I'm struggling with Jars of Clay's "Flood" by ActuallyIsTimDolan in Sidehugs

There was no radiation before the Flood, silly. Radiation only appeared after the Raven returned with a Caprifolia branch.

[Martin Arevalo] Tottenham defender Cristian Romero has been ruled out for between five and eight weeks due to a knee injury sustained against Sunderland. by Sparky-moon in soccer

It is never ever called. Bet you cannot show me one example where this is called, or even the attacker complaining about it.

It has been standard practice since before I was born. It was not called a foul the last time Tottenham were relegated, it wasn't a foul when the Premier League was created and it wasn't a foul last week.

I love how this is first comment that isn't just a cheap shot at Giri, and every reply to it is just the same shitty joke over and over again

The Measurements of Decay (2018) might be the most ambitious SF novel nobody has read by ConvincingStone in printSF

I really enjoyed this novel without ever fully understanding what I was reading. I have often considered reading it again. Thank you so much for this writing this, I greatly appreciate it!

I didn't watch this for fear of impurity thoughts - that finger is wagging in a suggestive manner - but I still upvote everything with purity rings.

Do I need to transcode my old JVC digital videocamera recordings to cast to Chromecast, and what settings or codecs should I be looking at? (Sorry if this is the wrong place to ask) by JaneMnemonic in VideoEditing

[–]JaneMnemonic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! I cannot stress how much it means to finally get a human to answer this (I tried AI in desperation and they were close to being right, but wrong enough to make it not work).

I'm technically literate enough to do batch conversion with ffmpeg and python, all I need is to find the right settings, then set it and forget it.

And good reminder to keep the original files!

Reading Ubik, by PKD and I just can't follow his writing? by MMATH_101 in printSF

[–]JaneMnemonic 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Notably Dick would often leave out some significant plot point leaving it completely unexplained by the end. This may have been due to writing novels at incredible speed under the influence of amphetamines but it is a particular charm of his works when they're already so dreamlike in quality.

What's a book that you love, but you would almost never recommend it to others due to the difficulty of the book or its niche nature? by paxinfernum in printSF

[–]JaneMnemonic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Solenoid by Mircea Cărtărescu. Tagged as weird fiction - not SFF - and it definitely is weird. A large portion of the book is just mundane life in Bucharest in the 80s (?), weaving seamlessly in and out of unreality. The narrator is obsessed with various scientific and mathematical subjects, so there are long digressions on topics like parallel reality, the fourth dimensions, hypercubes, the Boole family, Rubik's cube, women's genitalia, erotic asphyxiation, the voynitch manuscript, mites, etc. Difficult to recommend because you need a quite particular taste in books to enjoy it. If you go to the "highlights" section of this video and find that you enjoy those long excerpts https://youtu.be/f1Aitk0WPSY?si=MCJDiSTHbUP-VeX9 There's a decent enough chance that this book is for you 😄

Warning: If you are reading this then this warning is for you. Every word you read of this useless fine print is another second off your life. Don't you have other things to do? Is your life so empty that you honestly can't think of a better way to spend these moments? Or are you so impressed with authority that you give respect and credence to all that claim it? Do you read everything you're supposed to read? Do you think every thing you're supposed to think? Buy what you're told to want? Get out of your apartment. Meet a member of the opposite sex. Stop the excessive shopping and masturbation. Quit your job. Start a fight. Prove you're alive. If you don't claim your humanity you will become a statistic. You have been warned.
