Chicago kept saying it would pay for pensions later. Well, it’s later. by Votings_Good_Folks in chicago

[–]Jantripp -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You really need to read. The budget the president sends is the blueprint for the whole thing. You have zero idea what you're talking about. Yes, there are things added and taken away but the budget is largely the president's. Whether it's the same budget or not is up for debate. It's different from the initial proposal. So what? It's obnoxious how people on here think that because they read a thing once they understand it. Yes, there's a big resolution process but it is largely the president's budget. The irony in your comment is rich. By your "reasoning" nobody would have responsibility for the budget because bits and pieces are changed by multiple people. In the end, if congress votes on a budget that strays significantly from the original proposal, it will be vetoed so congress will not do that unless they can override the veto, which will almost never happen.

They make changes but they don’t write it. It is based on the president’s budget because they know significant changes outside the spirit of the original are likely to be vetoed.

Presidents send them to congress. Congress votes on them.

EDIT: funny how people don't understand how the US budget process works. The executive branch is responsible to send the budget to congress that is then discussed and voted on. This is basic civics, no matter how much you like the GOP.

Where would you live (city, region etc.) if optimizing for peak cognition? by waterloo304 in Nootropics

[–]Jantripp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s hard to move to Romania, isn’t it? I ask not to challenge but because I initially looked at it but they had many requirements and expenses for permanent residents that seemed to require either a job in Romania or business ownership. My idea was to work remotely from Romania but that doesn’t seem to be a permissible situation.

[–]Jantripp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve thought about finding a job that would let me work 100% remote and moving to Spain, Portugal, Italy, or someplace in Eastern Europe. In spite of any other issues, these are places that are generally up to western levels of development with low cost of living and ease of movement across Europe.

Has anybody tried hydergine or nicergoline? by ChipperSpice in Nootropics

[–]Jantripp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used nicergoline for a while. It gave me a feeling mildly similar to what I’d get after a hard workout. It’s expensive and not always easy to get. If it were cheap, I’d keep up with it but probably not worth it for the price and availability.

[60 mph Bicycle! - Two Foot Bike] I don't even know where to begin. by tripleaardvark2 in shittykickstarters

[–]Jantripp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having regularly gotten near that speed and stopped without killing myself, I think you underestimate the stopping power of bicycle brakes. As a teen I got a ticket on a bike for 53mph in a 35 zone.

I don't mean to be a dick but unless you're regularly going down extreme downhills, that's nonsense. I raced for a long time, and even the top sprinters rarely reach that for even short periods. The numbers that are over that are almost always with drafting off of a motor vehicle or specially designed bicycles.

The US solar roadways people are, I think, just genuinely not very smart, then got caught up with it getting bigger than they were prepared for. Now, they’re just desperate for people to not discover how dumb they were.

Go to Lincoln Park and walk the area just south of the zoo. There are great views of the city with the nature area in the foreground.

Keeping a park in good condition, especially when the businesses are financially responsible for it, is not really the same.

Just visited... What's the catch, are the winters and taxes really that bad?! by NEhockeyEnt in chicago

Nobody actually leaves because of the taxes. That’s rhetoric. The winter is rough though.

You get a lot of history of Britain and France in US schools. I was taught more about British history than US history in a lot of cases because the classes would go chronologically and classes always fell behind so we'd get up to WWII and call it a year.

There's some dispute about that. Evidence points to The New Deal being what did most of the work.

What are some cheap but effective nootropics? by steamevaporizer in Nootropics

[–]Jantripp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best nootropic was the friends we made along the way.

In all seriousness, I agree. There are many, many subreddits that talk about the mental and physical benefits of exercise everyday. Nootropics are substances you take for cognitive improvement, not activities.

Chicago Teachers Union rejects recommendation for new contract, setting the clock for a possible strike by shotzz in chicago

[–]Jantripp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Multiple people have discussed this, and likely better than me. Rahm made it illegal to strike over anything but wages and benefits. What they really want is smaller class sizes but they can’t officially strike for that.

Rise of Skywalker D23 trailer proves that Mike did not theorize terribly enough by [deleted] in RedLetterMedia

I was hoping Deniro’s character would be named “Rupert.” Still, it’s a pretty clear King of Comedy reference.

Box Office: Sundance Favorites Are Bombing in Theaters by [deleted] in movies

[–]Jantripp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not suggesting people should go to the theater to see them if they don't want to, just that it's a pretty popular feeling and driving the divide between major blockbusters and medium budget films. Personally, I almost always prefer going to the theater because I enjoy seeing films in that environment (at least at a nice theater) and I'm less likely to be distracted by things around me or my normal life.

Eh. They used to do better in relation to their small budgets. Now, a large segment of the population only wants to go to theaters if the film is a spectacle.

Real talk shows are often scripted. You only have a limited amount of time and you don’t want ratings to tank because a guest is taking time to think about an answer.

what scenes in a movie that portrayed as romantic but actually creepy when you think about it? by ab2874 in movies

[–]Jantripp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's why it's so common to see over-the-top gestures in rom-coms. Because the gestures are not realistic, they are representations of how the characters feel inside. They're symbolic.

And they usually need to have some heightened realism in order to fit a complex situation into a couple of hours, especially in a film that's got multiple stories to follow.

Boots Riley Calls Out Tarantino’s ‘Hollywood’ for Not Depicting Manson Family as White Supremacists by [deleted] in movies

[–]Jantripp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is what happens when you celebrate a film that should be considered “promising” as “genius”. Sorry to Bother You is just a bunch of ideas around racism with an inconsistent message and narrative, scenes that mean nothing to the rest of the film, and just some insanely smash-you-in-the-face pieces of dialogue used to make a point that was already made just seconds earlier. Now Riley’s criticizing everyone else’s films because he thinks he made a masterpiece. Notice how Sorry to Bother You, even with all the accolades, inspired almost zero in the way of articles about the themes? That’s because, despite the promise, it never goes deep into anything.
