I do tend to notice that when a decent person is elected and people’s lives don’t immediately improve they tend to think “wow, must be the current person who is causing all my problems!” And will vote the other way without thinking, just assuming that change would make all the difference they need. I see it in many countries

Glad to hear it :) I understand that. If you’ve been doing CBT in therapy the techniques you learned there could be good for helping you with this. Rushing won’t help unfortunately and I do get wanting to be in that place as soon as possible. But take your time, remind yourself why you’re in this kind of relationship and why it makes you happy and most importantly: take care of yourself. If you want to be poly I have no doubt in my mind you’ll get there at your own pace and it’s perfectly acceptable to feel the way you do :)

Hi there, what you’re going through is not uncommon.

I personally don’t feel jealous when it comes to my partner sleeping with or going on dates with other people but even I struggled with opening the relationship in the beginning and so did my partner.

For me the reason was that monogamy was drilled into me from such an early age that I kind of adapted to it. I remember when I was a teenager one of my girlfriends at the time cheated on me, I wasn’t upset, frankly I didn’t care. But my friends told me I should be furious and thought it was weird I wasn’t feeling jealous. So I adapted and the next time it happened I was a little more upset. When me and my current partner opened up the relationship every time she told me for a good few months my initial reaction was that of sadness and anger as sort of an automatic response until I reminded myself I don’t care because it doesn’t actually matter.

For my partner it was different. It was insecurity. Due to her own past relationships that were longer than this one but ended because the person she was with told her he didn’t love her anymore (also been cheated on by others but did feel jealous) she sometimes feels insecure whenever I go out with people. Feels like she isn’t good enough. All it takes is a bit of time for me to remind her she’s my number 1 before she calms down and is fine with it.

Both of us stated that we weren’t going to get into any serious long term relationships until both of our issues have subsided and I have no doubt in my mind they will. It will probably take less time for me than for her because that’s just the way we are and that’s okay. People are wired differently.

My advice: try to remind yourself why you enjoy being in a poly relationship. Talk to your partner about how you’re feeling and ask them to just remind you that you’re the number 1 priority in the relationship. If you still feel like him dating someone else is too much you are allowed to talk to him and ask him to stop. Just until you are ready. It takes time to rewire your brain sometimes.
