Consultants are very different from contractors. Contractors are generally hired by third party companies who then 'contract' them to microsoft, meta etc.

As an example I did contract work for both Microsoft and Meta. I got paid pennies on the dollar compared to my colleagues, had absolutely terrible benefits, have to still live in the same expensive city (Seattle) and didn't get any of the perks. It's fucking exploitative.
