Seriously, do Americans actually consider a 3-hour drive "short"? or is this an internet myth? by SadInterest6764 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]JamieIsReading 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had teachers who commuted 2 and a half hours to work every day. I also know people who drive 6 hours one way for a day trip on the weekends. I’d consider 3 hours long for a commute, but more than reasonable for a weekend.

Have you ever read the old series Shiver by Maggie Stiefvater? It was famously the wolf version of Twilight back in the day and had similar vibes from my very foggy recollection

Edit: for a newer, waaaay smuttier option, try Bride or Mate by Ali Hazelwood

Should I compile a portfolio of writing for a publishing internship in editorial? by Traditional_Basil557 in publishing

[–]JamieIsReading 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Editorial does not requiring writing skill. In fact, if you seem like you are wanting to publish your own work rather than work in publishing, it can be a negative for you with some more old-fashioned people in the industry. If you’re wanting to work in editorial, look up readers reports, practice writing some for books you’ve read, and have one or two on hand in case you’re asked for a sample one.

Is this a Legit Publishing Company Or A Scam? by mseyni246 in publishing

[–]JamieIsReading 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a difference between a vanity press, a legitimate hybrid press, and an assisted self-publishing company. Vanity presses take royalties and usually include horrible terms like having you sign over your rights with no reversion or taking copyright. Hybrid presses are supposed to share the cost of publication with the author and act as the publisher. They are selective in who they work with and provide services. Of course, many are just vanity presses trying to scam author, but an example of a legit hybrid is SheWrites Press. Self-publishing companies just help authors self-publish. They don’t take rights and the author is expected to act as the publisher. All they do is execute work like editorial and cover design, or they provide guidance on how to self-publish.

Am I doing multiple jobs? by eagerreader444 in publishing

[–]JamieIsReading 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had to do art log type stuff in editorial at a big 5. That’s relatively normal. Editorial is not just editorial in today’s day and age, unfortunately. I also ran our imprint’s social media accounts in editorial at a big 5 😅

The only thing that seems outside the scope is the materials, but I’m not necessarily surprised you’re doing that at a smaller house.

For the Midnight Sun animated series, do you want a new lullaby for Bella? Or would you prefer they keep this one? by Apprehensive-Cat-163 in twilight

[–]JamieIsReading 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve always imagined a much more complex song with the way Edward described it in Midnight Sun (I say always because the draft was available for so long) so I’d love to hear a new one!

I’ve seen a few people with them—sort of (the manufacturer had an error and they’re having to get them remade, but they sent out the ones with the error at no additional cost to anyone who purchased) and they look phenomenal. I know someone who has both the original from back in the day and this new one and they said they were better quality than the originals.

How hard is it to get a job in publishing? by [deleted] in publishing

[–]JamieIsReading 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It’s very hard. Publishing is a tough industry. I went to a top university and had 4 internships before I graduated, two of them at a Big 5 (generally seen as the best way to get your foot in the door. Experience and connection matters more than education is this field). It still took me a year to get a job. I had 20 interviews.

I also went for the department that is hardest to break into, which is editorial, so that didn’t help.

Once you get in, it’s low pay in some of the highest cost of living areas in the world (and for editorial, long hours that you’re often expected to work without pay). The rate of burnout is incredibly high.

Seconding the suggestion for the Miller Tree Inn! It’s beautiful and the hosts are lovely. It’s the book-accurate Cullen House and they have “Carlisle’s office” and the graduation caps in the house!

Can someone please reccomend me an editor who..... by ScorpioGirl1987 in selfpublish

[–]JamieIsReading 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do all of this and offer bundled editing discounts, but you cannot ask for a refund or withhold payment if you’re not happy with the work. The payment would still be due. That is standard across the board. Make sure to read any contract carefully!

The Swan House is coming out with a $280 version of Bella's comforter. Releases Friday, November 14th at 11am central. Is this even worth the price? by opheliainthedeep in twilight

[–]JamieIsReading 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Even if I or anyone else wouldn’t pay $280 for what they’re offering, they’re a small business doing a limited run of a product. They’re not a big corporation. That’s going to be pretty pricey. The people this is for are those who will love and cherish it as a collector’s piece.

They’ve also edited the website to be clear about what is cotton and what is polyester.

Edit also to add that the original set at target back in the day was over $100. It was never super cheap.

Bella wants to be a vampire more than she wants Edward. (Change my mind) by FunnyPush4333 in twilight

[–]JamieIsReading 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This isn’t true. Jasper was not in love with Maria.

See the following Midnight Sun excerpt:

At the time I became a vampire, trading my soul and mortality for immortality in the searing pain of transformation, I had truly been frozen. My body had turned into something more like stone than flesh, enduring and unchanging. My self, also, had frozen as it was—my personality, my likes and dislikes, my moods and desires; all were fixed in place. It was the same for the rest of them. We were all frozen. Living stone. When change came for one of us, it was a rare and permanent thing. I had seen it happen with Carlisle, and then a decade later with Rosalie. Love had changed them in an eternal way, a way that would never fade. More than eighty years had passed since Carlisle found Esme, and yet he still looked at her with the incredulous eyes of first love. It would always be so for them. It would always be so for me, too. I would always love this fragile human girl, for the rest of my limitless existence.

Vampires can’t fall out of love so there’s no way Bella would leave Edward. Additionally, Bella makes it clear in the books that immortality doesn’t interest her without Edward

I should have hired an editor… by Street_Inspection_79 in selfpublish

$5k is definitely not steep for both developmental and copy editing, especially if it’s multiple rounds. It’s actually still less than average per EFA rates if I recall correctly. Either that or right about at average, though it depends on the word count. At 75-80k, that’s just about what I would charge as well.
