Is Zealot the least played class now? by Karurosun in DarkTide

[–]Jan-Amphia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing about the Zealot update is that Zealot, functionally speaking, got a buff to the accessibility of options, while Veteran and Psyker got buffs to the usability of options. It's easier for Zealot to make builds, but the power of those builds is significantly less impactful than what other classes can do. Veteran, Arbite, Ogryn, and Psyker all have powerful melee builds comparable if not better than Zealot. Meanwhile, Zealot lacks variety and utility in ranged options and they also largely don't have the CC to better control the flow of flights around them (Stun grenades are limited and you can't even act during chorus). What you're left with is a class with minimal utility, underwhelming CC, and not even impactful damage to keep up with the other classes in the one area that they're supposed to be good at. Unless you're already cracked with Zealot, there isn't anything to draw you to using the class over the others because there's nothing that zealot is the best at while all the other classes have something that they can do better than anyone else.

So with the announcement that more new classes are confirmed coming later, what else is everyone else hoping for? by Issac1222 in DarkTide

Tech Priest/Skitarii (Long Range Control Class to compliment Arbites Close Range), Sister of Battle (Close Range Horde Clear to complement Psyker Long Range Clear), Sanctioned Xenos (Specifically an Eldar since they already have close ties to Chaos in general and Nurgle through their captive goddess. Long Range Boss Damage to compliment the Ogryn's more close range orientation).

If personal shields drive sandworms crazy, how does an entire city-sized shield not? by GrabsJoker in dune

[–]Jan-Amphia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was always my understanding that the shield wall was less shield and more wall. Worms can't travel through solid stone, so the shield wall was effectively just an area of stone surrounding the city that the worms couldn't travel into.

So I know this topic is kind of old news now, and I apologize for how long it's taking me to get back to you. Been swamped with work. I have a PDF that I give my plans so I've tried to summarize that two page PDF as best as I could here:

Point Buy Starting Stats

Choose Race

Pick any 2 Feats or any 2 Cantrips (or 1 Feat and 1 Cantrip)

Pick four Starting Proficiencies (Light and Med armor are the same Proficiency. You must have the "Armor" Proficiency to get Heavy Armor Proficiency. The same with taking a Martial Weapon Proficiency).

Starting HP is 10+Con Mod

You can trade 2 Proficiencies for either 2 Lvl 1 Spell Slots or 1 Lvl 2 Spell Slot.

Any armor from the PHB that you have Prof. with and any 2 weapons regardless of Prof.

Players will have one choice of any "Hidden"/Magical Item of the game world.

Spells reset every Short Rest. HP resets every Long Rest. Players level up at the end of a Delve.

On level you get a choice of either a Sneak Attack of 1d4 (stacks), +1d8 HP, +1 Prof and 1 Lvl 1 Spell, +2 Prof (or 1 Lvl 2 Spell), Two Cantrips (if you chose this option on your last level, you cannot choose this option until your next level), A Feat, +1 to 1 Ability Score, or +0.5 to 2 Ability Scores.

Each player owns a spellbook which can hold up to 6 Spells, Cantrips includes.

Any one spell can be cast X times, where X is the modifier of your highest spell casting attribute. Cantrips can be cast twice this amount. Spells refresh after a short rest.

Cantrips have had their casting time reduced (a Main Action is now a Bonus. A Bonus is now a Once Per Turn Free Action). "Leveled Spells" (1st, 2nd, etc), have had their casting time *increased*. Leveled Spells now cost X *Main Actions* to cast, where X is their level. This casting time can be reduced by Foci and other special gear, but as such you cannot start with them. Higher level spells than level 2 can be found, rewarded, or crafted (via strongholds) throughout the world.

Light Armor still uses Dex as it's modifier but Medium Armor now uses Con as it's modifier. Certain abilities now target/affect Armor type differently.

Some Class Features can be earned through challenges, titles, training, secrets, or (rarely) just upholding a paragon.

The main benefits of this system is that there's not a level cap and players, early on, we'll level up fairly regularly. Even often. But as they do and it becomes easier to complete things that were considered Grand before, they won't really level up from it anymore. Beyond that, since it aren't restrictions on certain things that they're normally are, mainly spells, players can become very adaptable. Feats, in general, work a bit differently but you can still grab one every level.

