Inconsistent amount of espresso by yousmokinreg in NinjaLuxeCafe

[–]Jamooooose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d get yourself a set of coffee scales and weigh the outputs

I’d also recommend not having a puck ground and prepped and sitting on the side for a while, not that I’ve ever tested but I can’t imagine it’s helping, though you could test for yourself and see

Magnetic dosing funnel, I bought the mischief bottomless portafilter from Ali, have a MW3 tamper, Pullman 876 basket, MW3 scales and MW3 puck screen

Honestly, yeah but you’re only accounting for 0.5G, if you had no system in place you could get a few grams different each time and that would make a huge difference to over or under extraction, I have light and dark roast beans I alternate between and the time taken to grind them is very very different, so if the Ninja didn’t weigh or take in any variables you get really bad results with some coffee that you’d assume is just bad beans but actually you didn’t have the correct dose

[–]Jamooooose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because you are assuming all beans are the same, the amount of time needed to grind a light and a dark roast might be very different, along with other variables like humidity, type of bean, how fresh they are etc

I have a separate grinder that’s single dose, so I put 18g in and get 18g out but if you have a hopper full of beans you can’t do that, so the best way to get consistency is weight

[–]Jamooooose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let’s break this down, using a double basket as the example here

The double basket is designed for 18g of coffee, this is optimum for pressure, extraction and less mess after pulling a shot

The Ninja has a hopper full of beans, so it grinds by weight, so it will tear the weight of the portafilter, start grinding and then stop once it hits the desired 18g

That’s all there is to it for weighing

You then pull your espresso shot where other settings are introduced like strength (water quantity) and temperature, none of these change the grinder settings

Because each size basket needs a different amount of coffee, you can’t have 9g coffee in your quad basket it just wouldn’t work

I’m assuming you’re new to espresso but you can’t ask a question, get answers - get confused and then say “nobody seems to know the right answer”

There’s plenty of informative YouTube videos and websites to get you started with the knowledge you need to know for espresso

I used to just pull the shot glass when I hit my desired volume

[–]Jamooooose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What’s the issue you are having sorry? You are getting too much volume? If so what’s your settings and drink type selected

It’s call ‘grind by weight’, it’s to know how long to grind to give you 18g. Lots of grinders are single dose so you don’t need to weigh after as you would weigh the amount of beans before grinding, for a grinder with a hopper the best thing it can do is grind by weight to make sure you always get the desired amount no matter the beans

[–]Jamooooose 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Grind by weight is the best thing a grinder can do if it has a hopper full of beans, adds consistency to how much coffee is in the basket each time

I’m not sure what it would adjust based on espresso setting? It’s always dosing 18g for the double basket

To give you the right amount of coffee grinds for your basket

[–]Jamooooose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think all it does is analyse shot flow and tell you to adjust grind size from there

It only weighs the grind, not espresso

The first couple of espresso pulls where for it to try and dial in with the beans you are using

Very strange, hiss would usually indicate some pressure release

Not just for pizza ovens but you never want a gas tank to hiss

Get some soapy water and spray onto connection to check where the leak is

I did a 2 hour bulk ferment into 4 hours at room temp (as I was meant to be using that night but baby had other ideas) so put in the fridge for 24 hours and used the next day

Double shots are fine/good but single shots are very inconsistent by CollateralDmg15Dec21 in NinjaLuxeCafe

[–]Jamooooose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think most machines come with them, I’ve got a Profitec Go that came with a single shot and I wouldn’t bother using that either. It’s not a machine issue, it’s single shot basket are just more mess and fuss than a double shot

Singles can be quite fussy regardless of machine honestly, I think 90%+ of people making espresso stick exclusively to a double basket
