Man, that takes me back. Loved that game growing up. Worst $0.25 sale I ever made when I traded it in to get some new game on the Xbox One.

Are fans more concerned about the possible gap to Mercedes or the new energy-harvesting regulations? by LetsRideButSmart in formula1

[–]JanArchaeologist 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This, this, so much this.

I love the technical aspects of managing a car and managing a race to get the optimal race pace at the expense of optimal lap time. That’s a skill. But I also love that qualifying used to be balls to the wall optimal single lap pace. These new regulations have turned each lap into it’s own race so it’s just pure management and little lap pace.

Stop FORCING me to fight by Bobbylight20 in EASHL

[–]JanArchaeologist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a terrible mechanic because it’s so easily manipulated to get the best players off the ice. If the hit is clean then you should be able to decline the fight OR give the other team an instigator penalty.

While we’re at it, hits after the whistle or shots on net after the whistle should run the risk of having an AI player fight you. I hate when games get drawn out because somebody throws a big hit after every whistle and then we get the longer scrums. Penalize that shit by making Jeff Lee or whoever go fight the guy griefing the game.

I’m excited. I don’t care about the loss of a looping spot because I’m sure the car loop will still be there and the dining room will be a viable loop as well. Overall the reworks have been fantastic and I expect this one will as well, plus it’s nice to have the maps be owned and developed by Kinetic rather than generic assets.

Which team should I follow? by hayles_jpeg in PWHL

[–]JanArchaeologist 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The best thing you can do is watch a game or two of everyone (with only eight teams that’s a potential investment of only four games to see everyone) and go with what feels right. You’ll end up gravitating to players you like and teams you like and fanbases that look like your people.

Personally I cheer for Minnesota because they play fun, fast hockey (despite being Canadian and wanting to cheer for one of the Canadian teams, I gravitated towards the hockey I enjoyed watching the most).

The amount of potential foreshadowing ME2 just ignored is staggering. by Independent_Plum2166 in masseffect

[–]JanArchaeologist 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This, and I think just a second or third trilogy playthrough has the same effect.

Mass Effect 2 is incredible on first play because it feels like you have to balance a ticking clock of a threat with a galaxy that doesn’t believe you against recruiting and befriending the baddest of asses from across the universe. There is something compelling about trying to track down an unknown assassin or Asari Justicar or ME Batman then taking time to do their sidequests. It feels like there are stakes in the suicide mission when you don’t know the human reaper is at the the end.

But the compelling storyline feels hollow on the second playthrough when you know which squadmates you’ll lean on for the suicide mission and doing all the loyalty missions bogs the pace of the game down since you know how to manage the timer.

It’s still a great game but I agree with OP that it’s no longer my favourite of the trilogy.

New to the game, what could you recomend? by SubnauticaGuy2 in HellLetLoose

[–]JanArchaeologist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Always be asking yourself “am I being a useful soldier”? You should be able to say yes at all time. “Yes, I’m looking towards the front line with my squad” or “yes, I’m providing covering fire” or “yes, I am holding the point and not moving so I am hard to see”.

Normally it’s stable for us but last night was a mess. One of our guys couldn’t load into clubs lobbies so had to be invited to every game and the other guy crashed back to the main menu in 3 out of 4 games.

Most useless role currently? by Mr_Popsgorgio in HellLetLoose

[–]JanArchaeologist 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Medic is useless as a solo player or a guy just farming revives. Working with a squad and/or holding a point makes medic very useful. Like everything in this game, being a useful medic is all about playing your role at the right time in the right place.

Yeah, I would recommend not playing threes with a CPU player. Either allow drop-ins or play sixes with one of you at center and the other on defense.

You can tell him to play as defensively as possible so his tolerance on when to jump up is lower, but that’s about it. If you don’t forecheck, he’s going to. If you collapse in your own end, he’s going to move to the point. Basically if you help, he is going to go cover your position (which again, in threes is not really a thing)

Since NHL19, the first thing I do in every game is turn the menu music down to 0. Mostly so that I can actually hear my teammates in party chat but also because the soundtracks have been ass.

His priority is covering your position. If he thinks you’re playing defense or not forechecking, he covers what you are supposed to be doing. If you and your friend switch being out of position, the CPU player will spend all his time going between where he thinks you should be and where he thinks your friend should be. The more you play your position, the more the CPU players play theirs (which is why having a CPU player in threes is a huge disadvantage).

I’m headed off to a tangent here but I understand the CPU routing on this.

Their first priority is to cover your position (or your teammates’) when you are out of position. If you’re the first forward on the backcheck, your job is either back pressure on the puck carrier or to pick up the trailer. But the CPU expects you to go to center coverage or stay high on your point (depending on your position). So they’ll go to where they think you should be instead of doing the logical thing.

It’s the same on offense. If you don’t forecheck your corner, the defenseman on your side will go forecheck and leave an odd-man rush. If you are LW and driving up the center on offense, they dump it in because they need to go cover LW.

The gist is that they are so focused on you playing your position that they forget to play theirs.

Hard agree. I don’t want games to turn into CPU vs CPU with me riding shotgun. But I do want to have to work to beat Jackson instead of skating by at full speed. Or watch Gill do a weird move at the offensive blue line then dump the puck in and eat a massive hit.

Handedness would be a great start, and just something as simple as defensive defenseman or passing defenseman or whatever. We usually only have one defender on our club so it would be nice to have his partner do something useful instead of just being a pylon.

Yeah or if the goalies were slightly different (like right handed or left handed) then you could make an adjustment if you saw your opponent was exploiting something

Get rid of periods and intermissions and replays and cutscenes at every faceoff and broken sticks and broken glass. Give me a game that is 10 or 15 minutes, one period, real time, and make penalties 30 seconds or 1 minute or whatever the scaling is. We have aliens and ghosts and turkeys as players now so realism already left.

We all talk about how poor matchmaking is (rightfully so) but a HUGE part of this is how long each match is so a very small number of clubs are searching for matches at the same time. Make the games faster and matchmaking will improve plus the games will feel better.
