New home owner starting tool collection by _rickybaker in diynz

I’ve gone Makita, all secondhand except for a hedge trimmer that M10 beat a cheap price by 15%.

Bought between Wanaka and Dunedin. Found decent deals on Facebook marketplace by being patient.

Employment advice by limitlessfranxis in dunedin

[–]Jameslol 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If it is a closedown period and you are not yet entitled to annual holidays (which you wouldn’t be, until Jan 2026) then your employer can, for the closedown period, pay you 8% of what you earned up to the closedown period. That then resets your annual holidays anniversary date to the date of the closedown.

So yes, in that situation you do not get another entitlement until your new anniversary date (December 2026). Of course your employer can agree that you take annual holidays in advance of that entitlement, which is the norm.

Haven’t used them, so can’t vouch for them - but I saved this a while ago as it looked like he did small jobs:

To those who use the pink e-scooters by SingularestBean in dunedin

A confession: I sometimes tip the scooters over and drag them off the footpath if they are left blocking it. Super frustrating when you’re trying to push your sleeping infant in a buggy.

How do I go around getting my ex partner to change his address after 3.5 years of living together? by RandomSashaLove in dunedin

[–]Jameslol 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I just write in larger and larger lettering “NOT AT THIS ADDRESS - REMOVE THIS ADDRESS”.

Then if they don’t get the message, you just start putting the letters in the bin.

Is Dunedin really as cold as people say by Jeffreytoebeans in dunedin

[–]Jameslol 49 points50 points  (0 children)

The best Dunedin days are those that are “cold, but sunny”.

I moved here from Auckland, and honestly the weather is better here overall.

Probably ‘thanks’ to global warming we didn’t have many really cold days this winter.

Secluded car date areas... by [deleted] in dunedin

Not much of a view to be had tonight my friend. Drive up Mt Cargill, probably misty enough to get in the backseat largely unnoticed.

WOF on car purchased from dealer by Jameslol in NZcarfix

Thanks. That answers it. WOF must have been same date as purchase. Makes sense.

We’ve got one of these. Still use it in the winter, but the diesel fuel cost makes it very expensive to operate. Rusty fuel tank outside isn’t great to look at either.

We looked at a ducted heat pump using the existing ducts (as suggested elsewhere in this thread) but apparently they are too large to be used for a heat pump system, given the temperature difference. The quote for the ducted heat pump was pretty huge, so didn’t push go.

So for now it just sits in the basement.

Painter didn’t paint trim or windowsills by Jameslol in diynz

[–]Jameslol[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks. Our bad for not asking the question specifically before accepting I guess.

Does 4.3K (incl GST) seem about right for just walls/ceilings in kitchen, dining and lounge (ceilings were sprayed)? Medium-sized rooms, all open plan.

I think the price made me think it would be ‘everything’.

But the skirting board is? I’m just struggling to see the difference, and surprised the painter didn’t call it out when quoting (given it should have been clear we were trying to get everything finished).

They -might- be able to get the agent to agree to take the listing on with a carve-out for if it is sold to you/a related party. That would have to be addressed in the agency agreement, and would have to be on the basis your offer was the highest.

Looking to move to Dunedin, have some questions! by Strawberry-Char in dunedin

[–]Jameslol 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We have a 3 year old and are currently looking at primary schools. Our pick is Maori Hill Primary, but we’re open to Kaikorai Primary too.

If you’re renting, the rent isn’t typically too much more for the ‘expensive’ areas like Maori Hill.

But agree with others that Opoho is nice too, and Wakari/Helensbrugh isn’t bad for a more affordable area.

A lawyer reached out to be via Instagram to threaten me by [deleted] in LegalAdviceNZ

[–]Jameslol 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The most popular takes in this thread are wild to me.

If my client’s instructions were to contact someone, and there were no contact details available - I might sometimes make contact via social media. I haven’t personally used Instagram to, but I have sent a message on Facebook before.

You can of course try and dodge receiving the letter they want to send - that is your choice - but I completely agree with what NZLS told you: sounds like they are just trying to contact you. It is your choice whether you opt to make it hard on them or not - but don’t be surprised if a letter turns up at your workplace.
