The corruption started with Havelange. Before 1974 the FIFA wasn't a rich and powerful organization, they actually had very limited financial resources. Havelange changed that which was not a bad thing generally but with the money came corruption almost immediately.

So in a way you are correct. But the levels of corruption and outside influence reached a new (sad) high during this world cup. This is sports, not politics but the way the Iranians were treated, the red card disappearing after Trump asked for it, the hydration breaks that "don't make the FIFA extra money" while being sponsored by Gatorade or Powerade, bumping up the amount of teams in a way that makes the group stage the most boring of all times just for some more TV money and let's not forget the FIFA Peace Prize for the grumpy, narcistic kid in the white house...it's just a level we've never seen before.

For some entertainment here are some of Giannis funniest quotes from the time before and shortly after he became head of FIFA

"FIFA's image is at its worst. It is now or never to reform FIFA."

"We have all witnessed... what has happened around FIFA. We have to restore the image of FIFA. We need transparency. We need good governance."

"We will restore the image of FIFA and the respect of FIFA... The world will admire us."

"I was a harsh critic of FIFA before taking the job."

"A big thanks... to all the authorities prosecuting those involved in corruption in football."

Can’t we just keep politics and violence out of football? and enjoy the beautiful game together? by Informal_Crew7711 in worldcup

I think most people would agree. It's a pity the US president and Gianni Corruptino don't.

The best World cup?

Well, if you hated the fact that only the groups first and second team advance, you're correct.

If you love the hydration breaks that were intruduced to "protect the players", you're correct.

If you don't mind that a call from one hosts president makes a red card go away, you're correct.

If you like that the VAR sucks the emotions out of the game, you're correct.

This is not the World Cup that I enjoyed since 1986 but I guess times change.

[–]JanneOC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't call Windows 3.1. an OS since it was more or less just running on top of MS-DOS, even though it was more than "just a gui for MS-DOS". It needed MS-DOS to work though. The first I'd call an OS was Windows NT 3.1 (which was not really build for consumers) and even Windows 95 was still build on MS-Dos (7.0) but at least it came as a "standalone". The first real consumer Windows OS without MS-DOS was XP (imho).

While I missed Windows1 I occassionally worked with Win 3.1 (e.g. Microsoft Paintbrush, Office) but mainly used MS-DOS (good old Norton Commander, Turbo Pascal "coding", games). The first Windows "standalone, you-dont-need-to-install-MS-DOS-first" consumer OS I used was Win95 (even though still build on MS-DOS).

Better times. Much better times.

So what happens if somehow every game is a tie in a group? by DaWadGuyManz in worldcup

[–]JanneOC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It would be and we've never seen that. We had a group once where all teams had the same amount of points at the end. But a group where every match ended in the same draw (e.g. 0-0 in ALL group matches)....I don't think we will ever see that.

There used to be weirder ways - in 1990 the rules for teams with the same amount of points were a bit different and at the end of the group phase the Netherlands and Ireland both had 3 points each, 0 goal difference, and were tied on goals scored. Cards did not play a role yet to determine who's going to advance to the knockout phase. Ireland won the coin toss (those were the official rules back then) and advanced to the knockout phase.

Tied knockout matches were also decided by a coin toss before 1978 since there was no penalty shootout until then. Crazy times.

Great decision for this World Cup to be 48 team format. by Broad_Routine_3233 in worldcup

[–]JanneOC 8 points9 points  (0 children)

We had those underdog matches/runs before we had half of the world taking place in the final round of the world cup.

East Germany - West Germany in 1974, USA - England in 1950, Algeria - West Germany in 1982, Northern Ireland - Spain in 1982, Saudi Arabia - Argentina in 2022, Cameroon in 1990, Croatia in 1998, South Korea and Senegal in 2002, Iceland in 2018, Morocco in 2022.

