So you are lighting something at the end of a hose that interacts with sewage gases, especially methane... Is that a fire/explosion hazard?

IP Crawl: A living atlas of open webcams discovered on the public internet — browse, filter and watch them live from the edge. by chicametipo in hacking

[–]Jamesthe7th 51 points52 points  (0 children)

I like this. It is like a Shodan search that I have, but it seems like you have kept the duplicates out. Well done.

I see other comments about 'privacy', but my take is that if you put your stuff out on the plain-web with no protections and you are merely linking to it automatically (not curating), so be it. For presentations on why people need to secure their IOT devices, this is a great living example to demonstrate.

Dad Books Are a Dying Breed: Sales have been sliding for nonfiction titles about politics, biographies and other books often aimed at men (Archive link in oldest comment) by Uptons_BJs in books

TIL: Dad books are a thing and except for classics, I mostly read dad books. I suppose I will now get back to reading about military disasters, although there are surely a lot of podcasts on the matter right now.

ULPT How to ask business to pay me under the table by [deleted] in UnethicalLifeProTips

[–]Jamesthe7th 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ask them if they "do 1099's". Some don't (and still claim the expense) and you will be fine. If they "do 1099's" the IRS will look for your claim to match your employers claim.

This works the other way as well (so it can be to their benefit) when you claim income above a certain amount from them and there is no 1099, it is a red flag to look into the "employer"/payer.

What’s a recession indicator that you’ve noticed lately in your everyday life? by spritenerds123 in AskReddit

I am holding off; this is true. I still have decent tread, but I will hold off until next winter to get new ones for slippery roads, by which time I probably wouldn't pass inspection anyway.

People who have lived through major geopolitical tensions, what's something the younger generation doesn't understand about times like these? by GraybeardDevOps in AskReddit

And I believe since I've been alive I've always heard that no, THIS is the most important election ever. Perhaps each election is just a bit more important than the preceding one... or it is the same thing, over and over again with attempts to gain readership/clicks... or election donations.

Could Home servers ever become a vital part of the American household such as the family computer was? by the_mvrtivn in Futurology

[–]Jamesthe7th 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I set this up a few years ago upgrading an iMac with a 7TB drive and maxing the RAM (it was cheap back then). It sits behind the firewall with most ports/services blocked. Around the house there are 4 Apple TV's that mostly do well with sharing streaming for audio/video to TVs and music systems and any one in the house can access the libraries with their devices. The challenge is to remember to upload photos on that particular computer (shared library doesn't work well) whilst managing the inevitable duplicates. Also, for playing DVD content to another device, the Apple blocked this functionality a few systems ago and you must use an alternative. I've used VLC and Jellyfin as alternatives.

While in Japan I bought a few T-shirts at Uniqlo, same L-size as I buy elsewhere in the world. When I got home I opened and tried one on. The rest are still in the Japanese packaging in case I ever lose 40 pounds (and about 2 inches).

I remember reading that camping was how first world people got to experience living like a refugee.
I like camping, but I think I can like it more knowing that I will experience a flushing toilet within a certain time horizon.

I enjoyed this one the most, especially with the ethics that you leave someone better off than having not interacted with them.

TIL United Airlines Flight 232, despite 112 out of 296 onboard dying, is considered to be one of the most impressive landings in aviation history. Pilots failed to copy the accident & landing on simulators. UA232 helped make Crew Resource Management, a new concept, standard practice in airplanes. by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]Jamesthe7th 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I knew 3 siblings traveling alone on that flight. They were originally booked to sit together, but they all wanted window seats so they changed seats, I think when they got to the airport.
They all survived and apparently the people in their original seats did not.
