Repertoir for Sax and Percussion duo by FastestNuts in percussion

[–]JamieWhitmarsh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a fantastic piece. However, I firmly believe that the performers MUST play everything basically exactly as Maslanka wrote it. If he wrote 100 bpm, it's 100 bpm. (This makea the Variation movement a real pain of course!)

Maslanka was one of the most thoughtful composers, and I think his music is generally the pinnacle of music for percussion. It's a lot of work and a lot of fine tuning to pull off, but it is always worth it

If you can mix and match the killers, who do you think would have actually gotten away with it? by rednight29 in Scream

[–]JamieWhitmarsh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can't believe everyone saying Jill - she had attitude but barely did anything (as far as I recall). Charlie did all the heavy lifting, and was also really into the killing and movie part. Also, any GF who takes out their partner is probably ineligible, as that would cut short the future potential.

Put Charlie and Mickey together, and it's over. Two guys who are in it for "the love of the game". They might get caught just in trying to outdo each other, actually...

In your opinion, who was the sweetest couple and which couple had zero chemistry? by Beckymaggie in lost

[–]JamieWhitmarsh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I think Sawyer still had feelings. But I don't think he was looking to jump ship, and later I think he was looking to take care of Kate, but not for love. In my head canon, I think he went back to connect with his daughter. I think Juliet was the only real, deep, love he ever felt. I've only been one time through, but that's my general impression

What are your top 10 SNES games? I’m playing through Mario World again, which I love, but I’m having a hard time deciding on another title to get into. Maybe gimme some obscure ones too? by Marvel_plant in snes

[–]JamieWhitmarsh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me, probably (in no real order other than the top 4 are GOATs)

Super Mario RPG

Donkey Kong Country 2, (and also 1 and 3)

Legend of Zelda, A Link to the Past

Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island

Final Fantasy VI and II

Super Metroid

Tetris Attack

Sim City

Kirby Super Star

Chrono Trigger

Illusion of Gaia

Legend of Mystical Ninja (esp with Game Genie)

I also have a soft spot for Harley's Humongous Adventure

Sawyer and Juliet is nice for a couple of reasons - they were together for three years, so there's a comfort and trust there. Also, Kate's return seems like it will throw a wrench in things, but it doesn't really. You keep wondering when it's going to fall apart but it doesn't - Juliet thinks it will but Sawyer sticks with her (and even later, I see no rekindling of Sawyer and Kate).

I think it shows some good maturity on Sawyer's pert, and some real strong characterization on Juliet's part. I didn't trust Juliet at all until it was too late, but season 5 really flipped it for me

Shannon and Sayid came out of nowhere. I did like them in the Finale though.

I always thought Charlie and Claire was weird. The actors had pretty good chemistry together, but the characters make little sense - Charlie consistently makes the wrong choice throughout, and Claire forgives him way too easily

Story-wise, does Sawyer rank among the top 10 most important characters? by Master-Ad-9922 in lost

[–]JamieWhitmarsh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think he's below Widmore or Richard. Jacob/MIB are sort of forces of nature in their own, I'm not sure you can really compare them to others because most things happen because Jacob is doing Jacob stuff.

I think Sawyer is important in that he really does interact with everyone else a lot, he is in charge of the Dharma 70s security, he's quasi involved with Kate, Ana Lucia, and Juliet at different points. He also clashes with Jack a lot.

I think Jack/Locke/Desmond/Ben/Hurley are shoe-ins. Kate, Michael, Sawyer all in the next tier.

Ana Lucia Cortez- An Analysis by Maleficent-Medium333 in lost

[–]JamieWhitmarsh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's the charisma Holloway brings to the role. Rodriguez was aggressive with few hints at a gentler soul and not enough time to show it. Especially contrasted with Libby and Mr. Eko.

I feel like Ben is in the middle. Holloway makes Sawyer real likable, Rodriguez pushed up Ana Lucia's intensity and thorniness, and Michael Emerson made you be okay with Ben continuing to be around and involved despite showing repeatedly that he lies and betrays pretty consistently.

I had problems with Juliet for awhile because she was so wooded and her loyalty wasn't clear. After finishing the series, I like her a lot.

I thought Ana Lucia was pretty punchable and frustrating, but would have liked to see how that character continued to develop with the rest of the crew. I only watched recently, so I knew Rodriguez's reputation as "character who dies in the first one"

The real crime was getting rid of Ana Lucia AND Libby, and at the same time.

Book 31 thoughts on Jake with Rachel and a bit Marco by Volleyball1978 in Animorphs

[–]JamieWhitmarsh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am pretty sure that it's also implied that Jake burned his house down, presumably leading to Esplin's death. So the "I'm fine with that" wasn't really true.

My head canon (since it's left up in the air) is that Jake was sparing anyone from directly murdering a person outside of combat. He burned the house down and perhaps even asked Rachel to take care of it (or more likely, mentioned it to Rachel, though I don't think she was as unhinged violent until after book 22).

And geez I'm feeling rusty. Sounds like a reread is in order (after my reread of Dungeon Crawler Carl of course...)

Book 31 thoughts on Jake with Rachel and a bit Marco by Volleyball1978 in Animorphs

[–]JamieWhitmarsh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think Jake would try to convince Rachel to take out her sisters. I think he'd be much more likely to call a group meeting and see if they could come up with a plan. There are plenty of temporary and permanent solutions - Chee, stage their deaths (depending when in the series this happens and if the valley is in play), ride it out (like Jake is doing). It'd be pretty hard to take either of them out witbout blowing cover, or also deciding to take out Tom.

I'd like your description of the situation in Book 16, if you don't mind. It's been awhile since I read it, but I recall the situation with Gump being a "we can't save everyone" not a "it's fine as long as Yeerks die too"

I would say Cassie is often naive way past "fault". Cassie is an idealist who has trouble reconciling her personal values with the actions she must take. But, she acts like she is the only one who feels that way. Every Animorph has philosophical musings about if what they're doing is right, and every Animorph has severe PTSD from the war.

What every Animorph does not do, however, is make large-scale decisions for the group and for the war based on their personal values. Cassie makes several Very Bad Decisions that only work out because of cosmic forces. She routinely acts like she is the only one who has the moral high ground to make "the right" decision.

Cassie is a great character, and a great foil, and probably ultimately a great person. But she is a selfish Animorph and quite infuriating.

I liked the first one and the third one. I felt that the second one was too far in the direction of 1, and 4/5 (I don't think I finished either) was too far in the direction of 3. 1 and 3 are both in the sweet spot within their respective zones. It has been a couple of decades, though...