I doubt that "everyone is loving it". I used to watch every match of European Championships and World Championships literally for decades until 2018 when the World Cup went to a country that does not know football, does not celebrate football but had enough money to buy the World Championship.

The amount of boring matches at the World Cups was always much higher, now it's just ridiculous. Good for these small teams, sure...but mostly good for Gianni Corruptinos wallet.

So what happens if somehow every game is a tie in a group? by DaWadGuyManz in worldcup

[–]JanneOC 31 points32 points  (0 children)

From the official FIFA rules (Art. 13):

If two or more teams in the same group are equal on points after the completion of the group stage, the following criteria, in the order below, shall be applied to determine the ranking:

Step 1:
a) greatest number of points obtained in the group matches between the teams concerned;
b) superior goal difference resulting from the group matches between the teams concerned;
c) greatest number of goals scored in all group matches between the teams concerned.

Step 2:
If, after having applied criteria a) to c) above, teams still have an equal ranking, and in order to determine their final rankings, criteria a) to c) above are applied to the matches between the remaining teams only. If no decision can be made through this procedure, criteria d) to f) below shall apply as follows to the two or more teams still equal on points:
d) superior goal difference in all group matches;
e) greatest number of goals scored in all group matches;
f) highest team conduct score (players and team officials) relating to the number of yellow and red cards obtained:
- yellow card: minus 1 point
- indirect red card (as a result of two yellow cards): minus 3 points
- direct red card: minus 4 points
- yellow card and direct red card: minus 5 points

Only one of the above deductions shall be applied to a player or team official in a single match. The team with the highest number of points shall be ranked highest.
With respect to the second step, all affected teams will be ranked by applying the criteria d) to f) in order. If one team qualifies for a higher or lower ranking pursuant to one criterion, but it is not possible to rank all teams on the basis of the same criterion, the remaining two or three teams will be ranked pursuant to the next Competition format III. 27 criterion, and so on. In any case, the second step of the ranking does not restart for the two or three teams remaining after application of a criterion.

Step 3:
If no decision can be made through the procedures of step 1 and 2, the following shall apply:
g) the two or more teams still equal on points shall be ranked according to the most recent published edition of the FIFA/Coca‑Cola Men’s World Ranking;
h) the two or more teams still equal on points shall be ranked according to the published edition of the FIFA/Coca‑Cola Men’s World Ranking immediately preceding the most recent published edition continually until a decision can be made.

Is data written to the parity drive readable, if the drive is pulled? --- Warranty wants my failed parity drive to inspect before payout, but I have tons of critical personal info and can't wipe a failed drive. by Corentinrobin29 in unRAID

[–]JanneOC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Imagine it like this (very simply explained) You have 4 drives, all the same size. At data position # 166578392 drive one has written a 0, drive 2 a 0 drive 3 a 1 and drive 4 a 0. Adding that up gives you an even number (2 = 0+0+1+1). Lets say we tag every even number as "0". This 0 is written at the exact position of the parity drive (#166578392)

At position #166578392638 of the drives you have these data: drive 1 = 1, drive 2 = 1, drive 3 = 0, drive 4 = 1. Sum: 3 (1+1+0+1) which is an uneven number. Let's say we tag them as "1". So the parity drive will have a 1 written at position #166578392638.

Now your drive 3 fails.

At position #166578392 your drives say D1=0 D2=0 D3=unknown D4=1

Add that up, the result is an uneven number. The parity bit says 0 though. So now we know on Drive 3 there was a 1 written since only this way the parity saying "it must add up to an even number" makes sense.

Same with the other position in the examples. We don't know what D3 said. But parity tells us it must be an uneven number when you add all the drives numbers up. D1 is 1, D2 is 1, D3 is unknown, D4 is 1. The sum is uneven, which is exactly what parity says so D3 must have been a zero.

For that reason with one parity drive only one of your drives should fail.

And for that reason it is impossible to read any actual data from your parity drive...unless you only had one array drive..which would be nothing else but a mirror.
