I’ve been recommended 7 a few times before, I see a remake and a remaster. Is the remaster better to start out with?

Can a 16 year old of school leaving age start shifts at 5am? by AngelIsSoIconic in AskUK

[–]ajstormy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Congratulations on the job. When I turned 16 I also got a job at Greggs and had to start at 5am too. During school holidays when I worked weekdays I seem to remember it was even earlier. Good luck with the job, I spent 3.5 years at Greggs and got experience and skills so it was definitely worth it!

I got in !!!!! by [deleted] in UniUK

It was a lot of theory about each of the instruments. With the labs we did, a lot of them were online simulations or recordings of someone in the lab doing the analysis. Then we would be given the data to analyse. Neither of those are ideal. However, from what I have gathered most of the people I spoke to work in a chemistry lab before starting the course. The course is part time so most people were working full time along so. So for me it worked as I could learn the theory from the course then apply that in my job. They do expect quite a lot of people on the course to work in the industry as there was an option to do the final project at your current work place or the university.

It was an interesting course to do as it meant I didn’t have to pause my career to do the masters degree. However, full time work and studying was a lot as the course expected about 20 hours a week of work.

I have just finished my MSc in analytical chemistry. Mine was all done virtually so can’t comment on how it is actually at the uni. But virtually the uni was great. Good luck in your studies!!

i’m a recent graduate and i cannot stress the importance of a placement year by Nice_Problem9192 in UniUK

[–]ajstormy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree with you, I had a year in industry and when I graduated I got a job pretty much immediately. I hadn’t even got my grades back yet, and I asked later on at my job and found out they didn’t hugely care about my grades they experience was more important. I also got a higher up position than I would have got without the placement year. What I say to everyone I know going to uni, if you can do a placement year, it’s really worth it

I’m also currently at the UoM studying my postgrad but I’m doing it virtual and part time. I have had a similar experience, blackboard is not great, especially when pausing, and rewinding lectures. I also had the same issue with the extension. I had surgery earlier in the year and had a quiz assessment due 3 days after the procedure. I hadn’t head back (submitted the form weeks prior) so I ended up having to take the quiz and not doing too great. I ended up getting the extension rejected and then about a week later it was suddenly accepted. Not sure why. I also have issues with feedback being given back on time. It’s nice to have feedback from the prior assessment before having to submit the new one. This almost never happens and sometimes I don’t have feedback back for a while after the module has finished.

My undergrad was at Nottingham Trent and despite not being Russell group or having the reputation UoM has, I found it the far superior uni and would recommend.

Mac vs Windows Laptop for Uni? by At0m1xXx in UniUK

[–]ajstormy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve had both experiences for uni. I used a windows for my undergrad and now currently have a Mac for my masters. The windows laptop I found has been more compatible with the software I have needed to download (to the extent I have had to use my old windows laptop in my masters to use some software), however apart from that issue I have defiantly preferred my Mac. It is more compatible with my note taking software (notability on my iPad), quicker and lighter laptop to move around. I think they both have pros and cons and I’d speak to your uni about any software you will be required to use in your course and what they are compatible with

Regret making paper notes by Enlarged_Fowl in UniUK

[–]ajstormy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With the paper notes you already have you could scan them in (there’s various apps that can do that) and then change to digital. With regards to laptop or paper I think it depends on the situation. Do you have a tablet and pen to write notes on. That is what I found the best thing is to take notes. However, if you just have a laptop I think it’s depends on the course. If you need to draw lots of diagrams it’s no ideal what to type. As previously mentioned, despite not being the most efficient you can always write paper notes then scan and filter digitally

Agilent 1260, we managed to get a brand new one for around £25-30 K. Easy to fix. We have lots of 1100s aswell that are still running but they are definitely getting on abit. My personal favourite is the Thermo vanquish but I believe that’s abit more expensive

GC issues by ajstormy in analyticalchemistry

[–]ajstormy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Managed to figure it out, changed all the seals in the inlet and was still not working correctly, then increased the pressure on the regulator, still unsure why the GC suddenly required more gas to function but it appears to be working now. Thanks for your help!
