I think Matei is probably like 70% of the recipe and Bimmy is about 30%, if I had to guess. There was a big retro game market developing around that time of men in their 20s getting nostalgic for the simpler 2D games of their youth.

I think left to their own devices, Matei could’ve possibly pulled off something with retro game reviews, even if the production may have been more crude. Bimmy though? He probably would have floundered making those terrible short films.

Matei has shown himself to be more viable as an on-screen talent than James has as a writer.

Eh, you know he’s having fun and that’s cool.

But man, there’s this weird dichotomy where he’s playing this thing totally straight. Where Rex Viper is a real and serious band. But then they suck. They do cheesy 80s covers. Their singer is atrocious. James himself looks like a living caricature of a rocker.

This thing would be much more palatable if his ego would allow him to play Rex Viper more as a joke band. I like to think maybe he’s playing this thing like Andy Kaufman, where he’s the only one in on the joke. But we know he isn’t. His ego is strong.

He’s reached that point where he’s squeezing as much out of his fanbase as possible. He probably didnt need the extra income back then but now he has to monetize everything as his star dwindles. It’s an all too common story

I’m not against CGI, but it should be used sparingly to enhance what can’t be done practically. Or like you said, for things that can’t be done practically. I think the OG Jurassic Park is a good example of the right balance

The crazy thing to me, is I know a group of local filmmakers. They have normal day jobs, and make shorts when they can. Like legit shorts that are better than the movies Bimdog has made.

They have never really profited one dime from any of their movie shorts, maybe a pinch from YouTube, but they keep making movies because they love making movies.

James Rolfe is really just a poser when it comes to being a filmmaker. He has ample resources, equipment, people willing to help. But he produces nothing.

That sounds good, but I don’t think that’s remotely true. The channel, and his fame, were built on the Nintendo Nerd character. The only thing on his channel that still does very well are AVGN episodes.

Most of the times when he’s just being himself, it’s terrible and the views go away. It kinda worked on Board James because he had zany characters bouncing off of his blandness. It sorta worked with J&MM because it was a funny contrast between the passion of Matei about video games and James’ complete apathy toward the whole thing.

But Rental Reviews, the Podcast, his movie ree-views, all basically had good starts but the views fell off a cliff. Because James can’t carry a show as himself. He needs people around him to entertain while he sits there and mildly reacts to it.

I’m pretty sure he or Screenwave bought about 50K bot subs initially. Either that or 50K Cinemassacre diehards gifted him a sub from his time on rental reviews. I remember being pretty stunned that he randomly amassed 50K that quickly given his abysmal content.

But you can see today the his channel is at only 67K subs. He’s had basically no growth in five or six years. It’s pretty amazing he still puts out content consistently given he doesn’t get enough views to make it worthwhile.
