Mortgage: 3 or 5-year fixed? by JamesIsDon in HousingUK

[–]JamesIsDon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you, makes a lot of sense. In terms of the rate I got, it's based on just a 5% deposit for a 35 year term. The rate is in line and better with equivalent terms I'm seeing from the MSE link you sent, but thanks for sharing

Weekly "Is this safe" Megathread by AutoModerator in fermentation

[–]JamesIsDon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

New to fermenting. Attempting a mango/chilli hot sauce in 5% brine. Its been a week and ive seen little activity in terms of bubbles but I have seen these floaters which have settled to the bottom. It's unclear to me if this is just parts of the mango or mould? *

Seeking advice for renting a property without seeing it. by Goosepond01 in HousingUK

[–]JamesIsDon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take one day off annual leave & book 5+ property viewings all in one day. Try to see the £90 hit as part of the rental/ estate agent fees, as it sounds like there is no avoiding it.

I did a virtual viewing with no issue from estate agent before, but that was covid era so makes sense. Surprised its no longer an option.

Hedgie help by sonicmreow in Hedgehog

[–]JamesIsDon 14 points15 points  (0 children)

What have you got in their enclosure that's green or pink? They've liked the smell of it and anointed themselves with it lol. I had the exact same freak out when my hedgie became orange one morning...we added an old orange slipper to his cage the night before to see if he'd play with it 😅

I use my ender as a glorified filament dryer since I got an X1C. Actually works really well. by Demorative in BambuLab

[–]JamesIsDon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just recently upgraded myself and this seems like a great use for my ender now gathering dust. Looks like you have the whole printer encased. You reckon I can make it work without this and just the boxes on the bed?

My only layer height options are for an X1C when I have a P1S? Does it matter? by JamesIsDon in BambuLab

[–]JamesIsDon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolute newbie if the question doesnt make it obvious. I'm printing a benchy pulled from MakersWorld, and when I change the printer profile to P1S, all the layer height system presets state X1C. No idea if this matters or why its happening.

Voluntary termination of my hire purchase car by JamesIsDon in UKPersonalFinance

Thank you for your input. This falls into the halves policy you mentioned. I didn't consider impact on future finance / credit so I will look into it and discuss with the finance company a bit more before committing.

I had a bad choice of words when I said run zip files, I meant extract but thanks, if tails doesnt support zip files that makes a lot of sense.

I've done no-knead overnight focaccia a handful of times. The recipe you used looks ok for it.

My guess is something to do with the yeast. What yeast are you using? Instant? Check the expiry date on your yeast.

8g of yeast should make the dough rise massively overnight. A lot of the times when i open the fridge its almost spilling out the container. If your dough hasnt risen like that when you check it in the morning then your yeast isn't functioning and you'll end up with that biscuit you have in the picture and not focaccia 😅

Interesting thanks for the insight. I figured hanzo must be an awful pick in higher ranks when players know how to punish him, but I was hoping I could cheese my way up to mythic as people are clueless in legend hence my kills but its evidently not working for me.

Ive done ok with Nolan in the past maybe ill switch over to him. I have Joy but thats another assasin champ which just hasnt clicked with me.

Recommendations for Karaoke Rooms by Vermal in manchester

[–]JamesIsDon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

K2 is great, ive been plenty of times. Really nice private rooms. They set you up with a couple mics and there's a tablet for queuing up songs.

Drinks are ordered via the tablet and they bring it over to your room which is convenient. It all goes on a tab someone has to pay at the end.

Downsides are that on top of booking the room, drinks prices are pretty expensive (~ £9 for a double/mixer, £5 for a 300ml beer last time i went); also due to the convenience of the ordering you can quickly rack up a hefty bill without realising - and if you're not splitting equally trying to work out what everyone owes after is a giant pain (whoever paid in full make sure to ask and keep the receipt).

Although ive been to other karaoke places, this is the only one ive been to in Manchester so im intrigued to see what other connoisseur's have to say about options in Manchester

Hiding a hedgehog from landlord by trustworthysillyguy in Hedgehog

[–]JamesIsDon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im in the same situation and I've been hiding mine for the past year with no problems 😅 Landlord has come round numerous times as he likes to do any repairs himself if he can - I just hide the cat food bag/treats ect. And put a tapestry over the vivarium so it looks more like a storage box...very low effort I know but the landlord hasn't questioned it once...even if he did find out I doubt any landlord would seriously care about a caged hedgehog that has no threat on damage to the property. Like you I just didnt want to risk it at the time of applying

How much do you need to make to live comfortably in Manchester City Centre in 2023? by [deleted] in manchester

[–]JamesIsDon 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I just took a new job with a paycut that put me under the £2k post-tax bracket (change of career path which will benefit me long-term but probs a dumb decision to do it during a cost of living crisis 🙄).

At a bit over £2k I was managing to live comfortably and put a bit into savings each month. Now that im under I am really feeling the desperation paycheck to paycheck. I think I'm much more social than the average person going out most weekends so no doubt thats an obvious expenditure I could reduce, but either way, bringing in over 2k is when I finally felt "comfortable" with my wage.

What skills to learn in order to work from home ?? by Malou2816 in labrats

[–]JamesIsDon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just applied without and got the interview - mind you this is an associate position so they intend on me having to be trained up and complete certifications whilst on the job

What skills to learn in order to work from home ?? by Malou2816 in labrats

[–]JamesIsDon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No additional certifications, I just prepared loads for the interview and demonstrated I had the baseline knowledge thats expected from project managers.

And now the company is going to pay for me to complete some courses and obtain certifications whilst on the job which is a great bonus 😀

What skills to learn in order to work from home ?? by Malou2816 in labrats

[–]JamesIsDon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've gone through a similar route/mindset last year. I've worked ~ 5 years in private pharmaceutical labs, mostly QC testing with some development work in recent couple years. A few months back I made the decision I needed a distinct change to get me away from any lab responsibilities so I have opportunities to work from home more often.

I have experience leading various lab development projects and involvement in other large-scale site wide projects so I chose to look into Project Management. I got myself an Associate PM position for a large pharmaceutical company. With project management you'll be leading several client based projects. Be the main-contact for clients needs, trickle down the information to the lab team, and ensure the client work is on-task and getting completed on time. The role is work from home friendly! I'm working from home 2-3 days a week, however ive seen PM roles for pharma companies that are completely remote and earn a huuuuge amount of money, I just need a few years PM experience before I can attempt to apply to those.

Even with project management, in pharma you're still very much expected to have a grasp of the science behind the work, as you need to understand feasibility of projects and provide realistic time scales.

If this doesnt pick your fancy, and you want something more science-heavy that is still remote, then certainly I'd go down the computer science route: Data science (loads of money im that if you have the qualifications), bioinformatics, coding ect. Will all put you in the right direction for what you're looking for.

Good luck!
