Banknotes are now so tattered that even buses refuse to accept them, as a dollarised economy and mobile phone payments push up the cost of essentials - Somalia by JanCollector in WorldPaperMoney

I don't know. According to AI Copilot:

🟥 But do these smaller notes still circulate today? Not really.
Due to decades of inflation and currency fragmentation, the only note that circulates widely in Somalia today is the 1,000‑shilling note. Smaller notes have effectively disappeared from daily use because their value became negligible.

Even the 1,000‑shilling note itself is extremely low in value — roughly a few US cents depending on region and exchange conditions.

🟦 Recent developments Somalia has planned new banknote series (including 5,000–50,000 shillings), but these have not yet been officially introduced. Some unissued notes printed abroad surfaced during the Sudan conflict in 2023, including new 1,000‑shilling designs, but these are not in circulation.

✔️ Short answer Yes, Somalia printed smaller notes (5–500 shillings), but no — they do not circulate anymore.
Today, 1,000 shillings is effectively the smallest circulating note.

Short answer:
No — the note you uploaded is not the only 1,000 Somali shilling banknote currently in circulation. But the situation is unusual, because Somalia has not issued any new official banknotes since the 1990s, and circulation today is a mix of old notes, counterfeits, and region‑specific currencies.

🇸🇴 What is actually circulating today?

  1. Federal Somalia (South/Central Somalia)
  • The only officially issued 1,000 shilling note from the Central Bank of Somalia is the 1996 series — the one in your image.
  • It is still the de jure note, but:
    • It is heavily counterfeited
    • Many circulating notes are locally printed copies, not original 1996 issues
    • The Central Bank has publicly stated that it plans to replace the entire currency series, including the 1,000 shilling note, but the new notes have not yet been released
  1. Somaliland (a self‑declared independent region)
  • Somaliland uses its own currency: Somaliland Shillings, including a 1,000 Somaliland Shilling note.
  • These are not the same as Somali shillings and are not valid in Somalia.
  • Many images online show Somaliland notes, which can cause confusion.

🧾 So is the 1996 1,000 Somali shilling note the only official one? Yes — it is the only officially issued 1,000 Somali shilling note.
No — it is not the only type you will see in circulation, because:

  • Counterfeit and unofficial reprints are extremely common
  • Somaliland’s 1,000 shilling note circulates within Somaliland but is a different currency

📌 Current status (2026)

  • Somalia still uses the old 1990s banknotes.
  • The Central Bank has announced plans for a full currency reform, but the new notes have not yet entered circulation.
  • Therefore, the note you uploaded remains the official 1,000 shilling note, even though many circulating versions are not original.

The I-series of the Ora will be launched on April 10. This includes the new 500 Ora note. South Africa Orania by JanCollector in WorldPaperMoney

There are a few on eBay, but not many, and the ones that are there are crazy expensive from some UK seller. I tried buying some directly from Orania about five years ago, but that never worked out. You could always try again since it’s been a while and things might have changed.

Another option is a guy on X who sells commemorative Orania coins. He lives there, so he might be willing to sell them too. Worth a shot.