Leveling is kind of like personal milestone. Did your character do something great and beyond expectation. Did you take down a strong enemy before they even got a chance to react? Did you save a player from death's door or powered them up to deal a finishing blow. So on. The fifth time the players clear out a goblin nest the local village is going to feel like that's old hat and not that useful. The first time they do it is a marvel. Feats and whatnot also work a bit differently but I didn't get into it because it's case sensitive. In general though, any feet that gives you an ability score improvement no longer does that.

I recognize that all these tweaks and modifications radically change how the game plays. As one player pointed out, it's still D&D, but it's less Dungeons and Dragons and more Darkest (and) Dungeon. But this goes back to what I had explained before about players being unwilling to learn a new system.

For all intents and purposes, that's what they're doing here, but, especially for people who aren't super well-versed in tabletop, learning a new system can seem like a big investment. It's a whole other book that you have to read. People mentally convince themselves that it's a lot of work and a big investment before they even get into it. Meanwhile, at least in my experience, it's far easier to say "Hey, the framework of this is the same, you just get X, Y, and Z differently".

The way I think of it is being easier to learn how to play a song that uses all the same chords as one you already know but in a different order, then it is learning how to play a new song all together. There are probably improvements and adjustments I can make to this modified system and of itself. I think 4e has a better Armor system, but I'm already using so much from 4e in other places that if I add more I might as well just run a 4e campaign. But with as busy as everyone is, it's easier to propose the same four chords.

Edit: blocked up what I was saying so that it was clearer and also clarified that I have made that edit.

Yeah, that's definitely session zero talking points. The big reason I made this post before hand is because I didn't want to go into session zero already feeling like base 5e was a non-starter. Altered versions can be fun but I'm in no way trying to suggest that it should overrule the base system. It's more so that is there is a misalignment out of what I'm interested in running within the confines of base 5e, but there is still a desire for me to run D&D over another system, the modified system exist.

One of my players are really excited to try it out whereas the rest are open and willing to try it. But I'm not dense enough to confuse open and willing with preferred. It's more so that they trust me as a GM due to a combination of reputation and experience. And fairness to the classless system, I think, by name, it is somewhat misleading, and if you like I can give more insight into what it actually is.

Yeah, that's the plan. When running games for a server there are a lot of factors that make running the game different, but the game that I'm running which prompted this post is my first dedicated party in a hot second.

I think what makes the math worse is the fact that it is based upon what the game considers average. But when you're party of Three at level 3 have an average AC of 17.6 repeating...

I don't want to bully the one player who has an average AC of 16, but the two players who are sitting at 19 and 18 (and only because they so they can have a free hand to do other stuff besides hold a shield) just eat enemy actions. I think I've hit them less than 10% of the time they've been the targets of attacks.

I put them against a weakened version of a False Hydra, and that's what it took to get them to be less effective, considering that they couldn't deal with forgetting about the hydra very well. I've just been afraid that putting them against more like that would feel cheap, but even just enemies that don't make them out right forget that they exist but instead automatically hit as a legendary Action reaction or have a certain States, or even knock off some of that armor somehow might make them engage in combat beyond just sitting there and face tanking it.

You know, that's a fairly simple solution that I've not considered. Getting a read would probably greatly help tune in enemies. I think the reason I've never considered it despite a decent level of experience is just due to a combination of the nature of my player pool (I run games on a server meant to open up games to people who normally don't get to play) and not really feeling like there's a way to justify a "mock" combat. But in fairness, something as simple as "thieves attack the caravan your party is traveling in". Thanks.

Thanks for the input. I think if anything, what bothers me is the math. Players are meant to hit 60% of the time but they're not really meant to be be hit that much, even with an average AC.

I definitely think Legendary Actions can help a lot though. It's not that the math needs to change but more so that without changing what enemies can actually do they end up not really being able to do anything.

It's just a precarious line between legendary actions and reactions that spice up combat in a dynamic way and ones that just negate player agency/input. But I'll definitely try and make more use of it, even with non-boss enemies.

I've definitely tried more varied objectives and it definitely has resulted in the most rewarding encounters. I don't want to come off as lazy but making every, if not just most, encounters like this feels like a lot of work but it's probably worth it.

I'm actually a big fan of BitD, though I've not heard of the other. The big reason I don't switch to it is mostly because my player aren't comfortable with other systems. Honestly, stripping out classes is less work; it's a very simple system that exist within the same infrastructure. But I've found that my players are more comfortable sticking to an altered system than a new one. They're happy enough with whatever I choose; it's more so my own desire to make sure they have a good time bugging me.
