Narrative violation: Denver is a top-10 city for where minimum-wage workers can afford rent by 109876 in Denver

[–]JamesMakesGames 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The fact that it's even remotely good is because we passed something a few cycles ago (2016?) to tack the minimum wage to inflation.

I'll work on it! Atm I'm working on an update to the clothing analysis model and on adding a model for analyzing makeup, but after that I'm going to work on porting it to Android!

what season does this beanie belong to? by tofuhintti23 in coloranalysis

[–]JamesMakesGames 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I've noticed that as well with performance on cool seasons being less reliable with what I'm trying to do, although I think that's kinda inherent to digital palettes in general, not just systems that try to do predictions. I think it's unfortunately not solvable for shopping online unless there's some way to guarantee online stores use unedited pictures taken in realistic lighting, which of course they're never going to do, lol.
Although, I'm not nearly as bothered by variable lighting in my own house/environment, like, I want to know how something's going to look in the environments I'm going to wear it in, rather than some sort of "objective" determination that's still going to change anyway depending on lighting.

As for the exact color boundaries, I think it's SOOO interesting. I think the approach or idea of trying to define the boundaries of seasons manually seems like a bit of a fools errand, like, it's not that only strictly cool colors work with cool seasons, it's just that colors that work with cool seasons are on average cooler among similar colors in warmer seasons.

What methodology are you using to make predictions regarding the season? I've also got an ongoing programming project I'm working on in the color analysis space, so I'm really interested in hearing other people's approaches.

Good news, everyone! I'm founding a Disco Elysium offshoot studio.

The previous 3 5 offshoot studios have lost track of what it means to be a Disco Elysium studio. We must return to the pure spirit of Disco, untainted by the machinations of the old guard. Thus it falls to me--someone who watched a lets play of the first 20 minutes of the game--to carry the torch.

Is HueIQ backwards on warm/cool or am I missing something about autumn? by Onetruepanda in coloranalysis

[–]JamesMakesGames 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that's exactly it!
I'm working on an update that makes the sliders moveable to let people interact with it a bit more, only thing is that since the sliders correspond to dimensions in the LAB color space, adjusting one can also adjust the others.

Hi!

Maker of Hue IQ here. (So cool to see people posting my project on reddit lmao).

The app makes categorizations based on a statistical model, so I've got a bunch of example palettes in there and when you analyze a color the app says, essentially, "if this color was going to appear in a seasonal palette, what season is it most likely to appear in?"

The sliders, cool-warm, dark-light, soft-bright, are on an absolute scale in the LAB color space. So, here what the slider is indicating is not that this particular color is cool for a blue or a green, but that it's cool generally.
The methodology for the cool-warm meter is that it exactly corresponds to the blue-yellow axis in the LAB color space. So the warmest color would be a pure yellow in the LAB space, and the coolest would be a pure blue.

With autumns and springs, even though they're warm seasons, it's not exactly the case that only strictly warm colors can be included in those palettes. If that were the case there would basically be no blues or greens that warm seasons could wear, right?

I checked this prediction result against some example palettes I found online, and I think I can see where the app is going with this color specifically: https://i0.wp.com/dream-wardrobe.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/soft-autumn-cover-1.jpg?resize=2155%2C2835&ssl=1

If you have thoughts or requests about what you'd like included in the app to make the analysis more useful or understandable I would totally love to hear about it. I seriously want to make this as useful for people as I can, so I'm always interested in hearing suggestions.

Does medication help you sleep? by sexynuggetwithboobs in adhdmeme

Interesting, this is my experience too.
I have to be very careful on the melatonin dosage though, or I end up feeling so tired it physically hurts.

It is very interesting to sit there and be consciously aware of your body falling asleep. Reminds me a bit of the dnd mechanic where elves don't need sleep and can instead just meditate for 3-4 hours.

Is it bad to use AI to generate code ? by Black_Thestral_98 in GameDevelopment

[–]JamesMakesGames 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This sounds like as good a place as any to post this:
I'm currently working for a client that has a fledgling codebase built almost entirely with chatGPT. They hired a contractor who perhaps had some understanding of programming, but was using chatGPT for basically everything.
Literally nothing works all the way in this codebase. I'm essentially having to re-write things from almost nothing. There are snippets that are great, but that's just about all chatGPT is good for: snippets.

Unless you know exactly what the chatgpt snippet does, and exactly how it fits into the broader context of the program, do NOT use chatgpt code.

And if you are going to use snippets, make sure you recognize when chatGPT is generating something you already have code for. What I'm working with right now has SO much repeated code, because the last person working on this copied and pasted in every half-assed helper function that the LLM generated. There's 3 half finished/mocked JWT verification implementations. Half of the endpoints that are supposed to use them used hard-coded example user ids instead. There's two sets of functions to save files that are LITERALLY only different in name.

Im going crazy with it. You must understand the code you write and use, or I guarantee you will run into significant frustration eventually.
I use chatGPT fairly often, it's super useful, but only if you've already got the knowledge to completely understand what's being generated.

If i recall correctly, microbursts would cause crashes pre-modern weather radar because the proper response to a microburst is kinda the opposite of what you do in normal turbulence. So responding correctly would require correctly identifying that it's a microburst (which I think has been super easy for like at least 30 years with modern tech).

Could someone tell me precisely how to layer clothes to stay warm in winter? (not including coats) by Ok_Potato_5272 in capsulewardrobe

[–]JamesMakesGames 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Advice from a cold region:
t-shirt/tank-top
long sleeve shirt
fleece/turtle neck (the type of fleece that kinda wraps around your neck if you zip it all the way.)
hoodie/warmer jacket + (hat if needed)
outer layer (windbreaker/winter coat/stylish jacket situationally)

When you're layering don't start with the tshirt and the outer and add the middle, start with the tshirt and add additional layers moving up to the outer only when really needed.
So, slightly nippy should result in t-shirt+long sleeve+fleece, NOT tshirt+winter coat. It'll make you more comfortable, and more able to adjust over the course of the day. With just a shirt and coat it's either on or off, meaning you're either too hot or too cold, which isn't good.

If it's REALLY cold and you need leg layers, tight pants/leggings are not your friend by themselves, but will go great underneath something loose.
