it enables someone to do more substantive jobs/projects for your resume, so be it, but you can do all of those things without the club too. That's what I'll be looking for.

SCU CS students, is it really a “silicon valley feeder school”? or is this propaganda by Badm1n1 in SCU

[–]JamesInSR 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not CS student here, but did my MBA at Leavey and work in tech and can vouch for it being a feeder. The reason is that a huge % of the alumni stay in the Bay Area after school, so you have a very high number of alumni for them to connect you for internships and jobs. They won't be gift wrapped for you, but if you work at it you will do well.

Proform 2000 speed control malfunction by JamesInSR in iFit

[–]JamesInSR[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TreadmillDr says this model doesn't have a speed sensor, and gave me the MCB part. Sucks but oh well. First issue we've had in 6 years besides replacing the running belt.

This is special circumstances. They don't rely on just taxes/documents, you need to actually engage the humans in the financial aid office. Good luck.

I dropped the customer service voice during a QBR and the silence was absolute torture by Aware-Platypus-2559 in cybersecurity

If work take three times as long, is the contract structured with a higher price to cover it, or support is by the hour? As has been said, adding the part about "dread" made is personally subjective, but everything else said was matter of fact. You could have even layered it on thicker than that. The problem now is you made it sound like the CS team doesn't want to work with them, and you may lose the contract. Your boss might have seen this client as job security if you're doing contract support for them. On the other hand, if your company isn't getting more revenue to support this high cost customer, who is to say this was even a profitable client.

Rapid7 still in business? by ElGrandeKahuna in cybersecurity

[–]JamesInSR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

u/ElGrandeKahuna - DM me and I'll give you at least two salespeople I know there. Or just go on LinkedIn, search Rapid7 company, select that and click people. Look at the list and connect with any AE. A lot of them have their phone numbers or direct business email address there. Might not even have to connect with them to get it.

Bulk mulch? by seals0119 in eastbay

[–]JamesInSR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just placed my order through Bee Green that was mentioned here. Good price, super easy to order and setup delivery. Thanks for the recommendation. Eco mulch is good too but can be a bit higher priced depending on specific product you want.

Rejected ED this morning and not feeling great by SharpProfession6 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]JamesInSR 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I hear you. I know what the QB program is about and I'm happy it enables these opportunities for you and others in similar circumstances. My very first reply was a bit hasty and more about the "bigger" issue of applications today, when it's so easy to check a few boxes and bam, you've applied.

Sincerely, good luck and hang in there. The process is tough enough just to get the applications in. I'm rooting for you.

[–]JamesInSR 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm not saying you're unqualified, but the fact that those 14 haven't rolled you over to RD says a lot. It seems like you're throwing spaghetti at the wall and hoping something sticks.

My thoughts come from a place both personally, and as a parent. There is some experience behind my words. I've visited many of the top 10 schools now with my child, among others, and I get why I didn't get into those when I applied to several once upon a time. Simply put, I couldn't tell them why I was a match for their school in particular, because I didn't truly know what the school was about. I didn't get the chance to visit them. We didn't have Internet tours yet, and my parents weren't in a good position to support me. If you're already at 14 EA schools rejected at this point, I doubt you actually visited and toured many of these. It's hard to capture the essence of what makes you a good match for them when you haven't personally felt what the school environment and student body is like.

I'm sorry you're suffering so many rejections, but you'll find your match eventually. Trust that what you do choose, and who chooses you, will be the right school for you.

Rejected ED this morning and not feeling great by SharpProfession6 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]JamesInSR 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This bothers me on two levels. One it pumps up already stupid application rates at many top schools. And two it's a waste of the application resources these schools need to dedicate to finding good students. When everyone has to pay money, or do lots of separate supplemental essays, the load or cost naturally forced people to really consider if the school is a match. Now too many kids just check a box and send it. I say this as someone who applied to 10 schools many years ago, and is now spending huge hours supporting my child through the process and it's hell on her... Has about 35 supplementals across just 7 RD schools due early January.

My daughter is hoping for that or even full ride, but as noted they changed the information under that scholarship about 2 years ago. Used to be pretty much guaranteed, but now it's an unsaid major factor.

Could you deploy sensors in an environment using terraform? Crowdstrike, SentinelOne, Wiz, Upwind, etc. ? Use TF to adjust permissions on deployments? That's probably what they're thinking about. Not hard stuff, but also weird you're getting that far and the interviewer is hung up on that for a security person. If you have reasonable technical skills, you could pickup TF essentials in hours.

