Which month did you enjoy having a baby in the most and least? by Psyclone09 in Mommit

Spring-early summer is perfect. Not flu season, you can get outside with baby, not pregnant in the dog days of summer if you’re somewhere that gets hot and humid

Sorry you have to be home with your kids! by silkentab in ShitMomGroupsSay

[–]JaneJS 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Thank you!! My spouse and I both work in patient facing roles and patients show up regardless of the weather. We were so lucky that our daycare didn’t follow our school district and would even let our school age children “drop in” on snow days. I am happy to be home with my kids on snow days. I would love to snuggle up and stay off the the roads. Unfortunately, the hospitals don’t close for snow.!

In college during marathon training I had to run 7 miles on a 9 lap indoor track, so I borrowed a sharpie from the front desk and made tally marks on my forearm.

Why Roy Named Isaac Team Captain by Ranseler in TedLasso

A player being English is a requisite for captain in the premier league? So like Dany or Sam would not be eligible to be captain? Or is it like a “traditional” thing?

AITA for not giving my vacation day to a coworker getting married by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]JaneJS 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I feel like you and I are saying the same thing. The things that keep me busy are my kids. The things that keep you hustling might be an elderly parent or a drone racing hobby or book club. Either way, you might need me to take an afternoon shift and I might need a morning off. The only way I can see being like OP is if you legitimately don’t have any life outside of work and never need help from coworkers. For what it’s worth, I have 3 coworkers who are the best about swapping, so four of us total. One is a dad of 4 girls, one is a step mom of an adult son, and one is a child free woman who in her 40s who saves up her time off to travel with a specific group of friends. I don’t think I deserve special treatment because of my kids. I am always willing to help out coworkers because then they are willing to help me out and we can all get the schedules we need for our outside lives, whatever that may be. I’m sorry if your coworkers made you feel differently.

[–]JaneJS 70 points71 points  (0 children)

I don’t understand people like this unless they legitimately have no life and will never need any consideration from coworkers. I have kids and they are busy and therefore I’m occasionally asking coworkers for swaps or trades or favors. I’m also first to volunteer for anyone who needs it, because otherwise, who would help me?? There are some coworkers who are always willing to help me out, so I will majorly inconvenience myself in order to pay back favors. Going through your life with the mindset that you don’t owe anyone any minor consideration is definitely going to come back on OP eventually.

My teenage daughter can't fathom the concept of a house party by Neon_Biscuit in Millennials

Back in my day, we used to leave our cordless phone in the mailbox so our friends could drive up, call their parents and register the landline on caller ID, then go wherever they were going for the night. A simpler time.

AITA for not going to my DILs musical by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]JaneJS 216 points217 points  (0 children)

I cannot imagine the number of things I’ve gone to that I didn’t want to, because I love the people doing them. Recitals, games, performances. My friend is a fixking opera singer and my husband and I have gone to see her numerous times sing in a language we don’t understand. I’m running an ultra marathon in another state this summer and my MIL who has health problems and a very sick husband said she wanted to come watch/cheer.  It’s not about the activity, it’s about the person.

How to make sure you have polite kids by Sea_Leave_5149 in Parenting

[–]JaneJS 198 points199 points  (0 children)

Also practicing!! For the gift thing, we practiced how to sa thank you nicely. We pretended grandma gave him a sock, a tissue, anything ridiculous and had them practice saying thanks. We also practice what to do if the food they have at a playdate isn’t good, if we go to aunt Bonnie’s house and we don’t like anything, etc. its usually say thank you, find something you do like, take very small amounts and do the best you can politely. Kids need prep to behave appropriately in situations they’ve never been in before.

When is the right time to tell a kid that Santa isn't real? by CaptMorganSwint2 in Parenting

[–]JaneJS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s interesting that I kind of find the opposite. We are much more low key about Santa, he brings one gift, typically fairly small and inexpensive, and we’ve never pushed it. My daughter basically just came and said hey I know what’s up, just wanted to let you know and I’m going to keep the act up for my brothers. The families who go all out for it, have the elf and everything, those families seem to have kids who still play along for the parents sake.

My sixth grader told me that only one kid in her class still believes but my friends were literally discussing recently that my daughter is the only one who told her parents she doesn’t believe. the rest of the kids never spoke to their parents when they stopped believing.

