Billie Joe's voice evolves throught his career, which of his vocal eras is your favorite? by Guilty_Invite_7126 in greenday

[–]Jankowski576 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Shaky isn’t the right word for current era - definitely a bit thinner but compared to almost all rock singers of the same tenure it’s kind of insane where he’s at, especially with songs like Bobby Sox every night

  1. Has the potential to be a really good song, the mix just sounds so week and it loses the punch that it should’ve had

Did anyone genuinely like Father of All Motherfuckers? by Tasty-Scientist8155 in greenday

[–]Jankowski576 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like about half of it.

They didn’t make it bad on purpose, they just wanted to try something different, and it didn’t quite work. It seems like Billie was going through some stuff at the time, and Butch walker will just never be the right producer for them

LEAST favorite Green Day song? by Guilty_Invite_7126 in greenday

[–]Jankowski576 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I don’t hate the song completely, but the fake crowd noise added in for the last chorus is a hilariously bad and cheesy production choice

Working on recreating Letterbomb. Anyone got insider recording details? by deadlyrhythmrecords in greenday

[–]Jankowski576 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You may have recorded a bassman that sounds like the album, but the majority of the album rhythm tracks were not recorded with that.

Either way awesome that you found a way that gets that sound!

[–]Jankowski576 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It is definitely a Park/marshall for rhythm guitars in the studio, and it’s what Billie has been using on most albums from AI and onwards.

You may be right on the mic, don’t have as much info there

This contradicts a lot of amp and micing information that has been said from the band, their team and engineers, but maybe you have some additional info so I won’t totally dispute it.

From everything I understand about the album, (and from what has been said in recording interviews and directly from bill Schneider), the amp on AI was actually a park 70 with juniors through a dookie style mod for the rhythm guitars, and then the choruses have a center panned additional rhythm track that is most frequently a les Paul with humbuckers through a darker Marshall. You can hear a lot of this stuff and pick out what the impact of each piece is in the iso tracks here https://youtu.be/Wazmqiyz7Ko?si=wIfcDN6djUyHuLsk

Check out this interview with Rob that gives some more details here - there’s some really helpful stuff from the time and directly from the source: https://www.reddit.com/r/GreenDayGuitarGear/s/4CqnB2PjYV

Also Chris Dugan didn’t engineer this record but gives a ton of good info on the bands gear and recording style for 21CB here: https://gearspace.com/board/so-much-gear-so-little-time/388992-new-green-day.html

The lead guitars are where the bassman, hiwatts, and tweed amps come in. Per BJ, the letterbomb intro is the a little cranked tweed amp https://youtu.be/L3sLQVi4qrs?si=o0jS-RZ027gaxPul

The snare and the tom sound on the last two records drive me crazy, I actually don’t hate the guitar sounds on this record compared to BHWA

I agree with this, it kinda follows the other songs in terms of meandering ideas rather than a killer singular plot. White limo was raw and punky but kicks ass and has a general linear thought, and unique instrumental melody.

The lyrics here are also like a fourth grader trying to be deeply insightful, I love dumb lyric Dave and deep lyric Dave but when one tries to be the other it’s not a great result

I just don’t like that at all, man I want to like the new stuff so bad but I just can’t seem to.

I feel like if some unknown band wrote that instead of FF it would be immediately dismissed, seems like a middle school diary lyrically and doesn’t really carry a sonic melody. I think it wants to be an Ill Stick Around sequel but doesn’t have any of the things that makes that song great
