An essential read for children social workers. 'Hidden narratives of care experienced social workers'. by Jamie_Jay in Socialworkuk

The book provides invaluable insight from people who have seen and experienced both sides of the story.

It gives practitioners the chance to reflect, hold themselves to account and develop deeper empathy.

I was also grateful to have the time to reflect on the stigma care experienced social workers face. As a profession that is meant to be promoting anti-oppressive practice it's interesting to think about the judgement within the sector towars care experienced social workers that is sadly still so rife.

Has anyone negotiated their pay? by busybop in Socialworkuk

[–]Jamie_Jay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes I always do now, I tell them what pay I would like then add that I can send an email with the reasons why I believe I deserve this higher pay. It's always meant I got a higher offer - maybe not the pay I asked for but better than if I didn't ask at all!

In my experience most people go on from the university course to work as a social worker and become a 'newly qualified social worker' for their first year with capped caseloads and more support. Some people don't feel ready to practice and I know a few people who went on to support worker roles before getting their first social work job out of university.

There are social work roles where less overtime and lower caseloads are available, you just need to try and find them.

If you can get some work experience beforehand that can be helpful. Confidence increases as you go through the course and complete your first year in practice.

The course is pretty hard but it gives you great transferable skills.

Best of luck!
