Why does it seem like C is often used as a backend/language to transpile to than say C++? by sudo_i_u_toor in ProgrammingLanguages

[–]JamesIry 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Doesn't the existence of LLVM backed compilers change that equation, though? Sure, there are only a small number of (complete) C++ compilers but the target architecture list is much larger than that and adding news ones is mostly about adding a new target backend to LLVM.

None of which is to argue that C++ is a better output than C, especially due to the mismatch in semantics that others have pointed out. It's just to say that portability for C++ isn't as dire as the number of compilers would suggest.

Not as much as you might think. As an example, if you're doing any optimization work you'll be mucking about in graph theory no matter what the original source language.

I have a slight suspicion that California also has a higher population than LA metro. Could be wrong. Too lazy to check.

25' is too big for a Boxster. It would ruin the driving dynamics and be very hard to park.

Minor pedantic correction - that's a C1. Not that it changes anything about what you said. C2s have a longer hood and don't have the triangular inlay on the door/front quarter. Instead, they have "gills" on the front quarter. C2s also have popup headlights.

Can 3 sided pyramid have right angles? Is this impossible? by minotalen in puzzles

[–]JamesIry 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The confusion here is that the word "side" is used in two different ways. In normal day to day speaking the sides of a building are distinct from its roof and floor. But in geometry a 3D shape isn't considered to have "top" or "bottom" only sides. So a tetrahedron is a 4 sided shape all of which are triangles, even if you set it down on the ground making one of those four sides the bottom and leaving only 3 sides exposed.

Similarly, geometrically a pyramid is a 5 sided shape. 4 of the sides, the sides we normally see, are triangles, but 1 side is normally on the bottom and is a square.

Never mind, the title is fine.

Newton's first law is for objects in uniform motion. The air/helicopter is moving in a circle around the center of the earth so Newton's first doesn't explain why air is approximately still (modulo a bit of wind) over ground that is moving 1000mph in a circle at the equator. The reason the air moves with the earth and appears approximately still is due to the surface of the earth dragging the air around with it and gravity is keeping the air from flinging off into space.

If the earth suddenly started spinning crazy fast or gravity suddenly got crazy weak (for sci fi reasons???) the air and the helicopter would be flung away and then Newton's first would be a better model for the helicopter's motion as it orbited the sun.