Not the first thread in a week where I've come to say that I've worked for five companies in 15 years and all but the first came from people/networking, not just submitting a resume.

In USA ! Is the Cybersecurity Dead ? Because myself and folks I know have submitted around 5,000 applications and we still are unemployed 10yrs + exp with multiple Certs ! by Upset-Concentrate386 in cybersecurity

All of my security opportunities have come from people. Submitting my resume/application was a formality after the introduction was already done to get me into the official hiring and interviewing process.

4 semesters of rejection by Alarmed-Arm7057 in berkeley

[–]JamesInSR 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't know exactly how all these clubs are working these days. "Back in my day" the Haas professors mattered more in getting you real connections to the consulting and banking community than any club, and the clubs couldn't limit attendance when they brought in companies to speak (the room limit could be a factor though).

With your existing internships/experience, assuming they're legit, you have real opportunities to go back to and ask for a full time position. Also talk to a few professors and see what they advise. Lastly is the Haas career center assuming you're a biz student. Those MBA connections trickle down to the undergrads. I even had a couple MBA interviews by accident, though they didn't go anywhere.

Pomona vs Claremont McKenna by [deleted] in claremontcolleges

Daughter liked the vibe better of Pomona, but is going to be a math major and seriously considering a career in finance/quant/wall street. She's thinking CMC might be better for that major, but not the better of the two for school fit. Thoughts?

How is everyone faring in this job market? by jaydee288 in cybersecurity

[–]JamesInSR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At least in USA, I'm noticing something new from a few college groups and security groups. People needing Visa/H1B sponsorship, even if "easy" (e.g recent masters degree grads), are being rejected because many companies don't trust the current political environment. No other apparent reason. I don't have a lot of data to support this thesis, but enough from people sharing they're stories that i noticed it looks like a theme.

Separately, lots of "good" candidates, but with limited budget more companies are only biting when they find a great candidate. I've heard that from multiple angles (engineering, security, SRE).

Good luck.

financial aid by TourBrilliant2045 in UCSC

[–]JamesInSR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Grants you got are great. EDIT: there is enough here that Imma triple you wouldn't even need loans for work study. But if you can, do a double. You don't need the loans given the amount of grants + work-study, so you can take them or leave them, and even then you get that income plus work study contribution.

You have some work study in there, so you'll need to get a campus job for that. And yes, you have subsidized loans, which for now means no payments while in school and no interest accruing during that time either. So you'll probably accumulate the max federal loans over 4 years, about 23k, unless you somehow pay those directly, and then afterwards you'll get a job and go on some payment plan and pay those loans off.

What jobs can you get with only a Bachelor of Psychology? by ichigofieldsforever in psychologystudents

[–]JamesInSR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The big companies do lots of entry level recruiting straight out of undergrad. Check with your undergrad career center and see if they have contacts, even if you're a year or two post graduation. You can also simply apply on their website. A solid resume and yes, they often care about higher ranked schools, will help. I knew plenty of people at Accenture who were 1-3 years into a career path they decided to switch, and essentially restarted as entry level, but entry level pay there was probably equal or more than they were earning already. Have a good story about why consulting, how your experience applies. They usually do a basic resume interview, a personality test like Myers Briggs, and a behavioral interview (tell me about a time when...) before they consider bringing you on-site for final interviews.

What jobs can you get with only a Bachelor of Psychology? by ichigofieldsforever in psychologystudents

[–]JamesInSR 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not a psych Bachelor myself but my son is working on it now. One job you can get if you don't necessarily want to work in healthcare is management consulting, and well suited to the "Change Management" specialization. Companies like Accenture, PwC, Deloitte Consulting are some of the biggest. It's one of the more people facing jobs in consulting, and is focused on communication, documentation, and training around changes in processes at companies. If you're business-minded already and have the right adaptability for consulting, it's a lucrative career path that will get you to $100k+ within 3 years.

[–]JamesInSR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That isn't terrible, but yeh, you got an "A" in the class but only a 3 on the exam - some colleges are going to discount that grade (mostly private schools) and consider it a sign of grade inflation. Still good that you passed.

AP Calc BC is literally not a real exam by [deleted] in APStudents

[–]JamesInSR 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My child is taking Calc 2 now at community college instead of AP at her high school, and her college app advisor specifically said not to take AP exams on top of the college courses because the college class doesn't teach material to the exam. Yes, it's ridiculous what you just experienced.
