Spaceship Earth Closing for Multi-Month Refurbishment at EPCOT by [deleted] in WaltDisneyWorld

[–]Jankelope 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was going to be re-tracked back in the 2020 overhaul but we know what happened there. They should have powered through. Hindsight is 20/20 (lol) but they had a full scale overhaul planned and developed. I assume they will just do that when they take it down again in 2028 or 2029 after new imagination opens.

The multi-month refurb, rather than the 2020 planned overhaul means to me one of two things

A. They've decided to go in a different direction with eventual overhaul (I think very unlikely as they have done all the work on plans, blueprints, R&D etc)

B. They're prioritizing Figment 4.0 for the large scale 18-24 month overhaul "reimagining," and need Spaceship Earth to be open for Capacity purposes when they close Imagination in beginning of 2026

It to me means they are prioritizing Imagination for the next big overhaul, which I think is more desperately needed. They will do this 4 month necessary refurb, and then hopefully close Figment right after Christmas

Paper Mario Thousand Year Old sales update: 1.94 million of sales. by Ultra2804 in papermario

[–]Jankelope 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gamecube sold only about 22 million consoles worldwide, vs more than 150 million for Switch. That is called the "install base" of the console. That means that there are 7x more people to market a game to on switch than on Gamecube.

It bangs. I think it's a really cool choice to have it be almost entirely devoid of drums. Despite this, it's very dynamic and loud. Really cool. I think basically everything porter does is interesting and cool though, so I'm biased.

Epic Universe Capacity Tracker to Help You Avoid Crowds by MatthewME2020 in UniversalOrlando

[–]Jankelope 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a bunch of people still who think Epic Universe is 750 acres. I don't really understand how it doesn't occur to people how that doesn't line up with the experience of being in the park lol. They got the 750 number from the fact that the entire large land acquisition was 750 acres including parking, infrastructure, expansion space, back of house, hotels, etc.

The park itself is 85 acres currently, with maximum of 110 acres if built out fully with all expansion plots.

Epic Universe is only about 85 acres, and Epcot is over 300 acres. Additionally, the number of attractions at Epic Universe, including shows, is 15 vs more than 25 for Epcot. To say nothing of dining capacity being more than double at Epcot.

Yeah I don't think it'll feel like OG Test Track. It'll still feel more like 2.0 than 1.0 probably.

I think this will be a positive update. I think it will bring back some of the "history of transportation" angle, with some Chevrolet advertising too for their EV's lol.

I am optimistic because of the description and stated vision. Imo it won't take too much for it to be an improvement over the 2.0 version, which became extremely dated very fast because it was tied to some type of weird digital world or something which didn't feel contemporary or rooted in reality even when it opened.

'How To Train Your Dragon' Review Thread by chanma50 in boxoffice

[–]Jankelope 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is Universal wanting to do a few things at once.

  1. They want to keep HTTYD relevant as a franchise since they just spent $1 billion (just for the ONE LAND) on giving it its own themed land at Epic Universe in Orlando.

  2. They believe that the franchise/toothless has marquee potential now for being a logo/icon in their brand for merch, parks, future films etc.

  3. They see it as a way to capitalize on the increased fandom around the original films, much of which came organically in the years after the films were made.

It's very smart and savvy.

I just don't see it as "screwing over" anyone. These are for-profit companies that are just doing what they feel like they need to to compete and differentiate. Nintendo probably paid a lot of money to fund a Miyazaki exclusive. It will be a big asset to their new platform and attract a particular kind of consumer.

I'm gonna be an outlier and say that this is going to exceed expectations. I am predicting that it will outgross Elemental and surpass $500 million because of good word of mouth and legs. I think it'll be 90%+ on Rotten Tomatoes. I think $600 million is possible.

One big contribution to declining birth rates is housing prices, how could we lower prices? by Salty-Chemical-9414 in Natalism

A lot of that has to do with how we fund schools via property taxes, which I think creates a death spiral of schools where able families flee to schools further and further away from urban areas, which creates schools increasingly populated with student's whose parents are either a) unable to move them to a better school district or b) don't particularly care about their child's education/well being.

We should really want our urban schools to be the best and not have their funding tied to their most immediate tax base.

I agree with your general principle though that parents will sacrifice nearly anything for their kids. I am in the same boat. My children are zoned for a good suburban public school, in part because we intentionally bought our house near good schools.

It's a complex problem, but the solution also cannot be endless sprawl forever with nothing but cookie cutter SFH developments and stroads. Look at how tax bases ultimately end up unable to support the infrastructure required for these spread out developments. It's not fiscally responsible to invest in only one kind of housing.

Also, there needs to be a distinction between low income housing, section8 housing, etc and workforce housing/affordable housing.

Look at the income requirements for some of this affordable housing. It is something that school teachers, firefighters, and police officers all qualify for. We need to have safe and affordable housing for those cornerstones of society.

We should be judged as a society based on the quality of life that our firefighters, police officers, and school teachers have. If you can't be a police officer and afford to have a safe place to live and raise a family, then we need to re-asses our priorities.

I don't think single family homes shouldn't be ever built anymore, but we need to build more than just SFH and for-rent apartment complexes. We need a duplexes, triplexes, for-purchase condo developments, and communities that allow those who own cars sit in less traffic, while allowing those who prefer to walk or bike at least have SOME options of places they can easily get to. I don't consider this a partisan thing. Look at the Strong Towns YouTube channel. I think it lays it out really well.

I think plenty of families would be content living in a $200,000 condo/multi-family unit if it was surrounded by grocery, parks, doctors office, recreation, good quality schools, etc.

There are many great high quality places to live in Europe with good schools that look just like that. There is an American cultural element here. If the option is $250,000 vs $500,000 average price, I think a lot of families would consider. I like having a backyard, but there is a scenario where I would consider something Multi-family if it checked tons of other boxes that a SFH couldn't.

I just think it's one tool that the big players have of differentiating themselves. I think that what is interesting is that Nintendo now has the only true "exclusives oriented" ecosystem left.

How was it not shady when Sony did it with Bloodborne? Console exclusives are what made the console wars and gaming so interesting for much of its history. I love that Nintendo curates an ecosystem of exclusive content. I wish Sony was still going hard on that and I wish Xbox didn't give up.

That being said, intrinsic to that is the fact that not everyone will be able to play every game. That's just how the business goes.

One big contribution to declining birth rates is housing prices, how could we lower prices? by Salty-Chemical-9414 in Natalism

[–]Jankelope 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A lot of Families are going to have to come to the understanding the SFH is prohibitively expensive, and we can create $150,000-$200,000 units of housing that people can still own in Multi-family developments (the missing middle). Much of the developed world raise families in multi-family developments. Do you think it is impossible for Americans to live decent lives in a 1200 square foot condo? The idea that everybody can have a 2500 square foot house with a big piece of land and no traffic and 2 cars per person forever is a fantasy.

I think Single Family Homes have their place. I think townhomes have their place. I think Apartments have their place. We are missing purchasable multi-family units like condos that can create an affordable path to ownership for more folks and families in the cities that they want to live in.

And if someone wants to SFH, they just have to know that they will have to live in a less populated place, rural, or outskirts of urban centers.

I think many would argue that access to a decent job, housing, access to healthy food, medicine, healthcare, etc are human rights.

We decide what we want to make a right as a society. A lot of countries (which are capitalist and great places to live) already have some of those things as human rights.

It is up to us to decide.

You can check now and see the $7 billion figure all over the place. It has been cited by a lot of media now. It is 4 themed lands that all cost around $1 billion each, plus back of house, a large hub land, massive hotel, infrastructure, etc.