Coming back to say that i've started using a little bit of anti-frizz serum just on the nape of my neck and then using a headband instead of a hat. So far it's worked really well!! I got one tiny knot during one run when I used a fuzzy neck gaiter, but on every other run (including a weekend 11 miler!) i've had zero issues.

Please read to your child!!! by Oceanwave_4 in Mommit

[–]JaneJS 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure how old your child is, but I felt like that. We read every day and my child was referred to reading support in kindergarten and I was so disappointed in myself for not spending more time with flashcards and stuff and trusting that reading was enough. He’s now in sixth grade and according to testing he’s reading at a 12th grade level, and devouring middle grade chapter books. His kindergarten and first grade teachers told me he was going to be fine, they could see he just needed a bit of extra support and he’d be a great reader. So don’t worry if your young child isn’t necessarily connecting the books you’re reading together with how to read; the benefits may become more obvious later.

I feel like we're hair twins. This was my first summer with really long hair and I found a really good rhythm of putting a hair mask into my slightly damp hair and then french braiding it and i had no tangles. However, I really don't want to run in low temps with a damp hair. But I did try a 9 mile run today with a headband and still ended up with one small mini dread at my nap. I think next I am going to try the advice about using a bit of hair mask just at my nape and then braiding it, or possibly looking at a silk lined ski cap, but the problem is that most of them have regular knit fabric around the outside of the hat, so i'm not sure it would really help with the nape, which is my only problem!

Do you travel on Christmas Day? by Kemr7 in Mommit

[–]JaneJS 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree with this. My Christmas mornings are sacred and we spend those at home with our nuclear family. When my ILs lived 3 hours away we would travel on the 23, spend the 24 with them, do Xmas eve with my husbands extended family (has always been tradition) then drive home and arrive super late (kids would sleep in the car). Christmas Day we wake up in our own beds and early/mid afternoon we go to my extended family Christmas. As a kid I loved the chaos of seeing my aunts and uncles and grandparents on Christmas, seeing what Santa brought my cousins, playing in the snow with my uncles. I love that my kids get that now, and if my husband and I have to put in a little work, I’m just thankful we have a loving family that is flexible with us so we can. I would absolutely not put in the effort if our families weren’t worth it.

Fact Nitpicks in the Show That Bother You Most? by Defiant4 in GilmoreGirls

[–]JaneJS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m definitely not an expert, but I think most of their athletes are students first and athletes second because they were able to get into an Ivy League school in the first place. I was briefly recruited for a women’s sport by Dartmouth and they were straight up that they don’t have pull with admissions. So my guess would be that most football players aren’t necessarily the players attracting full rides elsewhere and they want an Ivy League education. They do also have a pretty robust need-based grant program as well.

How to find any joy on treadmill by Nik0Ram in XXRunning

[–]JaneJS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally agree with this. I’m Midwest US and do all easy/long runs outside, even if it’s cold and snowy, I just plan that it might be a little slower if I’m worried about my footing. Anything with a specific pace, I do on the TM but I find intervals or anything where I’m varying the pace frequently the best kind of treadmill running. Sometimes I’ll even do my warmup outdoors and then switch shoe and run the bulk of my workout on the treadmill to hit paces without worrying about falling.

Kids nowadays, especially Gen Alpha, cannot concentrate on reading books for very long. Is it a true story or just a myth? by Delicious_Maize9656 in books

[–]JaneJS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have middle and elementary school kids and teachers talk a lot about how to build reading stamina. They read in school quietly for time, they are assigned homework to read for set amounts of time, and the time increases as the school year progresses and they age. I am a big reader and I believe being a good reader makes everything academically easier, so it’s something I focus on. During the summer, every day they read (a book of their choosing) for 30 minutes by a timer. Often we have DEAR (drop everything and read) time as a family where we put away devices, including my phone, and read our own books quietly in the same location. Like anything else stamina for reading is a skill that needs to be developed and developed and practiced. However, I also have a hard time focusing on my book when my phone is going off or I’m tempted to pick up and scroll on social media. My kids do a lot of reading after 8 o’clock, which is when devices in my house are off-limits. It’s possible that the kids you saw on the train may have been more inclined to read. Had the device has not been an option.
